Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.' ^9 W8 M5 P$ v# f9 U
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.1 ~+ K, E) K$ p8 ^4 }: W
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.
' a0 u; X1 y6 ~5 r) EMandel said he was surprised by the increase.
w- f+ B& `9 e& N"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
" l. C1 u- P2 o* B5 n$ qEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
: L! r/ X+ ^* W. gThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
