in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for , ~" v6 T W# ]. W' i5 M
680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment

is more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for

differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,

and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were ; Y, ^0 Q% A; [3 y5 T# O
asked to look for a residence on open market.

5 j6 C. U8 |1 F" r* v9 jWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has 0 _# r# s4 H3 A. ?) p: {
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid ) d8 e9 s, w0 z! o' Y8 m9 f
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
2 Z+ o" Z& o; Radmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 6 F. _/ U; \: Z/ y. `* l
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after 6 O4 y: ^2 P8 o$ W+ a8 U5 ^
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 7 u5 k+ R# j' K$ n1 v. a
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am ! Z3 m8 u* m& k1 k* v, p3 k
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of $ b- \6 v3 x7 R2 k. n5 v" A( L8 [, k; q
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was 7 ^, u' t% ~0 G
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
c$ N' j2 _1 D5 \, D% q' t! @is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 4 F' D* h2 m# j! m- Q7 G) f
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
* O& Q+ H3 f4 S
) I; z! E/ X1 Q* minitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
p7 J" S) J* u; ?2 F1 Y5 xgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
