* `( U! h* b- k6 C8 E$ F( uI think the biggest misconception with flu shots/influenza is that people assume that any time they feel really crappy, that it's "The flu". For example, people coming in telling me that they got a flu shot and now they are down with vomiting and diarrhea, therefore, they have "The Flu". Influenza is a respiratory illness marked by high fever, body aches and coughing with a rapid onset. It has NO gastrointestinal symptoms whatsoever. People can also get really bad colds during the winter (because of being stuck inside with a whole bunch of other people who are coughing and sneezing). A flu shot provides no protection against cold viruses, but because the symptoms are somewhat similar (cold - coughing, sneezing, low grade fever, runny nose), people get confused. The only way to tell for sure if it's influenza is to have a nasal/throat swab done. If it grows out influenza, then that's what you've got. The thing that is scary is that people DIE from influenza, and it's highly contagious. It behooves us to protect ourselves as best we can. Of course, handwahsing is still the most important way of preventing transmission. So is covering your mouth when you cough and we recommend that you cough into the crook of your arm actually. That way, you keep from coughing germs all over your hands that you then use to touch other people, objects, etc. |
