I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
* `$ C( h6 i: @* CIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
/ N `* f* W' c- p9 TEngagement Training.

' D' R0 g3 n) g3 G7 K5 Q' \2 JWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,) ^- b* G0 N+ e& u9 b9 j
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood& [- p+ i+ b9 s% @" }% u7 [' [0 V6 `
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work; ~" ^3 I6 o, L
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
* X4 j6 y3 y: }) z. L D) aCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

' W; m0 D; L8 y! HPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years% j* {/ B% l8 |; Q$ |) H% d
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
; u7 k1 H. i* r' H* oconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
, |, Q( y' l+ B/ Y1 Rinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
9 M0 J! r. E3 q% @; ?they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
5 ?) L; r0 K% L( V' ~Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the- U. ?, z6 e4 M0 @/ @, F: \
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
2 P% N$ {9 M0 Q* A# N& N( tinternational peacekeeping operation.7 L% q: r! k1 |' ]6 @' @

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their) a6 k5 m) ]4 S# Y2 _: c' T
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people2 ~8 a# U1 A% R3 S" N$ M
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV( ?+ E* [; q1 W2 E0 R2 z5 h
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and8 ?% {- [; _0 W) b+ ]- L
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems, Y9 `" u K7 b
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs. v7 ^1 o2 u8 F- u+ V1 C" y
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!. W' M" w8 z; `4 s* R, B4 @
& P8 j: }* I: k9 O8 q- S' j/ J
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the% g; g3 p. `) h2 v/ B1 W6 m6 ?3 ~! b
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
. N2 J. Y1 Q% k$ F1 _+ U% Xprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the( s9 O% D+ s# u9 l# S
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
) E% R& P6 l3 A6 d4 _8 rAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,* | H1 N4 |2 _* X, y- h# K$ ~
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in.". M- J2 @: s* r
