You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,' @) L  n' J2 p% a9 N' G$ J
# \3 w# V: c. a5 f8 E- y+ I& F/ M, I
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.9 K1 q, h% a% D2 a- F* m$ ]  Z
; x2 j5 V/ e# d% k8 M: v
His name was Kyle.+ w" b# J6 {, o9 H. i

" @6 j; P2 |$ @% r# C( Z, XIt looked like he was carrying all of his1 s5 H" T0 T3 g3 }: f! i
Books.% ?' W( m: L6 V8 a- M
2 Q1 h! N0 {) @; g
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?' W8 `+ b7 X( U1 r( r
% z: _( H' h* I3 d* z$ {+ s
He must really be a nerd."( B) {4 }8 A9 s, G

- W& ]7 Y1 v+ g8 ]+ n, K3 Q+ |I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
! X( H& N* ?' X$ n9 u- g# P
! k# B- r1 q8 i# e# @2 g7 sAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
7 }7 `4 A9 T# ]# x( h! f  A/ l* z& I2 v
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.( p. j2 u8 _2 l% T+ @8 [" B
) X4 O+ |- V% v) p' d
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.6 j; O. {" K/ \8 X
& l  C. {5 M' }' x5 g5 `
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
' r  t8 _; ~7 i1 c5 W8 _% y
1 n- c/ R6 X/ q! BMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.0 Q) ^4 b  `$ p
' P8 g  \5 v. b+ H1 h# m, f4 h3 g
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.( a( L7 Q# }, h. A
0 P, H6 T. N# l; a( W6 j
They really should get lives.
/ p7 n* ]1 P+ Q6 I) A+ I- I% m- ^* d3 }
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"" I+ l5 X- d+ x6 d2 F+ o

- F0 L" C- \* e6 P. z; M, R  gThere was a big smile on his face.+ `' o1 |4 p- ^" I4 g

" x# u5 B. G$ F: jIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
4 R# B  q0 \; m4 L( N! S7 w9 S9 W
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
% S9 {6 a2 g. \* P2 M1 t
8 r/ c- j7 C4 G5 u6 E" r' k) v. wAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
) |: v& U2 n. c- i" a1 v; X9 j- v
He said he had gone to private school before now.
' ^8 \. j3 ^7 Q9 Q6 t! ^8 V$ `/ P' `" b) V3 O- h
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
; U9 I1 \7 N1 k
4 K4 u9 V1 B* M2 n; R( G6 z, sWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
4 ~. E  |" W$ g3 }6 U, S( L
: J- B2 G0 W0 w7 u' l2 AHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
: X1 M4 [' j( }
, F- n$ _# U$ d* L4 ?I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
4 K( I8 v0 N/ R+ B% A9 m& p+ Y# K: q$ f( v: z& P4 _9 a
He said yes.
3 S7 c) Y2 Y9 ~4 W0 t7 x" i: l+ b& m! X: M" q
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
; A. p* ^0 V' L; }/ U5 D3 d2 E) P
$ W- c" g+ G9 j+ E3 f9 \9 PMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
/ W& a- A, [1 N3 s, ^, M, k; n+ B$ `3 Y. R- e
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!, K- G2 D7 M0 R

- I$ v7 Z7 `; u" x" He just laughed and handed me half the books.. S3 X+ l  M) V& b" o
& h! `' N; m. Y5 a& ?) d
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
6 ?+ e0 _5 H$ C% B; D4 v+ e
% M+ k4 ?9 M8 N# `, I# J5 vWhen we were seniors, we began to think
. ~# @- p% K6 s( l8 I( lAbout college.
/ J1 ]. l! T3 w% }$ F- g
4 {. r& _6 `' }* {, Y. iKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
4 q0 b' d# [) r5 [; a$ ~, `Was going to Duke.
2 o- N( w6 G3 s7 Q5 M. U3 a* `3 t9 @6 S: A8 l  _  {& a0 ~
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
+ ~6 v2 P9 p+ m/ r
; U( Y% I' |2 CHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.. K- ~' ]) p* C

" W  `. E9 U) r- Y" b/ C% SKyle was valedictorian of our class.
/ d9 T7 _# z9 j( H  j  ^. N& \! e+ h; p' s0 J
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.) v# t& i! r0 r. d& ?

