The Class 5 Road Test for New Drivers
What activities will I do during my road test?

The road test will run the full time unless the Examiner feels that your safety, or the safety of others, is at risk.

· The Examiner will introduce him/herself and provide proof of identification, when requested.
b7 R% t& x6 G/ n; D% F( f· All Driver Examiners are licensed by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation under the Driver Training
. L( U1 r" v% _; e7 Y$ nand Driver Examination Regulation. They are monitored to ensure they provide high quality road
' J* L" L( S% k# Vtests. They should be courteous and professional, keeping conversation at all times relevant to the

: R3 z( _4 d6 A, H! f+ BWhat do I bring for my road test?

& N, B" o/ m x1 N: W· You must have your Learner’s licence. If you have a temporary licence (non-photo)2 @- ]) b* Q+ S& m @& h& v
then you must also provide acceptable photo ID.* A: W X; A7 {4 M: ~ h+ Z
· Wear clothing that is practical for driving and comfort. It should be appropriate for the
) i5 L! F# b+ L6 b" p$ {weather conditions (in case your vehicle breaks down and you have to wait or walk).
( Q8 Y! F. v$ w$ W! U9 ?8 P. k· Your vehicle must meet all legal requirements (good mechanical condition, valid
9 Q% V- Q9 X0 f" s5 sinsurance and registration) and have enough fuel for at least one hour of driving.

The Examiner will do a vehicle check with you. You will be in the driver’s seat and the examiner will ask you to+ ]! z$ N5 f' R% Q
assist in checking the signal and brake lights, horn, brakes, and steering. You will be asked to describe and
: B3 Y/ u) Q3 ^4 x Idemonstrate two of the instruments or controls inside the vehicle, such as the hazard lights and windshield( Y1 [1 m& t' Q" \$ K/ h
wipers. The Examiner will provide information before you move the vehicle about the route and the instructions

1 e* @3 ?5 g+ I8 X/ ]% ^· Points will be assigned for errors. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 points to pass the road test.
. V4 F0 {2 o! y( ~" [' E' x+ vYou must not do anything that is considered unlawful, dangerous, or unsafe, (for example, speeding or not y: d6 x: C! e; \6 y& r e
stopping at a stop sign).6 T4 ^& W7 D2 p8 w
· The Examiner will not try to trick you.

· When the road test is finished, the Examiner will highlight the areas you performed well, as well as M* ?& s x- @) ^
the areas you need to improve upon. The points for errors will be explained at this time.

What do I do when I pass my road test?

2 G& j$ C+ s2 r x+ mThe Examiner will give you a copy of the Driver Examination Checklist form. You will also be given a copy of the1 i& S, H" ^+ r( L" F( x' _
Test Permit. This will indicate that you have passed. Take this permit, along with your learner’s licence, to any V. D% c; q5 u1 P- ]7 B9 z
Alberta Registry Agent to have your licence changed to a Class 5 Probationary Licence. There will be a fee for this
3 T0 ?) G8 q% V5 ~service.

What do I do if I do not pass my road test?

not passed. Keep the form and bring it to your next road test. You may not take another road test on the same day.
