CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

Connects Logistics, the sole supplier to all liquor merchants in the province, will be able to raise its rates Feb. 25, but not to the levels it recently asked for., T$ u! }0 b# F i& @8 q
7 ~5 G' r2 [. k0 {! c' f N* e# lThe industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.( }' f+ P& ~3 @5 R- n( P
. F- e9 q( l: TThat's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.5 @0 O0 A; b' ^) z* `7 _
3 w+ P: T; m- W7 H% B6 l6 CThe increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
