In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
, B" L8 b: o. m8 L2 S5 oEngagement Training.7 {8 `: @* ~- Y; _( I2 h* X
- @* r3 S5 v$ t! u) W) y0 o
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
# `5 P% n0 \2 @ z R9 c(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
8 f# E D$ e, _+ v1 s. egroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
+ n# R: O# b; a$ M5 c- o$ Gtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy. i# Q, X0 }+ D8 s% G
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.. b Q% t3 [; z# v

, e" J" E6 x0 @) @+ d6 a5 aPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
4 `; V; o& c) p. W. [" Pof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter1 _/ G, O6 w( U% H4 |9 u
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the* x+ Y) ]8 N) r# P) ~
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
) b: ?; ~/ u; b! _) K9 t5 t/ Hthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter2 p# S9 w. s% Y/ m5 Q! R# }) {8 t
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
' F( m9 b: G; `4 W( v9 sisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
5 `- l! T+ n# }8 R( d: Iinternational peacekeeping operation.

. j" @ o) l$ O! {* M' SThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their$ W. z9 O5 t( A2 a6 m) t
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people4 Y( G+ u' q1 S
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
: ?& N: I' j y; J, ?2 Z% Qscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and( q% u' l$ i4 N t
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
/ g- d/ A" t+ M K- Mimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs' I3 J) F' V1 g" }8 [$ r
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!$ F/ J% c) J! I

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
$ A* J# F- a8 F+ w& p7 T- X0 Zsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole2 {+ h3 F- [ f0 N1 P6 S
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the( u9 E6 t: V, `- J
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.8 y: t0 h/ c9 D2 E* p) ]/ _
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,/ _. z+ Q+ u$ Y; I4 O" |, L
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
