A coalition of Alberta business groups is calling on the federal and provincial governments to work with industry to address labour shortages in western Canada.' b: g. K) [0 L3 j: Y

"Every sector of the economy will be hit hard by a shortage of workers," said coalition spokesperson Richard Truscott, Alberta director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses.

' D; z9 C- N5 p8 t: l; U“Governments and industry must work together quickly to explore opportunities to improve temporary worker and permanent immigration programs to meet the needs of a growing economy."% v9 b( J. J: k2 p) h, {

The Alberta government is forecasting there will be 114,000 more jobs than people to fill them in coming years, he said.# k( g* I$ }( l' C, f/ s; c3 k/ a

This shortage of labour will slow economic growth, costing jobs and reducing government revenue, said business groups.3 [3 R) C: Q, E; L
! r8 H: K% `2 l! T- ~% J
The coalition is asking government to:( u& v/ M2 r( p7 R, Q9 f/ E* J' `
- m9 ^1 o, L0 k$ g& M9 @2 l. }Change the Federal Skilled Worker Program to place greater emphasis on labour demands.
: y: Z: y; y$ o& K7 n7 P6 H1 oMake it easier for temporary workers to become permanent immigrants.
. Y: C0 L% o# a' i4 L0 A3 sChange National Occupation Codes to reflect employer needs and recognize a broader range of skilled positions.
* J0 O& i; \4 V6 P9 jStreamline the Temporary Foreign Worker application and approval process.
: t: A6 a, D$ Y# F6 ~“What’s needed now is the recognition that we must aggressively recruit in international labour markets," said Tim Shipton, President of the Alberta Enterprise Group., T5 U5 l& a' N' @+ s

"We need to recognize that we are competing not just with the United States, not just with western Canada, we are competing globally for a small pool of skilled workers out there so we need the system to become much more responsive and streamlined to the needs of the economy, he said.& } M% n0 a7 {- ~5 u7 i
7 W/ j* X7 C7 @; R$ OThe Alberta government agrees the cap on immigrant workers allowed to come to the province needs to be much higher, said Shipton.
! O0 g3 _0 h. z- h& f4 I( L* A+ K2 J1 a$ F
Currently the federal government has set the cap at 5,000 workers, while Alberta wants the number raised to 10,000.

. G/ K7 F) f) a' i"We will be more successful in this effort if the federal and provincial governments make the necessary changes to help employers gain access to the human resources we need,” Shipton said.
