I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
8 v5 _% o* }4 d7 eam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,! C* l f$ X C$ y( J
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and0 N8 Q. P6 Y8 g6 S; w5 j
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
0 O3 M6 G4 c; ^" }! d) Awill acquire language earlier and faster.4 c* C, k, r! K
; n' e/ P( z) b, a' s7 ]7 o; p7 A1 h! }In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately0 ~6 f2 B1 u5 p7 T- G
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
' ?5 f, l% r; Hvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or/ U6 w7 B5 E( G7 w
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
7 E% m+ u0 S6 T( E' Z& qmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your' X! P; s# o8 `! N% ], L! j) v2 P
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
9 }& S! s& f2 I( R8 y; ebehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
2 l& J: E( L6 i8 Xthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

7 ?8 K" W7 O8 A. Q5 \6 C' w8 }Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously, F# }% ^% D: ]/ q
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby* O9 I( h# `( _
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
# O0 M$ z2 F; g+ `( U( Q5 Bthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.1 A2 j z: d9 n0 W" W
6 f$ N/ r; T! F4 A1 {* k' BFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
V0 E1 i% \, I! F9 x; Ethe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.& Z: n0 K5 `2 V
. {/ A( u u6 \) RThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
" M. ?3 N1 a% q- I# l9 oover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
: M3 W1 W& \2 q/ C3 {* q, r7 Bis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will8 r1 ^- n9 E2 k3 w2 q% b2 }; o
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate4 K1 l& D! y; s7 P" i, c7 s; N
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
2 G2 H& i) E' p/ pAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
5 A, Z% s6 c* b oare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show1 ] j& @0 z6 S2 q: Y% n
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
6 M" i w9 ^7 s# Win the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
+ q* h6 @8 N! u5 [0 z8 Udestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
3 D; Y. ^: m# a/ X& n) F8 jand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
! B, u, ~' n. X7 d8 A$ \8 ?Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific/ R7 l# P7 q2 v& q9 J
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
