You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,& Y+ m0 [3 S5 Z

: m1 T7 n6 D5 t7 N) q' D7 P0 i  o) K7 tI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
! L3 x# z! h* ~! x
# d, u* d& ?/ _9 [% [( t3 vHis name was Kyle.0 \7 \. C: P+ y8 |; J

+ H$ B# s% \" E$ W* b/ {It looked like he was carrying all of his. K  B5 \2 v5 Y6 }% m
Books.; w7 G4 M3 F9 m2 v, F, X

" B$ ~6 V; x. p* N# Q8 dI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
2 D( c4 _. ^: l4 I1 a9 k$ R0 ~/ h3 u1 q0 z
He must really be a nerd."
  X  ~' Q  v& ~: v! O* ]6 M" w
- F- K# l9 H$ q4 q) ?% k0 B+ zI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
5 U! W. K1 a  ^/ c
* s& x' S* O2 {4 w  F$ S3 F; gAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.$ N+ \8 U# u3 I5 U: J# }, {8 @

2 e, S( B8 k* A* F# L( z! K8 c) YThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
6 ?+ D5 r. ~7 i# D* w* S4 b
# i8 U+ s% T' S' p( \: E& C: vHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.- G& \+ M# a+ i! O. c: Y$ q
- x7 Q; T$ e6 u+ E0 b8 |0 D% E
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
; X9 N' y7 K/ s& ?/ w
% ?, k( f7 u5 l* f  ^6 }1 T; P) TMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.* }) Y  u5 [! m9 l$ r) i

' j3 w. v9 Y% N9 F# S4 ?As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
2 m8 r6 |5 W4 P8 ]2 d7 d; L. b7 {* i$ E/ X; ]& H# {2 t4 A' T% E
They really should get lives.- C$ m! w9 ?" N0 d

0 L$ j1 a3 v# R% q( p) a& Y1 l3 a" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
& V+ x4 R. `! @. s, V
" }# L- |3 @6 ?' CThere was a big smile on his face.! ~8 U0 [3 C( r: |! l% L
4 {2 J% c& r& `5 V
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.. I% |2 J5 s/ D4 C
% u) X5 y. k- p. ~1 u: e5 }
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.9 q( Z8 L; D. L% |# z5 ?
/ x0 ^1 F  p6 C! W$ b
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before./ M+ ~8 c) @3 w$ ~2 p; v

& ^: P  u$ V8 f. }8 ?% Z  j* _% v# kHe said he had gone to private school before now.
) A1 v( t4 Z0 E! d! q9 H; _; B7 z: b+ z9 h- D" O
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
3 T. i7 X" l9 {! P" W
( z3 G6 r' y0 C3 t" l- d& \We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.) q& }$ Y4 }5 T* c: r: J( ^  _

0 O0 Z; f) q6 L+ h3 RHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
- ]" F$ E' y1 c8 K9 n/ c5 t8 u4 t8 N/ S; }1 |6 l1 v
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.1 X" R" W$ `, U: o' [
1 y* ?: b- I, Z5 i
He said yes.# [4 L# \2 H' `/ [+ L# M) u3 o3 D' u
: D, E( f* @9 \$ R6 Q
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
, E; F% s: K0 B; E, h6 {  A7 N+ b9 j- @
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again./ a3 A$ u' F% T6 v9 u

. }1 z! v/ r7 ?( I. H- gI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
9 ]! a) [8 `! A2 R% w; }
6 f+ `/ f1 M( a; M( P" He just laughed and handed me half the books.! e5 r, {! r- n' U  U/ P

8 P9 I2 W. G: f# T# C  d4 kOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
7 s% D4 P# [  o* p* Q7 k' d& b  N+ [1 H# M3 |; O
When we were seniors, we began to think
( p: j1 }7 Q" m, aAbout college.8 |+ e, K  l7 `6 X% o6 Q
8 S: J7 F" o" v7 a0 s
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
. Z7 ?2 g( D- {( V; xWas going to Duke.. W4 l' _+ ^. ^& l0 M! R8 u0 o
3 B9 f- J2 H! C+ Z8 O+ R
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.9 J2 Z: j1 q6 \

, [' x8 Q, K: G, uHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
; x9 W4 i# v( x3 D1 R2 j* L
" ]4 {; }$ L: ^+ L$ J) NKyle was valedictorian of our class.
1 k% h1 A( E% }% X$ I: g
5 f; W# Q/ @3 \I teased him all the time about being a nerd.8 d' N9 b# x+ n/ ^% T

