Alberta Government Donates $5 million to Red Cross Relief Efforts in Japan.. N9 u9 m/ y1 U' E& \% O2 u
5 A) w4 [$ ~+ J2 V' [ Y, O. B(Alberta) April 15, 2011: The Alberta Government announced today that it will donate $5 million to the Canadian Red Cross to support earthquake and tsunami relief efforts following the March 11, 2011 disaster in Japan.& g3 ]6 `4 [1 ~- D& l, _

“Canadian Red Cross is humbled and honoured that the Government of Alberta and Albertans in general continue to show their trust in how we ensure that the most vulnerable people in need receive the help they require during times of disaster,” said Canadian Red Cross Alberta Director Steve Armstrong. “This incredibly generous donation will help to ensure that the Canadian Red Cross, working with our sister society the Japanese Red Cross, can continue to provide aid.”+ N) Y8 Y% D3 S& @/ ^

$ g1 }2 A+ H! L4 @0 M ?5 QOn March 11, an earthquake measuring 8.9 in magnitude struck off the northeast shore of Japan, touching off a massive tsunami. Numerous aftershocks have rippled through the country in the days since the initial earthquake. : H: Y: i# e' [ j& t3 ~
5 V( T2 ]2 V: b% u$ B3 q8 I" iThe Red Cross teams continue to work around the clock to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. As part of the Red Cross relief operation, more than 192,000 blankets, 183,000 pieces of clothing, 26,000 emergency relief kits and 11,000 sleeping kits have been handed out to evacuees. In the coming weeks efforts will shift from emergency response to early recovery, these activities will include livelihoods support and the provision of 70,000 transitional homes benefitting 280,000 people.& g& [) M0 C, X, A
