8 b$ x& z1 B! a* m! _I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.3 S; J+ L0 X1 q h7 h3 R [
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
& `, v1 h9 E# GEngagement Training.1 H) [3 t" \: y* t( K
1 x* ~+ g* r- Q2 G# c+ HWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
% I2 U. J1 v/ w4 t0 \(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
7 F1 }! l" F1 ] d) f/ D* Pgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work- N) n8 d1 @9 F+ i
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy8 E1 ~, w. A0 b, \6 b
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South* i2 a1 p0 i) ]) f# W+ K
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
4 c9 d8 r. o! Mof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter% o- [) {- d* m: q
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
% x. {, ^& @) N5 uinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
- p; ^- z8 ~: l1 i) r: D" qthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
9 O y$ K l2 z( nIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the9 d/ U3 S! R5 I- j
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed: l8 T2 Q' M$ E
international peacekeeping operation.
$ c" M; b+ q" z' j ~% L) N$ L+ F, t. G2 [, p4 u
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
- G0 J( X# U% W( L3 K% U4 _6 h& nown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people6 J. f3 S8 ~* p% x* ]9 `: ]! R# h
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV; K$ q8 V7 k( J0 n
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and& P; l1 m; R- e' m
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
; O& x# t$ I4 d- P) w9 z# S% bimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs6 `( |# I7 b7 ]- q/ z( j
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

- |* x; x2 N, zAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the' _2 {& D9 v+ [8 p( ?9 k! P' o
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
( v! n( v+ S) k2 Q" S% Zprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
3 g" N) p: m" {* bhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
+ _& `( `( d1 E" \Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,/ i, k8 n" q8 u( B" q
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
