You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,: v2 b1 z& D: w- s" G

5 b6 g* C6 ?5 I0 N5 X5 w; ^7 QI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.$ W+ v4 {" z! q3 E- L% T. e

" U( O6 D5 [, L$ z$ qHis name was Kyle.8 b4 {! E7 y5 @7 n

0 G$ M5 d+ F  ?9 _2 H  g% n( M5 JIt looked like he was carrying all of his
( b& t* K1 ~' f6 \% y( WBooks.
1 ]  i' G7 w- s* j1 I
" W9 I. h1 }/ o% m% iI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
& Y( L2 Q2 n  O  l# b: A+ v6 N! I; G: L* ]8 I
He must really be a nerd."
. J5 k& O7 ?9 v4 d, B( G. s- ^% F5 k% z3 ?4 ?5 f0 i
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.! `: }/ m$ V; T9 ^- G  y

. w& @. b1 u1 VAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
9 p1 X3 n3 {0 a& o
$ f) c( M' F: N0 E$ d* o) dThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.8 L5 E$ [; V+ {
5 {, y, O9 @* ~% u" u* \* F( X5 h
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.* x; Q9 d- Q+ G6 }1 g6 g

1 Y9 H; J) F' r# yHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes) S* e# F/ Y: @7 s0 b

- ?( `" b1 j& w1 pMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.) V( |; A+ z- n

; T) ^7 v: I6 J( vAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.( x( N! X: E' J; c1 _! Q! h
: g4 ^3 l( F# O4 _5 c! @( M
They really should get lives.+ o: u5 K7 `3 N, {' e( ]* }5 O5 P

7 ], i" j5 I2 W" f" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"2 A  z/ y; o8 [2 o7 H
) }% b2 [( g: ^8 ]( R+ |4 N" b
There was a big smile on his face.( V, e& l3 T4 u+ j3 u$ [
0 A- y1 J$ f# {8 V- f
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
' E4 U1 I+ `: a) D! v9 O& g9 o# F1 Q
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.) M* r' ]7 k% k( y0 y, y" r

0 Y. w1 _( n) V/ t0 _As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.. h6 r: ]1 g6 m4 J8 F

/ O" L7 w% R7 AHe said he had gone to private school before now.# n6 t/ k4 `2 L

" X2 ?* t' V$ r+ A& Z# m: xI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.3 h# h6 B% s+ H
& n# `, n/ r; H0 E+ Z, X
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.+ ?! Z% w/ P# z; Y1 O

# k9 z) ^1 b- q* \4 RHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
9 k8 j$ e% c# G4 D6 F% \/ y1 z8 o2 q
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.) T: j7 R( u2 B
; Z% v% b7 n' l* [) `, Q/ i
He said yes.- y; h$ r" b' C: t5 l9 H, ?
8 [& z1 K3 t; }6 }3 d/ {& |
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.4 N- j% Z" y4 u4 t5 @

+ B) I2 x% y# R% y; G% Y8 R4 ZMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
4 B: O% S1 N) D4 ]% O6 E4 y
3 G: S# L: m8 \1 \I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
/ g8 A" ?1 v, P! K5 {; A0 q( o* n( V+ D4 ?7 Z: s9 e$ K6 r' ^
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
! h$ I9 n2 N  H4 W* \: z
3 P9 [4 S0 ]- G2 E$ NOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.- M& F  l6 A2 {
2 e& z3 m- O  D. z
When we were seniors, we began to think+ ]3 _' M1 B; A( s/ j( Q, N! {
About college.
* f6 p/ u5 D/ V! L8 W: M2 Y* w& H. C! n+ U& Q( S# e1 |9 `( d
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
$ n' y0 |0 P6 l; C/ j( bWas going to Duke.! B$ t) B: M& P1 O
  r! y/ w# S+ Y/ {& z9 A2 s, q9 z
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
1 J2 W  v5 U" P8 t1 m9 `. k) W
5 J- x# V. D& y: @' JHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
* A. l/ [- S3 Y& H. x1 J* S& V  l4 s3 z* U% u* v4 u/ P
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.  D" f+ E! K, r8 E1 s

4 G, b3 D  [! ?8 s3 U, J3 JI teased him all the time about being a nerd.  O5 t% A# n& h. u, |7 `  u0 [- k4 G: p

0 M( |9 R: j7 Z, h  e' I. s" {He had to prepare a speech for graduation.8 r" I6 H) c, U9 z' `4 c6 b& ]

/ t" Q" _6 ]$ GI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak& R; |: Q5 A1 y
' }2 i3 [. c- P& w, b/ f
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
! r9 @# P8 k' z3 v9 J3 a- |5 M% ~( j, G
He looked great./ s/ V8 _8 {/ d* |
) X* ]9 J9 {" ~7 D" q; r- q
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.) J* R1 k$ P) s" c" J
5 k  b9 E* W2 K2 n7 c% l, V
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
( z3 Z. G* d6 ?& M1 ]9 ?, h
/ _: H/ p" m+ _* U0 K. RHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.7 s' K! T/ h2 N" ~( [5 Z" X

