Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

7 i% ?. V' V2 u ^% }EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning." m6 t$ `2 A( e# M
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
/ Y2 r/ c8 i. `7 [! F: f) i" M! j! {The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.* ~+ i3 s0 k; _9 s8 r/ `
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
4 T: Y/ \ @, Z3 F8 O8 q7 T4 ?"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. . M! [7 \" h/ o
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
2 a4 a3 z: a+ ? D1 ]: l0 k% @This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
