You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
: v4 F* R( g$ a3 E
, F& I/ i" V% M, J. uI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
. q" Z6 N) c/ J7 K$ i/ ~
( u3 S+ w$ n1 x" ~6 dHis name was Kyle.0 H% W( k$ B: _+ v! _4 i
4 V" q% ^; i+ w7 [1 b
It looked like he was carrying all of his
! t& h1 Z5 K" aBooks.6 B/ s/ n+ n4 j3 m3 x8 l

. H1 Q6 M, l# I2 _/ q4 _I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?1 T0 S& c$ E( b; A$ \
, W. a& j  o7 @0 W# `0 B
He must really be a nerd."9 G1 T/ R  `* x$ q
. R2 m4 K( d/ D0 Q8 W
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.$ _$ S2 h' p! b4 g0 x) P4 Y

) M; q0 x/ k  q. Y* n: U. gAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
# ^; O2 }- U0 L" R- A: D1 l" Q, x; i, ~6 x* I+ i9 x3 k+ S, {  B
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
- p2 Q: `4 j" N( H+ P! v
6 a9 C, l4 M2 F) k1 A- ~His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.9 }0 m4 k+ k7 q6 Q

4 n2 K+ M$ h( o3 j/ e/ w8 ^) aHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
3 M* ?. s' P4 f3 [6 r, H0 B/ ?4 D5 M) G
: C3 y, K, z% F; V& U7 f, lMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye./ i) I' @- U3 W. ~) {3 P

" d9 u/ U' E* OAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.4 |! D0 E7 L$ I, W+ ?
2 v  i# s- {/ l3 h& N
They really should get lives.: u; a, P. n! A
# D& @; z- B' c4 {8 u
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!". Q% W6 c% S$ p4 j! X" J# t
0 g; c& r/ F' r
There was a big smile on his face., I2 D3 ]- I+ I3 }- ^  o
+ G6 c  w, S/ b+ ]; g: q
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.8 p' Z* o3 x( A7 e7 T1 ~+ U, t

7 ?2 Y$ f1 V) h- pI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
% ?( u8 a5 I) a7 w" \% c8 y5 C/ y1 w4 Y/ ^* P, \. M/ U
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.7 D8 N9 ~3 U' J  w

- x5 w% s) p+ C5 X' rHe said he had gone to private school before now.
6 J- X% B! W: I6 [% V( a' F  j
; U1 d4 e. [. X0 b' L: _4 NI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
( j) g6 ^" _7 Y$ s* f! z) {: @0 I. x
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
; R& B. C: a, v  a9 E0 w1 w
. E' O; _* d& t1 a' JHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.& u: s0 d0 ~) k6 A6 c' n& `3 C, a! k

5 |4 o+ ?9 o* {- {( @; V* N" pI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
" n% |* ^5 s) J, \! E' {6 Z* S% ~0 f* K; H9 G* D( u! o9 y2 R
He said yes.
5 k& E" X- N' x; B
" A; i3 X6 D7 u9 e0 m9 aWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
8 l% g$ |( ?# s8 r; e2 s( O& W5 I5 A
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
. Q  b2 S& Y9 i; E7 a! n" U& q
% v# k7 _6 L7 F1 P" F9 \9 |: A1 bI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!0 b8 Y0 B) h$ ^1 C
* A6 t+ ?; T' f. ~
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.1 j  |# m; u' X& i
9 s# I" J; |: ^  m, N( L5 j
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
1 q5 j5 g7 I. Z; c% ]. L7 a0 b  r3 E- l/ y. x' F% Y( w" m
When we were seniors, we began to think
! _- q2 V+ S1 AAbout college.
3 Q' F) M/ {: h
! V/ e' ~  w( y) j- ]" OKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
# X% Q7 o2 o# u7 t5 aWas going to Duke.3 p5 x, J/ ~) _: L" H

5 }8 w5 I) O$ q) s* cI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.1 a; H+ t9 v  L% A
6 |0 r- E8 U1 y9 `
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
' n7 v, ]. l0 n
! V. o! f2 o6 k! q5 h+ A4 E5 rKyle was valedictorian of our class.
, Z0 a0 V/ I& K3 ]4 `: d8 j3 i" E/ U# g( b9 b
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.) Z& @+ P& Q( L3 C& A0 N7 U/ d
( r/ N2 D2 n" a1 ?5 w- g, ?! @8 Q
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
& ]# Z9 A* R, x0 Q* T8 w% A
6 x# r) h% d4 w$ OI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak0 A& z$ P9 [7 [