0 y# C$ t8 O- x+ ~Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
7 f2 p7 z5 N: d, I8 t; s6 I/ I; s* w
Today was one of those days.
8 f* R! h' b5 `  M% P5 h$ ~& U; V0 x# C5 |6 m) x3 @
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.9 d7 B) Z5 @) z1 R3 P/ C  L
8 f$ C8 G- t9 l9 d) k% b8 h
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
$ f# K7 }, a( W; M9 g" Y9 C6 ?
: K" a+ Z. a4 Q. ~+ J4 O4 EHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.5 l* c% t% \0 g* b! [% \+ M$ D

# E: I, d8 g  {: \9 ]4 ~"Thanks," he said.

: c6 ?$ D" C/ C9 sAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began7 ^8 G8 h3 p3 F5 k8 Y0 [
8 Y- D+ R9 w2 H7 Q: b' w
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
- O% A3 j% `0 N6 r
" ?/ w2 r, W! f: }6 WYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...' N5 @2 Y$ P" \5 {+ f# Q
) B3 j6 |% e2 C; ~* X* G
I am here to tell all of you that being a
( V# ?" O6 v, t3 [* p$ }: K1 KFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.7 Y; x9 h) [  O+ E. I
' `, F4 J  u) B( H
I am going to tell you a story."
5 b5 c( b  v$ p2 k) M1 l+ D) O7 j* ]0 s# G# s+ j
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.) p4 b' s3 U! |2 j! C
4 g4 J9 c0 n/ B5 y# z+ i
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.( `0 ^" {/ I1 |
. [9 O& s% h) L, _5 a/ h2 D' N# R: D
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.) \* l6 W! D" O) s! H
6 T4 R  `7 t8 A6 w
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.4 d' t5 ?$ Y. q5 |' P! ~" o" H( V  p
* @) T$ d1 R$ U* ^: M" L! O
"Thankfully, I was saved.
# Z4 S0 Q; B$ |2 d; x/ s2 v
) J4 O, P/ Q5 a, r5 f, `# rMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."# q; d1 J3 {% W3 P% y4 ~
9 P9 A2 H3 q8 B% w2 X
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
8 a2 x' P6 S0 f2 G' w' S) q+ n- u6 m% f" `4 G7 C7 z- p
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.1 p7 ?3 C, \& k/ C, L' \  @

2 U, k* u2 i& `$ B/ aNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
2 i/ x: o1 e! Q$ j+ I9 ]* x6 {6 d1 ]9 j; O5 n' H  S5 s, e6 S
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
9 E! c6 O9 M7 g: |' W$ v2 {0 G- B
$ C$ B) N4 v7 ?4 Y* B1 m; u& ~With one small gesture you can change a person's life.0 d; b! b1 g2 }' a8 u9 w2 E
' \( H& v$ k% w
For better or for worse.
' T) e0 \* I$ d+ W7 ?9 }& [* t
/ G; A+ v' ~) _5 y+ V) AGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
# e, u# D6 u1 F! U5 [" F/ F+ K
2 q1 M' J. r+ k6 JLook for God in others.
: S9 L5 Y' i. y- }
. ]0 H) p4 k) t3 s, s, D8 ZYou now have two choices, you can:
& J& ?, F% k1 \( i" d, Y' o% O/ d7 _% w% W3 y# L2 ^4 ]6 V
1) Pass this on to your friends or3 r: {5 R4 b2 d) C4 W3 k0 A
7 Z3 n1 q9 [2 {; l* h, t& l
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
' r9 _& j. D4 q! l: y- X
7 _! l- R1 |# mAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
0 `1 ~" Z2 P6 |5 ]( C7 G"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."" x; z& j/ b; d! h3 U5 l( N

( p, q6 X: p% |/ \% q$ V+ u: \( QThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
3 T% Y8 X/ F* {
7 Q; s0 G! S; a( eTomorrow is mystery.
0 z; B. c2 M3 x+ `& t. \1 ], D$ J5 |; ^' [/ ?% Z% v# Q2 K4 X
Today is a gift.
. m' p# ^) n! I5 i* [* f% f+ f2 S  A9 E
