　　North country scene:

　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
/ s4 C! i8 y# w
　　One single white immensity.
  j; P$ ~, @2 F& m9 B; J% W8 g
　　The Yellow River"s swift current

9 m6 ]3 |  }$ @5 f' O: g0 H, b. z4 X) G　　Is stilled from end to end.

& L1 b6 e1 t: o5 ~# w8 [7 y　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
$ l+ ~, s$ G/ U4 ~4 t1 z. {
! c7 v$ c, Q  P+ R6 ~　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,
2 U# [7 C* ]1 l# X0 M
　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

' g+ P, E& t; }' U) N) K6 L　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.
) h: q+ J+ w, l
　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
