Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. % A6 }$ _, S5 j: G, }; P6 T8 |/ e7 D

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
7 m* t$ L" Z+ ^; i2 A0 BCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ! k; r, o2 R& S# L
news to report from that meeting.
* j# v) |& H I/ g
. u, _$ V! i, _( E3 w( W' o1 cFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
" b" R2 L. {8 Y/ F6 U+ |undergraduate international students from the increase to the # t! v0 R# z% S$ o
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
2 ]: r7 S. T2 T' Ystudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ; o3 F6 |* Y9 ^9 Q8 J) K7 N
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 7 u1 f" j; C9 u1 t) D, W
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
$ q \8 Z/ G- T, B/ ?' ?$ Kthe differential for international graduate students.
! E" C% W2 ~5 u9 F- r
% `* L+ g9 T! T. ?; c5 oNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
3 P t% g# K% B# Y) Q3 bincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
) U4 C% }! w# O, x: i220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students . r8 h- L9 B6 _+ A. l% T- Q0 L
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
+ G1 `( p- E0 S @3 ~9 tleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 7 z8 J( Q, e) }( f3 X7 Y6 t
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 4 Q, X; b, a/ k/ ]; R# g
increases once they are here.& h, I- _0 ^' J
& Y1 w6 ^; V; uThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 8 I* e* U( K; M/ U* a' T
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
- t4 e/ k1 o% a" G4 v* \* ewould like to say thank you to all of the international students that + { T3 v$ m' M
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
" L+ l a4 w. x, U }) M q6 E yincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your " x5 {& k* {% X( S M' c
