- {% ~0 K/ N, y! I& U) EGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
7 U! C: V# t, W3 Z0 R; vnews to report from that meeting.
9 i* X2 l' M, J% I0 V% P! L
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
* ^$ e2 z* d. u" Z3 ndifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
2 I) c3 U" S0 s' Q3 Q9 z. R' ^, etuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
  O6 _# i3 y4 ~. |- L- othe differential for international graduate students.
' D" e6 _' G# L  D: S7 b+ Y
1 ?) F: q* A% x9 m, pNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
9 G4 X) X" N6 ]# I# ~' e! N3 [increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
. J+ A5 ]# |( p) F5 H( V$ Fleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" L% Z. |6 I/ Y1 i( [$ C0 t1 i$ Cincreases once they are here.

6 K6 q$ Q8 V; ?9 U! D/ qThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
3 A- Z) ]3 [7 H, Minternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
0 E& b8 W0 P! Mwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
5 Y& U  P- {/ V3 Ehave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
5 j' l2 l. Y4 M2 f9 U! P' o8 e4 }increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
