) z& `8 }) x/ y4 @- rGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
% W1 i* p. R6 ZCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad $ v" N) r% N$ Q" ?
news to report from that meeting.) H% E3 k/ x& @! t) f

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ! Y& P( r4 D$ X5 J0 R/ m% C) n. s
undergraduate international students from the increase to the ! f, E# I, i6 W
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international $ U- h. Y6 G5 j+ M% w
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
7 m# x4 ]6 a7 @) b ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 s# G! r6 p& R
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase . u$ J6 x( \2 P9 O# H+ y
the differential for international graduate students.$ H% x& _1 F2 `' J) G
4 S6 ]/ U% X$ @% Q( e, }! ~' P
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 2 @6 N, {0 @: p9 I) O8 D
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 8 g7 q: x4 g. p8 v9 j0 @8 i
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students & `1 S" K/ J* R
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
0 G" u' M! }7 z- }3 Pleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
% ^: W9 s" N- S; C2 htuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
3 x2 O _# S/ N2 @# @% `increases once they are here.% y& m0 {1 e2 R& C0 w& a
- C2 l m m5 [/ t. EThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
" n9 m4 `( U# N Rinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 2 S: a D. \+ A
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
$ v9 I9 B1 D0 p; Q' k6 V- G! whave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this # P( |) @& ^4 n# `0 v; W' y" ^
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
; t4 C( E" M/ C4 jhelp. Thank you.
