1) Community Dialogue Project Phase 1
. h2 x V( b' N4 t1 ^ L/ L) FI'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
% V g, @" D, r* Y) P/ q+ SIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
2 a" V3 C! X* @/ i2 _Engagement Training.6 M7 S8 H& G# g! w
4 G( c- b4 y8 L: z" s: D; bWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
% w3 S- X# A) u5 w(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
6 T$ S4 {- ^+ u7 _groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
& g0 \& x4 E% r& T+ n5 `2 Atogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
: E& P7 N" w8 q8 E- F! `) U) d( P# bCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.7 O* a/ P @7 Z& C# Y- {: v" q# V

; ^. X; t: F7 t2 ~+ ASet on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
( A4 |+ S, L V; ~Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
9 ?( t( p) j& r2 U' }7 `% K% e1 Vof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
( E! \+ z" W9 s, H5 n) vconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the7 I! C2 s+ O) a0 s" d
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
& X; v3 ]/ T% N. h! L9 z4 vthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
3 v( _' w7 x3 ]4 x" y. AIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the7 B: f* u5 y3 u6 x
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
3 ?! i5 [/ S+ ]) _' v/ h( }; ginternational peacekeeping operation.
& A! d- ^. B: Z* l5 a2 \% L0 S$ O# `
+ m/ }! V: W" K4 L0 jThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
5 V9 a1 _6 u) Pown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
, s: G3 k: i! {4 Owho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV P/ G$ f0 S- v5 L% i
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
4 W% w$ l2 q" k$ `Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems7 U* h p( o C# L2 A* T1 ^
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs1 e( i1 Q+ f' C. X: ]
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
5 a4 l2 _+ Q, i7 v4 d' G# Q/ r; T
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the2 k4 Z3 E+ }9 K6 Y% U: e
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole% q# j- F) i; R" M* C5 n
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
[8 R% G2 C7 s( l- U! R( L( nhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
0 F, x# M/ N+ z" w: P. G4 A; [' IAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,1 a/ E! |& q8 m( Z
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."# ]; g, G* _8 B b0 h9 `3 [* x
