that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet

, X) M+ ^. ~4 W- [7 ` K4 r$ e. v- TOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
) n6 \4 f4 h) San increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving& m2 U a' F# W9 e+ t Z l- w
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops( F f8 i/ d+ |% o9 E! ]1 \+ g
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look1 [9 _. U& }0 P6 s! H/ B
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be( G/ U) b+ h. k( v
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
) c; k1 }: D0 z$ S h" Binvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
0 B5 t. u1 ^2 Z. @) Emarket forces to prevail.

- i n+ g7 A& x# G+ EThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
. a: u r% S0 n4 A( S! b1 Hchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large3 T* t" S+ h ~ z
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages3 V. {+ G) o! q9 r
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that0 ]! H: E# _- E" I
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
