The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.$ s/ m$ u X3 a8 { W4 |

The charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.# d+ A7 w' h, o1 [" Z2 P0 j$ w- @
+ }/ O% Q2 z% P7 U& C; [Environment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.4 H& o1 {8 e7 R# g2 I: y* J

McCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.+ M8 W; Y: m; h+ K( L( X% c& a

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
