While in the legislature he served as Senate Majority Leader. During these
years, Jim West supported several anti-gay bills, including one that would

under the age of 18 (the bill failed). He would later admit that he

West was involved in a sex scandal in 2005. He was accused of sexually

to lure teenage boys for sexual relationships. West called the molestation

6 o% E* @$ r2 ~1 MWest confirmed the accusations of meeting men over the Internet but denied
the charges that he had sought out minors (see[4]). Using the name "Right-
3 K4 T: K  n" {BiGuy" he allegedly offered internships to young gay men (some of whom were
0 J$ U4 j5 F* e4 W3 T2 ejust graduating from high school - none of whom, however, under the age of
18.

November 2006.

9 L- |- |! G/ cIn November 2006, he resigned or was removed from all of his leadership
9 B5 s8 t8 p2 M+ Q# w7 k8 j3 Lpositions after he admitted soliciting prostitute Mike Jones for homosexual
sex and methamphetamine. Initially Haggard denied even knowing Mike Jones,
but as a media investigation proceeded he acknowledged that some allegations
% U8 E% B" g2 u, such as his purchase of methamphetamine, were true. He later added "sexual
immorality" to his list of confessions.[2]

4 U3 e8 ]9 D6 Y% QAfter the scandal was publicized, Haggard entered three weeks of intensive
counseling, overseen by four ministers. In February 2007, one of those
ministers, Tim Ralph, said that Haggard "is completely heterosexual."[3]
0 V) I7 L, M  SRalph later said he meant that therapy "gave Ted the tools to help to
embrace his heterosexual side."[4] As of early 2009, Haggard continues to
1 q  o/ I5 b" }+ c6 h2 A5 n* n! lreceive counseling, and now he says that he is a “heterosexual with issues.

young male church member had come forward in 2006 and that there was an "
overwhelming pool of evidence [of an] inappropriate, consensual sexual
relationship [that] went on for a long period of time [with Haggard] ... it
+ |% t6 I" H* C; J- t. J: Qwasn't a one-time act."[76] Haggard's successor, Brady Boyd, said the church
reached a six figure settlement with the man, who was in his early 20s at
! d  u% `  K7 r3 g) othe time.[78] According to the man, he said the contact was "not consensual"