( J, s+ b- G  V8 Q8 t6 PHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.1 R3 R% c: s, z7 `8 B3 m. h% M
; U- G5 N% I9 `! m+ q4 ^8 `% g
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak0 _4 {3 l2 X' u

" ~. a, r0 m6 v" bGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
0 y" P; c6 j/ |- M3 ]. i9 ^8 F+ s$ r/ @
He looked great.
# I+ d  F6 e9 Z. s# q
* |8 N6 j8 o/ {: s. AHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school./ z. ]6 X) x8 T1 w% u
0 r! Y* n0 ~) Z6 G
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
5 F, A* K3 P& y: d6 M5 I" G9 K: M1 o3 k& P0 m& o
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.# c$ j+ C) Z# W5 T; |" D& _
9 _$ m9 e& {. _0 H- M; n
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
( I- x; w8 _% G9 ~$ e9 m- I1 @# P$ p
Today was one of those days.
& i/ C+ j; @; W. q$ U. E% s' X, t& F" q  F, ]9 D5 H
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
8 y% K# s: q. ~" O! k' t6 H; t( \! c& u
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
3 s5 n: d6 ?+ y# n- w0 }3 ?- [9 c# ]5 V4 N6 u9 `
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
6 r# X% o/ Q( o4 @* F
. q% Z4 \# r' E4 \7 b+ C) U"Thanks," he said.# `, v3 y$ F' J0 ?& @
2 n* n- y7 j/ \6 k9 y. D+ z7 d
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
% F! I7 `9 B$ [3 _  k# J% ^: h2 I' i" S
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.( I3 i) ^6 k8 @
. A5 D' Z% [: _
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
$ d4 a; L; ~% U) }5 H& P; D- E- \6 x& }
I am here to tell all of you that being a  |+ g5 N" q, v+ R) t
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.* p9 J& _: Z" P

- ]& A  t- P& i" QI am going to tell you a story."
' Q. H0 q1 |2 J6 z
) Z, c% G' T+ T  x" x* c9 N) II just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
' s6 E- X8 w+ Z$ Y# J* f7 s' E( V$ \" m
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.% X/ [8 ~9 r/ m+ b9 {: J+ J
5 m  o0 Z/ o( B6 a6 D) r8 }1 y
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
! h! K' c! C5 S( r5 z0 @5 g( P2 B3 S; h; B
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.$ j9 V# s5 Y5 S  \) }

) m" p2 ]. y3 V8 ~6 y' {"Thankfully, I was saved.) S0 }; c& ?. v! F
0 W8 v1 \  |9 P& o1 v. a/ s) `8 \
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."* g) ]5 G5 g, t2 w

0 |* q9 ^2 W( c! wI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.8 Q! k  j) e; A: d1 }
2 ?, T* Y% l( g( v9 p* |7 ^; W% Y$ l7 M
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
) s8 `1 }" c9 F# K
& R: C0 o- M6 s8 fNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.( ^1 o* T  z! G4 n

( a' ^8 m( D6 A* L7 q" K' {Never underestimate the power of your actions.& u' o; j& l1 ^! V+ E

9 E! @- O) H7 y5 }4 T) ?With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
' N3 M+ i' \" E2 c- W% p
- l5 k: x; m1 a! [5 E1 }  d7 ZFor better or for worse.* j) A# M6 ]1 Y0 a" W  E) n  }
/ \* ~3 j: n7 u( i7 m% E5 k/ c
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
. i# [% J8 }7 T7 {
+ l  b* D2 R+ A  z; `9 }' h$ ZLook for God in others.
& r# L# E. E1 R( ?+ U
! l. v1 Y8 l. l! k! u9 wYou now have two choices, you can:
. w9 l8 s$ G6 _% D+ Q3 p' b
5 n$ r  \3 g* `6 K, }+ y1) Pass this on to your friends or
! p9 D+ H; G5 L4 j/ J
( T; T$ b7 d# |" t; _2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.4 `; A2 |) W! a1 n& U9 |* r
8 _+ ~# M3 q* f8 w% `
As you can see, I took choice number 1.4 V$ h( w6 [2 z! k3 z! T
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history." v' z$ C* i* `& {6 B

Tomorrow is mystery.6 g8 d# @5 I0 }3 W0 e& I7 K
, l- T4 }0 z* b, R/ I! h6 [
Today is a gift.2 t) z( C5 |" i! H! U
