Measurement program. Her hard work has paid off; in July 2008 she
! }$ b4 q# J- [/ ?1 u, F, \accepted a position in the MacEwan Financial Services department.6 d. n- Y8 |, |. n: o, f1 y$ q0 P
It is an outcome she could never have predicted in 2003 when she) |' X3 s- f& |3 h' t+ t
came to Grant MacEwan as an exchange student from Heze Medical5 k8 }) b0 t F3 {, c- d
College to continue her nursing studies. She came as a top student
8 U4 K1 a. ^: E2 T. land vice-president of her student activities association, but when she
6 h, o0 t _1 l$ ~4 Z6 w) A( ngot here, everything changed. Two years later she found herself struggling,) i! H! k: C# Y W! e- F$ V
barely keeping up with her program and on the verge of commencing
: n' k" r5 M: [1 Xher clinical practicum. “I asked myself, ‘What’s my goal? Do' V6 C% o' Q2 `' S4 V& |: d9 o( |
I want to stay in nursing my whole life?”
: U# x2 S2 H: `. J% u$ _She turned to Katherine Hildebrand at the Student Resource- L$ ?7 d2 ~9 L, h4 w! Z
Centre. “I noticed that Katherine was a good friend to many, and as3 ^- Z2 P9 B) v. f3 D+ ~
an international student I have learned that you have to speak out,
6 k' q0 h/ c( b2 v$ b2 ]/ Dtalk to someone. You cannot be struggling by yourself. Even if you4 M5 u! E' O6 z
find a way forward, it’s going to take you so long. They are going to
5 z1 ?0 T& |1 q9 W9 H8 t+ z& @give you the help that you need.”' M+ X B! P4 X- t6 {, p8 y
“Katherine asked me, ‘What are you interested in?’” I was interested
$ f' ` M+ o! r6 p' m0 x! `in numbers, so I tried a few basic accounting courses, and I did really
8 J( z1 L! Q. A$ W7 T1 awell. I got As, and I was so satisfied. Then Katherine helped me apply" t' i- n" w" k- F
to the program.” That, however, was just the beginning of a long haul.
, m$ ?8 ~' s2 N+ y) O“It was a really, really big challenge. It was a good thing I was in the' ~1 u' r3 G: ~0 R
co-op program. I was able to practice and get paid. It really helped+ ~8 @( R" B6 m! _
out.” Shaoping believes that nothing is impossible. “My favourite
( N$ d8 {) X) X! O8 `feeling is enjoying a small success after working hard on a challenge.”
- Q( s; i% X. KThroughout this period Shaoping relied on a large circle of friends
: c e v8 N* e% z5 p: s; t& Iand staff at Grant MacEwan, and high among them, Katherine.$ K# P8 l% l$ o2 \/ k3 ]4 M
“Katherine is like one of my parents. I trust her and could tell her9 {. E+ O. _7 l8 m
anything from my heart. She always has my best interests in mind.”6 W6 q6 K3 O1 j* y, I
With such support and a new job, she has decided to stay in1 c8 K* z) l/ v U+ F& I3 L, J
Edmonton for now, “I feel Grant MacEwan is my home here.” With
8 j8 j7 m; X4 vdiploma in hand, Shaoping is looking forward to a trip back to China" C+ b& |9 n: S0 W5 { L
in February 2009 for Chinese New Year. |
