You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,, r! ~3 M, M% x& k3 ]9 f

1 w% I% X+ C0 p  {' bI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
) m) Q/ G  J  Y, a0 K! r" y( m. K7 s4 g, U+ O$ _8 x+ x
His name was Kyle.
4 B3 T, ^/ V, M
7 Z- y0 q6 V0 S# P$ L; KIt looked like he was carrying all of his- y! f9 n& B& s: x& {3 r
Books.
+ Q/ O) s4 M' g7 G/ I* U9 g& r, }3 I
# d  B( v( S/ r+ X' ]( E8 a2 J1 ?I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
  M- j! I  s) O/ c$ E4 y
9 H9 O. A0 k# HHe must really be a nerd."& X+ V2 J, z) @6 y$ j: d

, b% ?$ g3 o$ W+ b; _I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
; B( U, g5 x9 \6 p" A& m* b& c: l3 l" A% |) l; S/ o* n; ?" c% K$ `
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.) k4 F0 s! J" g4 c8 F

9 v3 W" j9 v2 h$ J7 @0 m. X- ^  LThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.# |+ B. R3 r" k& |

% b/ h' e$ l. y' T' _1 VHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.2 [" T- w0 z6 i6 ~# v

: b# A) v& O& `, b" l" p, P8 U9 JHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
% a2 A5 K3 K( o/ S" v# b
% e8 ^2 j( k  I  `3 ]My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.0 b$ t6 I# ~8 c( \0 l. t
' `6 D& F* z9 T3 ?: }
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.$ R7 \, ~* R9 ?1 H# Q, P& m

2 \2 S6 l/ E& _7 F8 WThey really should get lives.
+ J- U' e" o+ \9 R" y
2 S8 b7 }6 ~1 B8 C" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"/ Z/ b  |, W- [2 c( g" H
" {+ c7 l8 {- h  D
There was a big smile on his face.. z: k" ]2 o+ v  u4 v3 |

$ M$ R* T9 A$ O7 ]It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.4 u% I  ~% d2 t$ g( |
3 i' G+ ^; c( t  j4 m5 m8 E
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
+ Y% a  ]7 j! {2 k  u! g
2 W( p9 R. W, W& \; [1 a- i1 @" |As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.- v, z0 w& r; L& m8 ~
& c4 s5 M2 }; k6 J  T
He said he had gone to private school before now.
! ]$ a; j8 E7 ?
$ k% }9 f2 g, b5 G7 cI would have never hung out with a private school kid before." ^6 }* M9 S) z* y0 J1 n
) g/ s1 A* W) X) l
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
& o0 d7 o7 [0 ]6 R5 O( b/ x& i* q% o9 C5 v3 z% Z
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.! Z$ D# m/ P! k- _7 b2 N' U

$ K7 O, w0 I* L3 |& YI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
3 w- U  [) H! A% C
+ X6 w$ s4 `$ P9 G- _- KHe said yes.
0 A) g! C' V( L& i. N% G
$ z' t4 B7 Y: I) ]% i2 S3 WWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
  {6 I: A  a1 w2 F+ c2 M+ A7 I; b- U: }; P. w0 [& O: P4 x
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
# c& @2 ?4 `# e  G. {* O! b2 N- O2 w( h, [' ?
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
+ {5 r, o& N  W1 D4 M* z# A+ k( Y: Q" `% o5 M) `0 v8 Q! H6 m
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
2 x) c2 X" G4 S/ T; d4 @
5 N# [  s6 A7 BOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.4 G7 \: \6 F2 A
+ I; Q3 E! h3 h/ L
When we were seniors, we began to think2 ~& x3 {% e) C7 d4 r9 q5 C
About college.7 T9 _; s% q8 S! B2 `" I' D0 x

) O4 L7 j0 a$ U& v/ }Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
" M1 w$ F( C1 Q; g# HWas going to Duke.+ M" y; h- Z1 ~5 T. M2 M0 _
8 H) K! o5 \) }; Z6 Z8 ?) y# H
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
) `) j# i* b7 j2 d8 Y
  _, K* ]# @# D) WHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.7 o/ {0 L* ^- D5 Z" U  _: R# Q1 F9 P
: S. w3 I6 g* i- y- L
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.9 b3 y7 d: ]( [9 R# O, A% y. `

1 ~. g6 S1 f! O0 e* N$ SI teased him all the time about being a nerd.3 l0 k3 \- z' a

4 m0 c  `0 A4 X; n+ RHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
3 V/ A' R; l4 w9 N( M/ R2 o! Z& Q7 O+ k- S# F7 g
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak5 r' E/ K. I+ L2 p2 N

