I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
' p: H9 | H; w0 xam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,' H- A- Q' q7 b+ T' R' H
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
7 q C8 C0 l- { \. wattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
- K9 @/ \+ c; k: A6 U' p% Uwill acquire language earlier and faster.
3 L( M! ]& O! E9 s7 D+ ~( W
( K. {* c) B' g n+ Z; v' f* q; AIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately/ C5 F2 ]& b! H* P% f
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
# a9 W$ I0 E, v+ ]6 g8 N! v/ \: j4 dvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
* B1 O4 i9 q8 }/ j4 k! msimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
7 ?' ?' c$ o6 {0 r' W' ?may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your$ X! D* |0 b4 u1 n
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used., o4 `- p) P" E7 a
- i) ?% E7 d7 ]& |4 S S4 q
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common9 {' t2 G) [8 u- \; f; l" P8 d
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and$ J4 L2 f5 \ Z% f$ c
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes., B5 {3 N; q& N5 D
6 h- }7 {4 u, V: L% OStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously6 t3 I0 F/ Q x5 J
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby+ z+ j; B) d+ o
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to5 Y4 B2 T# ?6 b
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.! S/ R! |; D. I" ^# K
+ x7 G& K; i5 |9 E
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,1 u$ m2 D. H' M
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
$ [2 Y% w7 |# P/ O3 \* `: I/ \) i5 R) B4 hover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she, O6 D1 H9 o# V! Y& D% Z3 Z
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will9 ]3 Q, w& `/ E7 u4 i8 r2 t8 L U. F
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate y4 k) a2 V+ o$ j3 c6 E

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data% K8 l% G: p! g7 S
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
; {8 e2 o q: n5 y1 J. uvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used3 j t4 R# r% l0 t3 @
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and1 U1 b# \: Y% ~# M. _/ _8 } K
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
) n5 Y+ s# B2 e8 rand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of8 B+ c" r u5 h: U8 t
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
3 F7 w+ F! x" [. o5 pjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child, O0 k: y7 Y u" m
and the parents participating in this study.
