Dear International Undergraduate Students,

& ?7 y0 O/ V! gYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
+ A/ M" _" i7 b Q6 wCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 h* X$ a/ l3 x9 Bnews to report from that meeting.3 O' J% |' A9 f
, t8 g) @9 B9 `1 E+ fFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current * U) u) j0 }8 e
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
. ]8 q% l" K, s% l3 m% K }. ldifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 6 c B# \ r4 ^6 E' L* ~* [0 R6 N
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 5 K6 K2 j V7 S# Y: V$ V
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 3 b X( w) E2 w5 E
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase R$ v: N; f ~. H, g* o2 d
the differential for international graduate students.
% G8 H: n3 ^! T: G, M) F. i, [- f! ^( Z( w. _2 V
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an + y) @( L: C/ p' F5 g' r
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
- D7 O3 g* }* s. g220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students % x/ U. _9 [; } `, m) E4 E) l0 S
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
' C4 s$ [2 T& D% e* E# hleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ) g: E) U! t5 u5 }
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected + v9 r; X5 l: D/ A! Y
increases once they are here.. u! _, Z) A2 Y
8 e" ?4 E8 f4 w1 R5 uThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ' |. I6 O; ~7 K, i2 f. p6 u
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
