Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

8 \3 B& d( k/ u- R0 m2 Y! T6 a- uEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
( \7 [% J) I8 W ]"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
+ H- l8 |: ~- i$ RThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

$ `" } I3 c, B; n% t"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
! Z$ z7 z: d* |' L/ QEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
5 ~5 A, @7 m+ S4 U$ m$ bThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
