each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and
! u. x9 m& C- ^+ f3 l# {5 s' tshaved perfectly applied, even though he is legally blind, moved to a
& ` N% E, F2 Y# n& M- vnursing home today.
+ T" L$ b6 R- X. Z( \( O- v. e/ D2 @- |* d6 e
His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. ; M. q0 _0 p! k. s4 J; ]
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home,
4 w- ]8 c1 e2 D( P) `, \" A. ?: Jhe smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. ; U# D* ~7 b7 J8 P+ N
: g# y) p7 R& p, TAs he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual ' \- [8 L3 T) u' B9 _! V
description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been ; R/ z0 _3 a) D7 z' m0 x9 l
hung on his window. 8 h. Q9 |% G+ I# P) Z3 g
6 n# H# |! ~5 Q* ~"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having ; k# A3 h% B% u3 Q4 y
just been presented with a new puppy. 2 H$ X& J. H6 v, v) `

"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

! f: l J, t+ Y. R) \"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
) l G, L. y2 ^* b- B6 h. ^room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how

It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. % p4 s4 B* Q' a3 S; S9 T& h% e
! N2 Y; b f$ U5 c; P) l% B7 R5 OI have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I 4 L! O7 \/ ^, Q! F3 ~
have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed * X% @ g0 d9 R5 q5 T% ~) @
and be thankful for the ones that do. ) E9 D" [; B. R+ j
: X$ r9 P4 r, G; a$ ^, ]8 Q. ]0 p2 bEach day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new 5 z8 w/ w# D+ @" h' [/ J) q
day and all the happy memories I've stored away. 8 \7 D- `8 f* z% ?; c

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

7 g' N- M& E8 A6 A- G, Z* JSo, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank
