FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.

The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.

. f! o3 j0 {6 ~# g5 T- qThe charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.

) c# ~% x- W2 A" kEnvironment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.
