I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I; t$ z( H4 M: `! P
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
6 s: q: h% \ dconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
: K, _6 ?' C8 I: u# Z S. E aattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
, p' J; P" w, x2 d! M1 fwill acquire language earlier and faster.

+ A/ J" b4 a& \9 U: `+ {In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
9 ?% k5 p& [5 M30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop# T4 {1 {2 B" _5 t% B
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
* ]3 l; r) S+ _0 W0 K y% B8 ?simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you7 D) S+ d# u% U( d3 Z% w$ x
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your e3 {, d' ]; }. T2 v' S
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used. j1 P# p- M2 t' I5 y

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common2 K( n8 W8 ~0 O0 x* m- O& _
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
4 {8 z% ?+ R% a. @, ythose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.5 S! F# W* E; Y% J a* ?
7 ]; B& L- w3 P. m% P4 YStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
" L+ U( _6 l: x8 F0 S( Yproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
( T5 Z, m0 X9 S( V) B' ^6 n; xknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
+ U i5 Y- c0 F2 p# p5 athose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,6 t! F6 N/ P' D7 `5 Q; g) A
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.. |. \" K( O0 Z. I4 O. v; D
8 [. ?2 K2 i# o+ k* L' L8 SThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
7 z# S9 N, a% M5 c3 ~" pover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
4 s' Z7 f0 j( Vis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
! F$ t q4 D% ]& x0 T' L) ntake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

, e' l& H; o5 o7 XAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data! f$ o4 I0 G9 F9 u8 K7 [2 t
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
1 z3 f1 A: F! G( P* ?) ~( Ivideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
: r k8 `2 h" _) R. Y6 A$ Cin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and0 y! Q( ~& y$ y
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,8 R+ @! A; M) a9 | O6 _
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
+ F4 l4 X# A3 r) K9 h% uHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific( j+ z1 y2 d3 d
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child% G% E( i; S9 E% X5 f
and the parents participating in this study.
