The VERTO Project
) z2 ~- g# v% |The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will) h' {9 g. y( ~ C) Q3 P
bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
: _+ K, l% y @2 C- {employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
/ Z# s# x+ Y/ B2 [4 W, s L( ~program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that+ n7 c% q" H6 a1 j
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
4 }0 P# W9 {+ y8 |; @' vYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our5 ~2 D* v% Y& e/ Q
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
* K4 K" N- ?7 R2 dconflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the7 O+ X. n! E0 ^2 S
VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
4 ]: ?, X; v% n3 A. _! Mnecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve2 V: h v8 B5 f! V5 ?5 Y
youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose# u) N2 L# _, U1 ?, [
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment) W0 c. B: f; L' B' R
development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
8 ` {- b+ s1 ?. Y" X0 k) q, Nexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
; l$ {% v; P* z! J( Ywellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
' b/ _- A3 k5 [9 g* k6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
/ H7 n5 g# U* [. `9 kThe project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
7 d) a$ ~( @! `. z% j" eYOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
8 o4 a( i9 q4 f) F" _The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of+ R3 w" N8 o/ v' ?. W2 V

" a8 `. z( n* N+ b• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
$ H" Q6 X+ X7 k# z* ccommunity to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
* y0 {; i5 Z6 L) t% k, Q( Q1 \willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities- O. T/ K4 J2 a" R& H, B3 ^
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
) r; h9 |, ~1 A) m0 I( Abeing realistic to each youth participant2 X% U# d+ p/ x h7 ^( I7 R
• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the* b" j6 a: e D- |) ]5 \
youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to

$ o8 |' [, [8 u( R; |# V• Assist youth with employment development including the development of, O) N% c# {4 p0 a
cover letters and resumes etc.
" n3 B* o; A! ^1 X2 I• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work. d( C7 {5 |* Q. t
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
+ S6 u Z/ y* u7 S" h8 _& v/ i; |placements
& M0 V, \% B* x, ]* E7 ~• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
* W5 Y+ \* `- k' q; Dthe process, and supporting the youth where needed
3 N# [4 T! B5 H• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach! }9 y. C( |6 X* ^
is being fulfilled for each youth
! k6 P4 C3 w' z! w2 H. I' W• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are' h! s7 r+ O0 G) m; H2 e9 }
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project
