"Every sector of the economy will be hit hard by a shortage of workers," said coalition spokesperson Richard Truscott, Alberta director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses.

/ j+ \: V1 M8 F“Governments and industry must work together quickly to explore opportunities to improve temporary worker and permanent immigration programs to meet the needs of a growing economy."5 m3 o1 y/ z2 W/ |$ I* L% P0 P

The Alberta government is forecasting there will be 114,000 more jobs than people to fill them in coming years, he said.( ?1 i3 F: x! F8 H% D- \
6 Z3 M1 Z$ K3 s- O- V+ BThis shortage of labour will slow economic growth, costing jobs and reducing government revenue, said business groups.

" H5 Z- o: x! U0 LChange the Federal Skilled Worker Program to place greater emphasis on labour demands.
; o+ A# O) @3 a) U. M# p. U+ \Make it easier for temporary workers to become permanent immigrants.3 m1 }- T& Q8 q% G8 y5 |1 b
Change National Occupation Codes to reflect employer needs and recognize a broader range of skilled positions.2 A' |' t0 {3 F7 v5 B$ y
Streamline the Temporary Foreign Worker application and approval process.3 Q+ N1 O2 u# b4 O8 X) {
“What’s needed now is the recognition that we must aggressively recruit in international labour markets," said Tim Shipton, President of the Alberta Enterprise Group.! ~. o( @( j7 Y9 I. \7 Q! b

"We need to recognize that we are competing not just with the United States, not just with western Canada, we are competing globally for a small pool of skilled workers out there so we need the system to become much more responsive and streamlined to the needs of the economy, he said.( h1 y& I" B9 w; c( N5 P; k
) G# Z4 q' j. G* J+ p5 pThe Alberta government agrees the cap on immigrant workers allowed to come to the province needs to be much higher, said Shipton.; z% l5 v5 w3 ?( X2 c+ i
, ~' o% r4 R9 `" PCurrently the federal government has set the cap at 5,000 workers, while Alberta wants the number raised to 10,000.( g* a% r- @+ s- B5 ]

"We will be more successful in this effort if the federal and provincial governments make the necessary changes to help employers gain access to the human resources we need,” Shipton said.
