: Q4 D3 M, P# W, N6 B WGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 9 p9 ]8 S/ V$ U2 }( ~! \

) i/ Y* c1 l6 O9 b- N" \3 w, H, B. BYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 6 W( j% ^+ s" a. {5 d$ b
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 7 E- B; X/ W! B% x5 Q
news to report from that meeting.
* W' F" C: P+ U" X1 T/ Q2 l& X
$ a9 g$ C) r) }First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 6 ]. b! m' y+ ]) U8 D1 H3 R2 r
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 9 l! p: r0 ]8 j2 I/ D
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international % n! p7 |' M: h
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
" G% V, ~. T& t! ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
* m. b5 k) n1 X9 yAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase & R9 \) \/ _5 {- g v; l( L9 ~
the differential for international graduate students.
# W) T" [; H9 E8 t q5 ]5 E- |, V
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
( g0 G3 K6 R- Vincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to . {0 s' P- ~/ l$ k, l9 H R3 B
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
" N- {3 \* d a! u; Wwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At . M4 W9 C" x: c$ D# K5 t8 @
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
, c; {3 `) }9 n/ ltuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected . c% s* A L9 q+ u3 a3 K
increases once they are here.

6 I8 J3 x. y! T* V0 j1 f& X( qThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
1 F- j5 i; o- x* kinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 7 D7 H7 H" X# Z1 f* V+ H
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
, v& }, ^5 g* T, D% h8 \3 yhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this J) A$ j/ l( {8 ]. l% m* }# Z
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ! j) N- S8 f& u. N
