Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. , T2 u. w0 ^$ {) X2 J: d8 {

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ! L# `9 c( V B! W* _" ~
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad $ V c2 A/ F* r p Y7 M
news to report from that meeting.
9 R! ]2 D2 Q; \, T; t9 s' `1 [( `) ?. o4 C6 w b9 a. Q7 @' D6 N" l
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ( z8 j/ J4 \1 p: U1 L; K c
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
# V; N/ r0 f7 f. m/ ydifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international * `) Y/ U0 M/ Q i4 v* r- [
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 3 W. V7 o6 c8 W
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 4 y p" Y, T( f6 D! o
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 o( E# j! D5 G+ G1 m5 vthe differential for international graduate students.
' n4 y" H9 l+ {' P
# c0 F& p4 @' N4 x3 v A l* a( NNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
1 i& U M4 T4 v( O4 ?increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to : D; y3 J* z% i& Q
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
# Z0 b \) i+ [will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
: s; u( p2 s) a- t+ y" O8 v, Gleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
/ e" S; O9 M6 i @tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected $ W( D3 _5 w3 s0 Q% O. @1 L- z
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the # {7 z) C9 J. w/ l* {+ n9 |
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
! [) O. T' }( [0 ywould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 6 ~9 @/ x; H0 `+ p0 x
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
; @1 p5 e! b9 M# Z0 P4 w# Rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your . a5 B6 N4 T: R$ b
help. Thank you.