8 g$ ?/ D1 |9 X1 |5 FHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
, t% o9 f7 q9 h: e
, ]* h. @: I9 t/ @7 UI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
: y! o/ C& I$ |* K
: v" T) O5 n$ s9 G# m; i0 zGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
5 q' U  z! t9 Q" A9 c: C
/ ^$ V% X) e( J* V6 y! oHe looked great.& T- ~0 `. |' k" z% q" c
  A& M" O! R! `( r( |& |- u1 s
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
  R6 T9 w! h* T% @
$ G3 V4 g) y6 y4 m( R( wHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
: @5 l7 ~+ j$ l- T9 O. e/ U7 i0 h& M) w3 P1 |3 `2 l' S
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
& k- x5 b' D4 |/ n- r& l* h7 F
9 o) T1 C" G, |& Z" ?7 pBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
/ i& ^$ D& `/ s  B  q) s) V8 K. l% ]0 D, z. Y
Today was one of those days.! w5 s2 A2 m: r1 w# j, X* m

" i9 E% ?& \1 F6 m& @I could see that he was nervous about his speech.9 j, d' x: L& U( E5 o' g
. `2 ^5 ^7 S, d1 Q/ p
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
/ ]7 M8 Q' J! r* ?- r1 P5 M; k) f5 y
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.$ X9 N+ @4 `) z% U6 o2 o  R

5 E2 ~9 ?' A  R, R. K6 ]6 q: d) E"Thanks," he said.
" ~" f% _1 q* A( n3 N, _! y$ }) |
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began; L3 h( ]2 \. m  X1 p& K9 n& ~

3 B' t6 U6 Y/ S% ]"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.' C7 Z  Q3 s* U, q4 Y" H
' }. R1 n8 _( m2 T
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
, D$ y. L; X, N" C4 E7 H, l# N& p7 v+ s0 Z
I am here to tell all of you that being a9 _7 n% \! W' T
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
; v  F3 D) E4 o3 O  t  a: [, P1 ^% l1 w$ H
I am going to tell you a story."
" Q& n1 h: C& o% p, g3 f4 Z; Q/ d. E) w/ A1 X2 x
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
3 R' h- M7 e! B! z6 D2 e
1 [3 x$ o/ g6 OHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.1 ~( W, @; K. N3 I6 ~& Z9 ]

0 r/ g* L9 M6 T  M( O4 RHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.7 n& f/ l' _' [7 u  H" H/ j

8 e4 T* l$ b/ i5 N5 @0 s% v. I/ }: @He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.7 k1 `4 k: L. C1 O
* I' ]. u: i( @/ H& T4 }, G0 u
"Thankfully, I was saved.
8 W9 S" k! e2 J( j; l
* w6 c2 Z( ]; G/ ?9 `My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
+ _$ ?) X* a  Q2 v/ u0 J4 }6 i1 N4 _9 v1 N, v
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.5 j# s3 {6 s0 r% s/ p
' x6 E4 T0 g, q
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
. {3 r/ K) k( c$ G+ |$ `3 q# j/ Z4 w3 l0 {  |% Q
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.0 h) D1 @1 ^% F+ a" M

% `; q  y6 j' SNever underestimate the power of your actions.- O! y3 ^+ c1 m- ]) |0 [$ s9 s9 Z
/ O2 }9 x0 i8 W/ {3 Q
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
2 H' n& B' `+ ^. \) I( K
  y) `) F$ j% q' }& T7 xFor better or for worse.# c8 s. X0 [, h3 i  c8 {
6 {# \" D* P" h# @# p
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
' d- j6 H% \3 S3 t
, e$ c6 q2 s. M2 w# tLook for God in others.2 p3 B/ c5 f, Z7 U
1 v0 u; s9 ^  \. q
You now have two choices, you can:' E+ c+ o$ L- X6 l
9 f8 `2 M8 d) {7 `  M
1) Pass this on to your friends or% Z  p7 H2 ~( u3 k: x( b* M
" z1 h1 h: x0 A/ |9 _4 q# G
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.2 e; X& K! s3 k. M" B; u
, ?7 N; n  y. {: [+ d/ F
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
2 Y' ?2 H3 g+ W" j' T3 v"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.", V' X" ^& k# H5 j7 b

# w7 X1 e/ c1 Q" C% XThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.% N/ R2 q. e1 ^/ [' R. i$ ]( L4 l+ K
3 t% `* y: ]" v( Z
Tomorrow is mystery.3 m+ f9 E* }/ v5 i9 _2 T0 `
# K1 X9 Z/ Q6 E1 S8 ?
Today is a gift.. q8 i' A7 ^* p$ p/ `7 H+ \
