　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
: \, K* O' A2 j# U* Q/ M! h　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,
; g7 U; {  R+ O. b2 u3 F6 H
　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
/ Q4 D2 F1 x2 ?' v1 Q4 h" s1 ^4 R
　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　On a fine day, the land,

9 I3 K+ w5 N4 k8 J　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

, h$ U8 A4 m, P# \* \　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

4 N, P3 J9 s# t6 Y　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

3 B, a; U" {6 R* v) _  E, F　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
; `  A8 V  Z+ m4 D
　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

! W2 o1 E/ N5 Z  l# f0 c5 @' g　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
7 N! t" k4 U% o' M! r
　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

. I8 i9 I2 l3 G  o　　All are past and gone!

7 p/ t: t! s1 `4 U　　For truly great men
