The Alberta government is forecasting there will be 114,000 more jobs than people to fill them in coming years, he said.

The coalition is asking government to:

: h2 j3 v0 U0 L% \- C1 EChange the Federal Skilled Worker Program to place greater emphasis on labour demands.( f3 x8 N" @- t2 e0 s% v
Make it easier for temporary workers to become permanent immigrants.2 t- F$ l+ S( ~+ I; O9 O+ ^
Change National Occupation Codes to reflect employer needs and recognize a broader range of skilled positions.7 G: h1 m0 g7 V
Streamline the Temporary Foreign Worker application and approval process.
. ~8 n" c& E5 A# Q) v( N8 Z“What’s needed now is the recognition that we must aggressively recruit in international labour markets," said Tim Shipton, President of the Alberta Enterprise Group.) d8 s" g6 [% K

"We need to recognize that we are competing not just with the United States, not just with western Canada, we are competing globally for a small pool of skilled workers out there so we need the system to become much more responsive and streamlined to the needs of the economy, he said.

& @- _6 B# I2 nThe Alberta government agrees the cap on immigrant workers allowed to come to the province needs to be much higher, said Shipton.3 b9 x% A( }4 M2 Y P0 U7 N8 i
, d9 q; k) c1 H9 R3 b5 FCurrently the federal government has set the cap at 5,000 workers, while Alberta wants the number raised to 10,000.4 h3 H6 K& e/ G f) e, P0 i- F3 S

"We will be more successful in this effort if the federal and provincial governments make the necessary changes to help employers gain access to the human resources we need,” Shipton said.