% q( z0 B* @' j9 h1 O  T8 _; s0 SGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
# t' s& @$ d  H. S' Y
7 D$ V3 d  u- m- d' l! j6 e* n7 HHe looked great.
+ A* c' e; m2 J2 j8 z( v# T% E) t# _
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
3 k5 }( ]  p! }+ A4 z# O  x3 g. o5 m3 W' X5 T
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
* Y# {! N5 a+ ^/ I" B( n/ r6 X4 }% k: u9 v. @
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
' o; I1 H" y9 Q, R* b
4 o3 f( ]3 c1 V( Z$ t6 n4 `3 W7 [Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
' P/ R: C2 k0 \, Z! H" U) q1 q# G5 r  R9 k1 s' d( s
Today was one of those days." Q6 O: j& g5 {+ J( x1 `
& C8 k. L' q, L$ H
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.0 K  o$ }9 e' @" V

. ?2 j; D# Q2 t$ F( Z' mSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"( }8 i; i( v9 j5 L
; A: I  u* H5 a7 n
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
/ q$ u0 T6 t+ L& Y' R3 j, l5 i. F7 m% Z4 s- B
"Thanks," he said.
; j! Y$ o* V" _8 g2 ^+ C7 @
! v" W0 T4 }8 X% @" sAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. a9 Q7 ^* k, R& z( }

+ J9 A; x, ^) Q: x7 S- o9 c" o"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
& _" d* {, q8 l$ M4 B" ]
$ |, v" `2 h" ^+ \9 A& u& z2 ~Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
/ r# c  O# v4 A/ P: Y! U9 N
; |: m: D" K. {; nI am here to tell all of you that being a1 k* x4 t. j9 `% C- ?
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.8 ]7 s, }3 b' \$ ?" |2 f9 Z

& ~  L1 c! T* e) w! A$ C# II am going to tell you a story."3 _, }* N. X& }  Y) K
, {5 X+ T  r# K' N
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
, ]% A" I) U# d: I- ~3 N; M# x" b* L7 [" p/ n2 ]
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
* e6 D& D7 ~7 J. o
9 A! ], Z7 D4 p/ N  {He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
2 ^, @6 @. s! [0 v$ [* Z: r. `( [. ?# l* N) M- k- T
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
2 b  t+ k) @/ f) |2 T- v) q& K* r& F& x5 O
"Thankfully, I was saved." T' |$ n) r- \, }2 L
" ~/ b- o$ z+ Z/ ~- X
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
0 b- }# B3 r# e7 v- R8 L$ p: o" {  @/ K4 w. e1 w% W9 i
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
/ p) J' A! S0 T8 N! I4 w" T# y, c0 Y& m
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
3 g% r6 N' Y$ D+ k; o1 d0 y2 v5 h* ~3 ~- ]( C$ u
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.- I8 T( `5 @9 G# N6 Q
9 y4 @# I5 {: R. x/ I4 G
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
3 l, _# K' _0 B
' ~/ M3 g6 @$ b7 _  rWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.  _2 [* G" J2 a
' k- W; }2 y# {( V* P+ H9 L
For better or for worse.! _0 _4 R3 \8 u* X  U0 z: i

0 z) l7 Q" l& O! y0 G$ hGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
5 x4 U/ Z* ?1 ]; P2 J2 a
9 M6 V; R7 m3 |/ o) F/ dLook for God in others.4 J7 i6 [. O7 J' S! Y) w& e

$ O' m" Z4 z( X4 n2 U; sYou now have two choices, you can:
* r! y4 G2 ~) F, I( _0 ]9 D! L8 h' c7 T( Y1 n: x- D
1) Pass this on to your friends or
: J# _2 a$ j9 W/ V9 T3 ~
( M) r, [- [! O6 K7 O" z2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
5 G' ^8 A7 h- ]0 K) N2 ?) c7 j+ [
7 n' I# ^0 r" F. AAs you can see, I took choice number 1.. v6 U6 v* ]  r/ _
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
/ M# A0 ?" e8 `# N- K  q( R& h! E8 B% F% @- ?# ~
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
( n& R7 I0 ?/ i  u! e! `) T1 k0 ]+ {% D% N3 w: L. \
Tomorrow is mystery.& |! X7 n. v2 L$ n5 J7 W6 _- Z6 o
6 e/ z, ?7 D% w7 t' x/ j
Today is a gift.! V. C" ]- g& Q7 a1 W4 U
