Seven years ago I was asked by a friend if I was "religious and if I believed in God?" As a (formerly) practicing agnostic I quickly answered:"no." However, I defended myself by explaining that I lived my life according to universal principals of "right and wrong" (as I understood them). Because I believed that our deeds create a lasting effect on the world, I felt confident in my everlasting future. In other words, I wasn't worried about there being a heaven or not. I told my friend that when I die, I am banking on knowing that my impact on the world will be ever lasting. My "heaven" will ultimately be the creation of the the sum total of all my actions.

I will never forget my friend's response: he looked at me with glassy eyes, and told me how deeply spiritual I was. I didn't see it. It took five more years to see what he meant. Such was the inspiration of the following poem I wrote.

3 z2 H8 m! }5 ~' I+ a- y: v Heaven5 {- P6 G; f) B% c& ]& u; e$ }- U$ m3 X
The pebble is worn smooth
- U1 |( m5 H" h! Q: \6 O Made small over time
, J' V2 P3 N1 K9 ^* |* \% P3 l; m0 N A product of a cataclysmic force of nature
1 z8 b/ {- x2 m( V" F) R A fragment of mountainous sheets of rock
) S% z3 v- O2 H, { An accidental offspring of a boulder
# C+ p5 g, E% d Z1 X% {9 ~4 L But just a very small stone.
% P7 X& e4 q8 V/ G- p! n6 }# x
/ d F6 \* R, c ] c* K The pebble's place in our world 2 Q% s- y. u$ l2 y- a4 f
Is neither understood nor appreciated
2 v2 D4 c( z( g6 Q But when thrown into a glassy calm pond
8 O% K* |- ?8 u( e/ k6 d6 V1 M/ E Its insignificance is transformed$ I; c& z9 V# D5 h+ z, O; Z7 X
Its meaning and purpose is unleashed.

" D" I/ y9 \; t The instant the pebble kisses the pond
9 b+ ~* U9 f: }% b5 E1 P. y Its signature of concentric ripples % `1 g) n/ D4 L" u, S8 r
Spiral outwards 0 A8 c- e& t% ~, i8 F: S( f
Moving far beyond itself., u4 }" Y0 v( \6 a
Gently affecting everything in its wake
; V: H" `( T0 j! ~+ C+ o Forever altering the smooth placid surface.
- O- |7 Z e$ a6 I9 c! m7 U
" n0 n+ ]8 y6 a: l8 ] The pebble creates its worth and meaning
`& U% l- G# K By unleashing its unimagined power? " N. W2 N8 |6 a, Q% O; F; R
Into a dueling force of action and reaction; ^3 `9 s+ q o/ z3 S$ V8 d
Creating karmic energy0 S' L1 V" P( B3 M/ o
Producing lasting and fluid impressions.5 Q; `3 `4 I* R1 |
6 f/ N7 t4 R1 }& X3 n# @) ^4 U9 e Aren't we all pebbles?
1 D. u, ~% a5 V: J Feeling small and insignificant, C. w8 M2 t9 h: N* C- {' n; s0 Z
But ultimately recognizing : m- H: I. `6 e2 H; e
That who we are meant to be
( l" Z, U& d: n8 b" j Can never be measured in isolation, V, ?. ?* e6 Y' N! H2 [1 z! q3 w7 g. W
on a path into ourselves.2 r- h6 j; v, u7 h8 f v, `7 p
0 V W( e3 v/ x' A P/ r; t
It is true then:3 t: ?7 j" ?6 n# S% g! H
Our everlasting future & [+ B& t& f3 V) z6 I' T
Is created by the indiscriminate tossing of pebbles0 F2 w1 a8 o+ k' N* Z
Into the pond of life/ h1 n0 y3 q( |3 v5 o2 C; h& {
Creating ripples
2 }2 H; {: F. v+ q4 m that leave unique mark on our world , P2 P6 p0 {% d
Not because of thoughts
4 \3 N4 q m6 x5 T9 {. R- L7 L( H not because of well meaning plans
' K( W# K; L1 |# t But because of actions. % T$ X/ V m! ?& Y
' }* e9 W+ W( z2 r- T- S$ n' A+ O
Our life's prayers our answered% E. E7 L8 w3 W' n. b7 x# U# y2 ]
Because even the smallest pebble 1 z5 V" x* w( V0 K5 G
No matter how seemingly insignificant7 X1 p$ f4 F: z) V
Changes the course of the lives! E$ c2 P. i4 F! \) A
Of those we touch.? 9 \, ?9 h7 E1 U$ n) h" T
$ i$ y$ B5 @8 e! W1 _ And when the icy winds of death$ R+ K G1 Z! h4 Q- A5 p
beckon our lasting attention

because of that one pebble
