You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,7 ?# h+ N4 M" T/ o

; r1 Y2 a2 @0 pI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.3 _4 r; d- a# M* C, e

! f" P0 g: ?& q; W9 BHis name was Kyle.2 G$ ^9 ?9 h! V/ {: W
, e- }7 O+ ^+ T/ c4 v( {
It looked like he was carrying all of his1 \- y: v! F! _( g9 n; j* C
Books.
7 `; ?. [/ M+ K9 w0 U; J, i% v1 K0 c
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
0 W+ `  A) o, L  {1 x" m8 t: o( e9 b5 R" X+ z
He must really be a nerd."
  C, d; ^) h( |6 X
& V+ r6 F' G$ x* \6 p* \: X7 r" \. l, eI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
/ r$ S# K$ v$ g! q& T- ^. I3 D  b. @8 W+ }+ Q
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
( M1 k: S( E" K$ @: B8 N
: u* V4 `8 H0 ?: h" h  g0 hThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
+ W( M/ V& }" x) V6 {4 j
4 R$ q! g. L4 {6 v. R& g% P! ?His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
$ }8 R+ l" i  w: y$ N8 M# T$ W9 j6 a% B( [
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes1 `  O4 \3 T( y3 {
# f& @% J8 C% i: |6 A/ |8 ?* f8 ?) Y
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
  Q5 d) @4 {5 Y  q' p) B
* D3 m# J; U' R- I" n# S6 XAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
3 {- r  S5 }4 W
  w$ R  d) E7 s6 W0 p# ]They really should get lives.
: y2 I# W1 r4 e, y
. Z0 V. j+ f" L( I# I" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"* o( i5 n6 a* e! M

' R: S  Y) ^; {+ [There was a big smile on his face.0 Q+ R# s# {, B7 H, z
2 u8 i9 J7 O/ P$ K% W
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.7 P) j& B7 w8 t3 F* x

! g; D' v% w7 S4 I  cI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.( t" }9 \  L7 U6 A  x
2 I8 q) x5 H/ \  z. H! F6 e( H4 q( U
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
& ]; ^6 q& d. q- r' i
9 ^( g1 ?( ^8 c2 o4 q9 DHe said he had gone to private school before now.9 u; V, N3 m/ A3 ?) u0 y! u( g

+ {' N7 W9 J; w6 A/ v2 K  u* m' DI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.9 N7 |; r+ H+ p; k7 L" W
  L0 P7 w* h6 W7 k. L' c- P
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
+ G; r1 Q* p3 D0 l2 l9 V3 @/ T/ U' v
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.4 a+ x% g& ]( {) T2 r$ g
: j* {! ~3 d; \0 U3 R. i- _
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.; Q4 l" ?9 Y# k. h& B/ P- w0 s

9 p" b% ?# h' C+ H4 EHe said yes.
" G3 ^# n' r% [; W: c$ ~
& |3 o1 R4 n7 w! H% SWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
, K+ L7 M0 m5 a9 c7 z
& Y( J) N% G; H' L; c& |! O) C9 dMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.; W, y# C4 c) F
! Y4 ~' L& E. B7 T2 K, O# c3 b
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!! j& x8 S. c: _- o% a, U) Q% z& S

- t" Z5 ], W! x2 _- O: T" He just laughed and handed me half the books.) w' `# |5 X2 m7 E2 }5 D4 u8 o

! g/ E6 n! j9 O( @Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
1 T6 N8 K) y+ `. S
  H& q$ h' J+ `When we were seniors, we began to think
6 v" u5 x) {+ V& N, `' XAbout college.
7 Z# J8 c7 g9 A4 |/ _; l
4 T7 }( q, v, M' {* ?8 F6 xKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
* U# w# H" n4 u) m3 _Was going to Duke.
, ~0 z6 ]4 X/ X+ z# {
. c: |" D$ f+ oI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
7 f$ e$ K# I% q8 `0 y7 F* d# g! T) v6 A
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
9 l; M- O6 ^5 h5 Y1 C
; L  U, k/ I) b' bKyle was valedictorian of our class.3 b( x( N6 [( ^
" ?7 f6 D# |1 }2 A- E7 J" Z
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
0 x& q6 s5 o3 T# r
! X3 P( |; b+ J0 ]0 WHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.0 |9 u" H" d/ }: A0 W+ s
( \  e0 b2 S  l' c1 C5 J
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
! c6 X+ G0 J' @5 Q) S( l0 q+ q& o- @% N# m( K  K
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
8 Q2 r1 X+ h0 v0 W4 R- j9 z; o4 n1 j+ N) K  A
He looked great.
  X) K: Q* c0 W) Y' @5 l0 _. V5 E; i7 K7 o4 r2 e( ~
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.6 D! }: P+ X/ l- p" z1 z. X6 ]: s- V