" W- H: w0 B9 x" G3 xGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
4 ~: z' B) B: C" g* O& r) [/ _; M6 ?* N$ |8 [$ D
He looked great.5 k* M  X( P+ l$ p' m. z
# Z! N# U' N: y  T/ C- }$ [* k
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.9 g" e7 d9 w" I- D" z8 B7 W: {6 P

+ R0 Q+ I  {* D' |; C) dHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
6 O) e- W! I/ F: ~9 b' e/ r0 t/ E2 A  R" N0 {3 H
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.7 r3 v# s. J& l! F

/ a9 O+ C/ w  s" i; ^) Z2 Y7 ?Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
$ t# I9 G5 a- _
( |5 {7 p7 _3 s: i" ~Today was one of those days.
( ^( G$ b2 E6 e& o/ C5 b3 N# v4 Y  D" C$ d
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
% k; O7 J5 x0 B! q' }/ V9 y8 N2 F' L9 _. b, e3 f! G
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
" `' p, {' m. {' E" ?6 [3 @. l2 ^* M7 s  p) c' V
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.5 b6 \/ i; g, G" t, X9 i

+ Q8 m9 R9 |$ K"Thanks," he said.3 m" p2 Q0 l' h0 Y

( @. z2 p' i8 A9 D# {4 YAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
: ^4 }( E4 h- [  D3 o. W9 S
8 ^# f+ {( a9 i4 H0 a5 a! D1 l"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
# R9 Q" c. }: Y% x# d
/ ?7 T2 ]& i  M# rYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...  p1 c' L2 @/ p
% v0 r! S8 N( ?- r: t7 X2 b
I am here to tell all of you that being a3 s! l6 ^3 G* F# A$ A! c5 T+ x* H
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.  v$ n3 H5 b0 t5 W3 a- N4 j+ F
8 `- F( {% _3 X: v
I am going to tell you a story."
' Q/ q8 b  |; b' R+ A, n. C2 S/ z; \& O6 u2 V  }
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.. M4 S, f+ o" X4 C. d  k$ }5 S! ^

( Y4 g1 Z" ?* H1 A8 J# KHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.% P& L! V, C0 H' N0 D+ L/ w
) r* M) ?' z7 F; p$ J2 W5 u
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.+ w* h5 q4 L: X- d
$ s$ R! s: s) k3 D
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.+ J% V, m$ k( A/ M0 z/ P2 u
5 O) M1 F' n( u$ x
"Thankfully, I was saved.
. }; e/ P! g4 G: H- X- ^
0 r, d! _/ ^& h; `% gMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."9 P+ [. Q7 v1 G0 F- m3 G

) N! [9 m% W# P% X6 `5 T+ oI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
( V2 C/ k# J# |* g  f% K- p" Q! x6 p$ o* l, Y+ N
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.# X* _  ]& A! P* x# g* F- B: C

6 l& P+ B9 }2 y/ e& f7 BNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
( o+ |) I0 X$ N% ?
( S2 K( p4 _, T6 k7 E, ENever underestimate the power of your actions., I7 D4 J& N6 g/ a& ^9 D' m
2 L9 R# `$ {& E8 z
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.: i) K2 T) @7 q3 z
8 x  z( F, W8 u: p5 g9 ^* W
For better or for worse.1 G5 h7 E4 [) A- o

1 ~8 |" T% s" I6 RGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
% Q% Z7 r& [' n& T2 q% [5 ?4 g0 R- g* _, h  I5 x0 ~, F7 j. G
Look for God in others.2 j9 W* q- r4 l6 I

) B2 m  X; h$ i8 QYou now have two choices, you can:
; D4 V4 H0 b' b. J$ B3 }
) P! i: ]' }6 q* l9 c% [  ~- T1) Pass this on to your friends or5 M% Y9 N9 _- \5 e

! x! ]& y) }5 J& f( Q2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.! W7 u" m$ [, Q0 J/ o6 u

9 F! P1 w7 D! s, RAs you can see, I took choice number 1.! v7 v" A+ `( R3 A
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."0 n# p. }# H( }

  p; I& B3 Y# T% a; _/ wThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
; i- N! J6 U/ Z/ P% D  c3 B2 m/ e/ ]% J# q8 [7 e% P
Tomorrow is mystery., K) k- M% T2 |
