以感恩之心对所有帮助过我的人
o; R. ^$ q5 r6 f+ @$ V) u-在Edmonton Public School Board District Student Award Ceremonial 发言
# N, N! W% @- A& z4 k1 P, fGood evening, ladies and gentlemen, Superintendent Schmidt, trustees, principals, parents and fellow students.
% w* l; {. O, W x: \First of all, please allow me to express my regrets for not being able to join all the other award recipients. 7 E A( Q; N0 r7 F
I know that this speech is a difficult one to deliver, mostly because of its place on the schedule. I have no doubt that at this point, everyone is anxiously awaiting the second most exciting part of the evening: the food at the reception.
0 U1 Q& x1 W7 s/ a/ Q. }5 kThus, I’ve relegated this difficult task to my trusted mentor and principal, Dr. Yaniw.
3 @! i. M4 \4 F" hAs students, our lives are filled with endless tasks, ranging from social essays and math exams to sport tournaments and part-time jobs. Tonight, we take a break from our busy schedules to celebrate our achievements. We are mindful that while this evening attests to our diligence, enthusiasm and talent, we must continue to push ourselves in order to succeed.
( Z% u h) p1 [6 ^Tonight is also a night of thanksgiving. We know that our achievements are not ours alone. Without parents who wake up at 6 AM to drive us to school and teachers who stay late into the evening to coach the school teams, our achievements would not be possible.
! I) }; q2 G9 Q2 I4 q! [& zTonight, we should also give thanks to something that we rarely recognize. Our achievements are moulded upon its shoulders and our society’s interests are safeguarded by its efforts. We ought to thank the institution of public education. 2 [: T4 p. I. b0 d4 m- o
When I came to Canada at the age of nine, my family had neither money nor influence. In some parts of the world, those things are essential for a good education. Here in Edmonton, however, I was given the same opportunities as every other child in the city. I received instruction from passionate and creative teachers. There were volunteers and support staff who tutored me to improve my language skills. With their support, I was able to learn English within a year and fully function in the school environment. The phenomenal resources available to me through a public system allowed my parents to struggle for a better life knowing that I am receiving an adequate education. # u; D+ P; i2 d0 E$ i2 N/ e
We often take the public education system here in Edmonton for granted. Yet, we do not need to look farther than our neighbours to the South to realize that a fully functioning system is difficult to come by. . k% C; O: M2 q- Y K {. n3 I* `
Tonight, as students, we celebrate this system. We celebrate the commitment to public education, shown through the numerous devoted teachers and staff with whom we’ve had the pleasure of working. We celebrate the choices provided by public education, in which all students have the freedom to pursue their interests, wherever they may lie. We celebrate the equality of public education, which forms the basis of our democracy and defends the belief that all children should be able to realize their potential.
7 r& g, I# c+ A' m4 zWe celebrate the results of public education. Our accomplishments testify to those results and we affirm that not only have we benefitted from our schooling, it has shaped a brighter future for us.
( W: i/ S: }! f! j+ x5 \Thanksgiving was a few days ago, and we all know that we have many people to thank. Tonight, while others celebrate our accomplishments, we also take time to celebrate theirs. For me, I thank my teachers for their guidance and their knowledge. I thank my friends for their support, for they remind me I’m never alone. Above all, I thank my parents for their sacrifices, for their determination to build a better future for me. 4 w( s. L( J" I7 q* ?0 }! d( i
The award recipients tonight do not only distinguish themselves in terms of talent and achievement, but more importantly in terms of character. Our success is not contingent upon the awards we win, but is instead rooted upon our willingness to challenge ourselves, our courage to take risks, our determination in the face of failure and our sense of service for others. 0 |9 X' u v j& }& W z) t4 d: e
We are proud to be students here at Edmonton Public Schools.
" |* n0 O$ S+ ~2 yThank you to the organizers for a wonderful evening. Congratulations to all the award recipients and enjoy the food at the reception. |