% ?/ d% m; i( S0 c, BHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

$ z5 d- I: n( p& v/ V8 _He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
3 I4 o5 O' s' z' f; B  Q, m8 I# N- W! |5 n6 w
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
; R7 ?" F! h( H- u. ^* e( V7 P4 ]) t
Today was one of those days.
' M% s, ], e! Y! K4 Z
: |( r9 @1 L' U: P/ G6 DI could see that he was nervous about his speech.- V- z& v# B/ Z( A& @
0 V' \1 G4 h! |8 c2 l
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
% s% p5 V% e# ^
2 c9 R* s! P9 _& OHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
: Z+ J) a6 A# v/ H7 b7 A  O1 q
9 T- |, t/ r: Z, U$ |"Thanks," he said.$ c6 b) U* d: y2 k9 N6 E7 N8 ]. }

* K8 z( t. E* d! f2 k; h5 wAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began8 G% J- T) |7 K0 j, o* E" n

- w% k, g, W9 M9 x# ["Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.8 p6 [5 w2 W5 @
; }. @7 G' C% P$ t
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
3 x* a  }7 t. a: l# Y
! Y" p9 f7 L. X* MI am here to tell all of you that being a
( L0 |; Y9 O2 G, b4 N# x0 aFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.) E9 p5 t5 Y% _9 F

$ p. v8 l) e9 w. c8 CI am going to tell you a story."; u8 r# u) A+ U
1 Y* r1 |9 R; q# r3 ?7 q- ~
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.; ^1 K# O- g5 y. b, x' R2 j* T; w
" a2 L0 I  X1 c/ H# l
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
7 X0 e# C3 _/ r( l1 x
% l" r+ }! Y2 g9 [$ k5 x& }5 t; g' OHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.$ j& o$ F' m( {

' v6 z6 P8 s9 B9 c6 s% c# f" W# NHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.8 k' h2 ]2 k+ t/ e8 \1 K

2 @3 H- C: |: g/ S  [5 x"Thankfully, I was saved.6 E* }) Y5 j& y  B9 [' M

  M% I0 m+ }  K5 K+ v( a- WMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."9 I5 V  o& z# Z/ G

9 Q2 U/ d  P  K3 F- K( DI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.: ^, }8 q' b3 v: \

8 N9 V) Y8 M. P9 \* X4 ^) hI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
4 J! {/ {1 b5 k; a; z; r3 p# K9 x5 m& r: t0 L. E2 f
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
0 c" [1 N6 W% U) d  H4 X% P7 ~  W6 K4 {
Never underestimate the power of your actions.* M& [8 c$ L0 x

' R- }; D3 x2 d9 mWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.- c$ O8 D/ \, r1 g$ G% U
( J& q$ ]6 D/ x* M# M8 S/ L  O$ q
For better or for worse.8 B# U% S6 p1 p
6 S. @/ G# N9 ]
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.; S7 Z4 s7 T9 U  E
; q6 p3 A+ V% n8 x
Look for God in others.
: e! d, ^3 n& V1 A8 u+ n* O6 S, B3 g0 ?, ^  b, L/ W7 q
You now have two choices, you can:
  {" D/ c$ e5 @; {( W
) C% U2 g: R- r, g1) Pass this on to your friends or
5 ]; a2 \  f8 J6 W& @' c! l
" E+ G  g, Q, f! ]2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
8 h/ M/ O: I: a0 [: y
$ Z$ H3 V( I- `; [! CAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ q* [1 Y7 z( x3 Q8 s0 f- F( P9 a- v"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
. e: ^8 T+ x: P& S; P; I6 E& b
% Q( Y' c6 t8 ]! @There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.  L! n1 J7 s7 U9 B2 A

& E' ~, Q, [: O% @& Z$ O" X5 g- |Tomorrow is mystery.% `" b$ o! S( w6 k# z  r: j
* Z+ {/ }+ b$ \% |; N# V- F: t
Today is a gift./ u! [# Y: ~% C
8 \/ A% w) a$ ~( X

Tomorrow is mystery.  ?0 E+ K3 i; g$ F) C: ?9 e! ]
% j+ g* s% ]# y( K/ w
Today is a gift.
