One day, when I was a freshman in high school,* i3 N0 L1 w/ z
* a, O0 f# x$ o) H! jI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

His name was Kyle.

It looked like he was carrying all of his! m. t1 \* ?6 K9 F! i( \
Books.

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.

+ {* e6 a/ `3 c: n. p' wThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt., z' [) u: g8 j' N2 b4 ?
9 Y! I4 y7 C5 ^6 ] uHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.* A, x# x) I# s

He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes; z9 _3 M9 z+ _4 h
/ w$ r# V9 C- a- u# w. ^My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
$ w% W" E8 ]9 J, ` x+ F+ D' W) v' i$ Y; y p" j
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.

8 l* k# n3 d: e. G8 M$ UThey really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.. X/ u0 Z8 f+ _- ~: e/ }4 ]$ C
& J' e5 ^# q& [; J/ f/ bHe said he had gone to private school before now.

/ L0 A0 D! V. fWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid." {/ R+ G; H9 L4 \' s9 `

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.0 R. K9 f! q5 j+ f9 x/ l6 z2 D U
1 K% \- J' \/ A. U6 D9 XHe said yes.

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him. S Y, s5 |+ H) d

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

" }+ m. r% z6 B6 W4 t( ZI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!4 ?' H2 u8 n, w
8 a7 Q2 E& w" b* A( K" He just laughed and handed me half the books.6 m* s1 h4 E7 X& W
5 N2 r& y# w9 m8 COver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.% t- }- p1 C0 o" P, z% ]5 n- u

Was going to Duke.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

He had to prepare a speech for graduation.

% _8 ], n% ~& U( b sGraduation day, I saw Kyle.& V8 Y9 e0 u7 ~

He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

Today was one of those days.

/ I8 `. I1 ^! d4 T9 zHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.2 M' ]! T0 N, j( j: E5 G/ C

"Thanks," he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began- H- U1 A8 `) K! _) y8 r$ _

"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

3 x% K3 ?! A4 `Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.

He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

"Thankfully, I was saved.

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

For better or for worse.

As you can see, I took choice number 1.
