When you chose fund, you have to consider:/ V' ]* z8 M% _) M. W
1. Cost. Management Fee & Operation Expense (MER), Sale Transaction & Commision Fee, etc. The higher you pay, the less you get. So you should go with fund with low MER, and No load (No sale charge for each buy and sale). Normally only big bank offer No load fund, and TD Bank and RBC Bank are in the top list of good performance. : i& e5 ~% t2 S- k
2.Your risk and how many year you will invest. If you only invest for short term and has low risk tolerate, chose Money Market and Bond fund, but personally I recommond High Rate Saving Accound like ING(3.0%), ICICI(3.5%), zero risk. If you invest for mid term(2-5 year), chose a balance fund(60% income, 40% equity); If more than 5 year, personal I think 10 years is more suitable, chose portfolio mixed with 40%- income and 60%+ equity( diversafied them between Canada and Overseas),how many % depend on your own risk.. 3.How many you invest. people like me live paycheque by paycheque, can only contribute a few hundred each month. Best way is chose a big bank like TD and pre-authorize each month. So No Load is important. You will not be charge sales and transaction fee each time you buy. If some one happen have big money and want to pay once a year, I recommend Phillips, Hager & North (PH&N --- it is one company, not three) and you can check through it's website. PH&N charge very low MER and have plenty choices, but seems you need $25,000 for keeping a total account and each fund no less than $5000.

If you like paying less and do not like chose stock by yourself, ETF or Index fund are good choices. Big money and trade in stock market, go ETF; small money and trade as fund, Index fund or Index e Fund.3 S. P) u/ g& R
5. Whatever you chose, fund or stock, beware the risk. Do not go there if you can not sleep when the market fall down. You will lose money if you buy high and sell low.
