Edmonton's population grows by 30,0005 h( g9 g* q4 L" {- l7 G

! m) [* q# f( i# }, v5 Q& L+ T: Q# hEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
, K, `% A# N2 O' W, }3 m: q' C"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
0 z4 H9 R2 ^1 h9 \( mThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.$ r) y' o7 ?. T9 O- ?. `) h' I6 S# O! G
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
- w) C% k- n! G& i; ^3 @! y"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
# f. E9 x! h* \ C2 P& E/ lEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.5 C7 j5 \( A. @, K
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
