我的那个CANTILEVER实际上是两个，在同一侧，都在房子的侧面，而且靠得不太远：一个是GREAT ROOM 的 FIREPALCE；另一个就是那个让我发愁的DEN。

他们（DRAFTING）是这样解释的：1）Delete 60''*48''s added to den and bonus room window in cantilevers are not permitted when cantilever extends into side yard, as per Alberta building code. (BONUS ROOM 就是在DEN 的楼上位置。）
                  2） Delete 2-- 30''*60''p windows in great room, percentage of windows in side of home exceeds alberta building code.

                   我对那个SALES LADY 说，我非常难过DEN 里没有窗户（因为showhome是有一个TRANSFORM WINDOW的呀），所以她又去问上面能不能加一个WIRING WINDOW。现在还没有得到答复。我还是不太理解关于WIRING WINDOW 的SECURITY 的解释。

Low-E实际上就是在玻璃上做一层金属镀膜(Metallic coating)，Low-E中的E是Emissivity的简写。这层镀膜允许太阳光透过或反射，它的作用主要是将波长较长的光波反射回去，提高U-factor并减少冬天的热量损失。和充氩气(Argon/Kryton)等气体不同，它会细微的影响一点儿透光律(visible transmittance)，这也就是你从侧面能看到Low-E的玻璃有颜色的原因(通常发绿色的多一些，但也有粉色，蓝色等其他颜色的)。Low-E也分种类，镀到哪一层是有说法的，效果也大有不同。

1 f  S% n6 ~1 x& EDouble Paned Window就是双层窗，也叫double glazing。两层窗之间有1/2英寸到3/4英寸的距离，你要细心看会看到2层的(俺们东北老式的两层窗间距是10多厘米，那叫一个厚实)。比传统的单层窗的好处是中间可以充惰性气体(或空气)，减少室外噪音和易于清洁。更好的当然是3层窗。其实在墙上开窗和在墙上开洞是一个意思。通常的双层窗的R-value是R2，如果墙是R20的话窗也就是它的1/10，这也就是开窗越多越费能源的原由。窗的能量损耗是占很大一块的，我见过萨省得一个节能房将整个房子的窗户都加上了window shutter，因为窗的散热主要是夜间，而夜间window shutter会关闭，是窗变成墙来减少散热。但我总觉得住在里边的人和偷渡的人住集装箱没什么区别，太憋屈了。

这个是正常的标准，3/8”稍微有点儿薄，要是7/16" 或1/2" 的O.S.B. 会更好一些，当然换成1/2" 的plywood会更好。保温会在你的spec的insulation部分里提到。通常墙是5 1/2" R20 Fiberglass Batt，这个是塞在两个stud之间的，所以不会在spec的framing部分说。更好一些的就是Sprayed-in polyurethane R25或在OSB外再贴一层R6的foam了。

谢谢您这么详细的回答。这么说LOW-E 和DOUBLE PANED WINDOW 应该是两个概念。他们只提了LOW-E，我也没看到双层，估计就是单层了。

这个7%的出处是在Alberta Building Code 2006的Section 9.10.15.4 Glazed Openings in Exposing Building Face. 这个要求也是基于防火要求的。你的wiring window可能也不行。尤其是去年Macewan一把大火烧的连building code对siding的要求都改了。Building permit的审查现在很重视和邻居的距离，尤其是新区住房间距非常小的情况。

我原来想过一个馊主义，但从来没有试过，如果你非常想的话可以试一试。因为这个规定是对”Glazed Opening”的，而glazing是专指玻璃。对Glazed Opening的定义是”Any opening in a door or wall that contains glass”。这样一解释你就明白了吧?我不用玻璃，用塑料不就完了!我和Mac Skylight的老板Rob打过些交到，如果可以的话你让他做一个塑料的天窗(不要像窗一样垂直， 70，80度左右就可以了)，价格应该不会超过你的窗，但缺点是你打不开，只能透光，不能透气。

我已经到网上去搜索玻璃砖了，现在明白了是啥了。问题是，似乎人家都用在家里面的隔断，而且是一面墙。没看到用在外面啊。而且，也不知道是不是很贵啊。

I chose acrylic because it is both ornamental and practical ( for light to go through in this case). As for R-value, I don't have scientific research data handy to compare but I believe it is more or less the same as a regular 2-panes window.

It occupies the same surface area on the wall as a window and I look at it as a picture-window, of course it is not as clear as glass but light does go through and serves this purpose well in my bat ...

这里在行人士很多，我也想借此问个问题。我们正在建新房，二层楼比一层要伸出来大约二英尺，想知道这伸出来的部分是否按一般墙一样的做保温处理。这样的房型，冬天是否不够保温？

还有一个问题，我的房子里有的stubs上有很大的树疤。感觉因为这个树疤，整个stub吃不住劲，好像重一点的东西就会把stub压断。不知道是否应该让builder换？

Of course, the overhang portion should be insulated as well.
For the "eyed" stud concern, I don't think it is an issue based on facts:

2/     It looks like it is an interior separation wall, not a load bearing one. If you still worry, just nail another stud next to it.                          
It may be worth pointing out that if builder use select grade lumber, you won't see any of this stud of imperfectness. (this is one of the reasons that some houses cost more to build and some cost less and you could never understand why; once the house finished and everything covered up, you are not able to see any difference)
