I, L$ H$ A! V" d5 W/ M, tI'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.) ]. {: Q" V7 z( Y3 J: U( k
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community) n' H( A _4 U8 d, V
Engagement Training.2 ~. E3 B% O! |9 H/ i
/ G' j2 _5 W m) A6 Y
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
! ~' r: K# P4 V. } o(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
% g# L) F3 r% R: `+ i: ^groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
& b, v; R; ~0 h, x# n* \! Atogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy- I. e5 a! y5 A( C8 q
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years8 N# v6 K# r* U
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter+ D- ]/ U9 o$ N; _
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
2 v/ o2 Y: d+ P/ jinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:9 M) J: t3 k. c$ \$ F% E
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
- M2 _$ R/ A, E! R/ WIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
1 {8 K- G( Q* ~3 T( w N' S: S, risland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
1 u% W( _) i8 u4 Tinternational peacekeeping operation." P2 S! G* f X. N: S
' V9 \+ {8 V6 C5 v! Z: Y2 BThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their, g2 {! ?0 i1 o$ W' Q" i
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
% Z- j7 g, y8 D7 k7 e* f" p- y/ Ewho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
$ j6 O6 V* Z. z) Qscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
4 j+ [7 A6 o! QAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems8 H& t! F9 M7 F7 i
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs% G* Z+ r+ }3 S/ u `# [
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!$ A9 a1 i: E; J3 e( B# R" i
9 i/ Q, ~; K# B/ WAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the6 P3 y4 h( ~ D8 ]% W4 D& v2 c
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole" I. t; z( [6 w& v# m+ A0 W
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
9 j* s( v* h! O9 i, Lhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
! b3 e: ]$ \9 H4 m$ EAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,* b8 m+ e7 m' O$ M: t
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
