The Class 5 Road Test for New Drivers
What activities will I do during my road test?2 D1 P! d0 y5 F+ Z5 U( o7 s3 l

The road test is about 25 to 30 minutes long, including instructions and feedback.

· how to identify and operate the vehicle controls/ H6 D; F0 M* f" B
· how to do right and left turns legally and safely

· how to manage controlled and uncontrolled intersections! r; k* I- n% u

The road test will run the full time unless the Examiner feels that your safety, or the safety of others, is at risk.( ?+ ?* p/ @# E# T Y# @
For example, if you do not show good judgment of time and distance when turning left in front of oncoming traffic,2 A7 N. f# M7 C" V7 Q$ O$ M

Who is my Examiner?4 L6 ^" T2 m' G4 o2 M G
/ p& k( w$ {7 U M$ p· The Examiner will introduce him/herself and provide proof of identification, when requested.
+ d& u) h# [2 [) o· All Driver Examiners are licensed by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation under the Driver Training
: z3 h' ~8 |' v$ j& [) p% iand Driver Examination Regulation. They are monitored to ensure they provide high quality road3 N6 x. b4 a$ E( {1 p S
tests. They should be courteous and professional, keeping conversation at all times relevant to the: A: a+ Z& h3 t& A( E4 P
road test.

What do I bring for my road test?+ h" o6 Y* V/ _
5 E3 D# `' C. a# e· You must have your Learner’s licence. If you have a temporary licence (non-photo)
2 z; |/ B8 e" P. f2 _( xthen you must also provide acceptable photo ID.
7 H' q$ g8 c! n& x· Wear clothing that is practical for driving and comfort. It should be appropriate for the$ X4 E/ h" i" C P5 M
weather conditions (in case your vehicle breaks down and you have to wait or walk).
3 I, U4 l8 ~9 E* H2 }· Your vehicle must meet all legal requirements (good mechanical condition, valid
2 j8 |5 h5 T* e- l# tinsurance and registration) and have enough fuel for at least one hour of driving.

A receipt will be provided when requested.

demonstrate two of the instruments or controls inside the vehicle, such as the hazard lights and windshield5 [# F. ^9 _. F
wipers. The Examiner will provide information before you move the vehicle about the route and the instructions

While Driving …

· You will be given ample instruction in advance for each manoeuvre and activity.
/ S8 X+ _5 M% G· Points will be assigned for errors. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 points to pass the road test.
3 n9 g+ i# d5 m% }0 tYou must not do anything that is considered unlawful, dangerous, or unsafe, (for example, speeding or not( I0 h i# Q& M- y! f/ G( [
stopping at a stop sign).' ^4 O& f! `; t
· The Examiner will not try to trick you.
7 e6 |' w, i5 M5 \5 A8 W· The Examiner will not ask you to do anything illegal.
/ |# A# [* v5 Y) i3 E; k3 c· When the road test is finished, the Examiner will highlight the areas you performed well, as well as* Y8 b# y$ ^( D, w7 g
the areas you need to improve upon. The points for errors will be explained at this time.

What do I do when I pass my road test?

* s, z* i$ x9 NThe Examiner will give you a copy of the Driver Examination Checklist form. You will also be given a copy of the6 t5 j$ x( Q. A: f4 E0 k% v5 t& V
Test Permit. This will indicate that you have passed. Take this permit, along with your learner’s licence, to any
/ o, k C& ?0 ~4 ]! [7 {Alberta Registry Agent to have your licence changed to a Class 5 Probationary Licence. There will be a fee for this4 ^ {) D* ?# v; Q& j
service.
