Seven years ago I was asked by a friend if I was "religious and if I believed in God?" As a (formerly) practicing agnostic I quickly answered:"no." However, I defended myself by explaining that I lived my life according to universal principals of "right and wrong" (as I understood them). Because I believed that our deeds create a lasting effect on the world, I felt confident in my everlasting future. In other words, I wasn't worried about there being a heaven or not. I told my friend that when I die, I am banking on knowing that my impact on the world will be ever lasting. My "heaven" will ultimately be the creation of the the sum total of all my actions.
& J# Q2 M* A, X5 _/ D
' H$ f% e# I1 [ I will never forget my friend's response: he looked at me with glassy eyes, and told me how deeply spiritual I was. I didn't see it. It took five more years to see what he meant. Such was the inspiration of the following poem I wrote.

; C8 }/ s* U" Y: {* I Heaven
, ` x3 Q9 L8 _/ b The pebble is worn smooth
) z. i% D/ _8 W, r; Y1 q9 L! @ Made small over time# i' y5 N; O: i5 o
A product of a cataclysmic force of nature
6 {; i) o& d8 L' p5 h* w A fragment of mountainous sheets of rock8 i6 F2 S, |! y1 `9 i, K
An accidental offspring of a boulder
# _1 D! c$ c/ O/ M+ w& ] But just a very small stone. - M3 e, L, |5 A
1 O* @( p$ G$ h' }$ r+ X: y1 r
The pebble's place in our world # X2 O/ c: @( h; v! |% b
Is neither understood nor appreciated
$ w% O. T" l2 h& X: \- `- d- E But when thrown into a glassy calm pond 0 \( |2 g {+ x( H
Its insignificance is transformed! z. i1 e8 N8 p* Y' v
Its meaning and purpose is unleashed.
Y* s k% K; n" H$ R- w9 r& q, s4 U
6 x7 R5 e& u, g The instant the pebble kisses the pond U% ~( e! [) f9 ~- Z4 T% `
Its signature of concentric ripples
/ v" r/ |! O i Spiral outwards 2 V+ J$ S! b- D& F
Moving far beyond itself.
! x- J5 T* c1 }6 \ Gently affecting everything in its wake
3 a5 z, J2 t( y; ^6 b& h$ }/ Q Forever altering the smooth placid surface.
4 {2 ~* I/ F, x& i }: j2 M 7 Y: d: R) }7 M. N7 h
The pebble creates its worth and meaning 5 e( ]' o# n4 u) w* b% `
By unleashing its unimagined power? : l- n, m: j P# L5 H. Q
Into a dueling force of action and reaction
! w, ?6 ^. w+ x- c) R3 n) A Creating karmic energy
% b& ~, }+ s) G O/ W+ [ Producing lasting and fluid impressions.$ l! w. `) W$ v
/ b c5 ?3 E' ]* c: r6 W7 Z3 E
Aren't we all pebbles?) W3 q1 X) A P/ l, M
Feeling small and insignificant) j; l6 J9 Q1 G" ?
But ultimately recognizing
3 A6 G$ W' V; h That who we are meant to be# _9 t }/ g$ H2 T2 R; d. g0 c
Can never be measured in isolation
; A- t9 d9 H' D, v3 R; U on a path into ourselves.: e9 T" `9 P; `; z1 p& w; }% o
; j9 V5 K- M0 u It is true then:+ |5 }0 M k$ O, f% W
Our everlasting future & V, W' k* T; p" F
Is created by the indiscriminate tossing of pebbles1 y- l3 j8 h, U+ N" ?
Into the pond of life7 _# [$ e3 s# H. n' C
Creating ripples |( P" X! _$ @7 P
that leave unique mark on our world
) D0 y- W+ _3 }" T8 ^ Not because of thoughts
3 C5 @3 k2 f" h+ G" l not because of well meaning plans
+ G/ g. ^4 g' j8 a But because of actions.
- S# y5 N( ]/ b& A
' Z8 o- N5 L) w! J( L Our life's prayers our answered
/ h) Q* }& A5 c3 m' [ Because even the smallest pebble # j" x/ [/ s) R' r+ M% e6 e4 N
No matter how seemingly insignificant0 i3 D! R/ T+ A) d7 O
Changes the course of the lives5 N- l( Q; F, ?. Q6 f$ T. A
Of those we touch.? + `; ]( a2 K, I) Z9 r
5 b% ]- {. x+ B And when the icy winds of death7 @# L2 l2 y( Y. F" _3 B/ s# F
beckon our lasting attention
) g% U; U5 x/ ?9 `% ~1 d8 j* | We will gently leave this life ! M) L# K% e0 |- k* C/ v
With the knowledge that
^1 b$ M# y, f+ n% w' \( n because of that one pebble
$ q' ]8 b) M8 J+ X; b s# E* Y The world will never be the same.* U I! h: i, K! P3 Y* F3 }, C

And then we have heaven …
