Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
* y- d- X/ l) h5 `, `% P! OCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
% c7 t- A% A; Z$ t6 f% k
7 ~- G: V* F. TFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 r$ F  }9 p: C# H- Qstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 K3 A$ ]7 k% W  l; z' ?/ D* Utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
+ d' s! e' Y% n8 _. V2 _6 uAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
2 `8 G- q$ O$ D& z8 V, a. g7 d) xthe differential for international graduate students.

6 x9 ^$ u5 Y6 F6 y, _6 C1 ^& oNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
: N6 V( ]$ w( e! ?: _2 A' xincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
+ E; {8 |: r3 d. U9 aleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
1 u% r$ z* d$ Q* n0 Uincreases once they are here.

; y0 {8 q! L) nThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
7 Y6 n7 P! `1 `7 t2 zinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
$ l+ \6 F1 h; G* Y8 O2 Aincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
