Lindsay targets rural crime

CALGARY -- Alberta's new solicitor general hopes to have more boots walking the beat this year, intensifying the fight against crime in the province. . Z) Z2 C( _$ P T0 x3 A- Z T: T
1 h0 Z; n9 O+ }8 ~% A! Q* ~+ |/ {Fred Lindsay told Sun Media yesterday plans are in the works to increase the number of RCMP officers and special constables patrolling Alberta roads this year.

: v( q& V4 E/ V5 E u- i: G1 SThough any moves have to be approved in the province's budget, Lindsay said he's looking at boosting the ranks of the Mounties patrolling rural Alberta, to help curb a flood of urban organized crime groups, who are moving their operations to rural areas where there is less of a police presence. # f3 T3 m2 |7 z; c+ h

Chop shops, where stolen cars are stripped for parts, and marijuana grow-ops have all started to sprout up throughout rural Alberta, said Lindsay.
