6 ~3 P1 O e8 B" u( I7 wGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 5 d, O4 W% h P/ |/ ^. E1 t l* i
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ' f! b! y1 j& A1 v+ |' `( ~- `
news to report from that meeting.4 P+ c2 D* _ _# z* F
' {" f2 A4 f% L- d+ Q. Y0 f0 vFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
) \2 Q, a2 z7 uundergraduate international students from the increase to the
# |* o0 w, `- l& u: v$ Bdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% ], H& L+ Y* Ustudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base / A, L% o+ O( p0 X# G( t2 K# P
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ) Q* \3 Q+ P1 N' H' C- U8 T$ m
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 9 X9 s. I9 X z
the differential for international graduate students.1 b6 v) n: U2 P, N& N
$ c) B6 I* u' `% Q7 M6 H$ hNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
r- @1 {0 C J# Z6 ?increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 9 }/ c/ y5 I4 }7 k2 o
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students $ B' d! y, W9 H1 B0 N
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At i H6 n C/ D7 m8 Y
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in n1 c: @5 V7 ~/ G- }9 j! s0 \) T
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
; \* m) \" n8 M1 S4 M7 n$ [increases once they are here.

0 }0 e5 M3 q1 X! t4 wThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / D8 x( o& r Y" w. P" A# @' r
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I % u3 m" }* z' {) l1 G
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that . |& v T! C/ w; v
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
% X7 l$ W" z4 `increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
