Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has said radiation levels near the damaged Fukushima No 1 nuclear power plant are declining following water-dousing measures taken to cool down the reactor's overheated spent fuel storage pool.
& `% O# G5 g% K0 O' @+ f% a/ x/ u- p$ z: X9 B3 `
According to measurements taken by the agency around 1.1 km west of the plant's No 2 reactor, hourly radiation levels stood at 279.4 microsievert at 5 am on Friday, down from 309 and 292 microsievert around the time when the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) had shot water into the reactor.

* U- M7 D; Y+ n+ BEngineers have succeeded in connecting a power line to reactor 2, which will hopefully enable them to restore electricity to the cooling pumps needed to prevent a meltdown.1 U, u0 x% r/ h* O P6 R

Agency officials have said they are working to restore electricity in reactor No.1, and by Sunday in reactor No 3 and No 4, Xinhua reports.. s1 k1 P% t% l" M: l

On Thursday, two SDF CH-47 helicopters had dumped water in the damaged No 3 reactor, followed by five fire and rescue trucks equipped with high-pressure water canons shooting around 30 tons of water at the reactor later in the day.+ t3 n- a$ c; A2 X) s+ v. Y: f1 h
: S+ L+ X ]/ `5 f* x, QJapan is going through a major crisis after being hit by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake and tsunami last Friday, which damaged cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant causing explosions in some of the reactors and radiation leakage in and around the plant, raising the possibility of a major catastrophe.
