You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
9 _0 o3 b" T* s/ z+ F3 H9 E
. T% ^1 e7 V% \3 v" KI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.4 e2 z; I3 `& s' J2 `0 P

- c+ B6 S6 d; WHis name was Kyle.5 {  N5 r8 C1 A, n5 o% Y' w2 P
0 w& C+ _. q) J2 b6 |2 `& }  j
It looked like he was carrying all of his
1 M/ @8 ^6 l0 z" ?3 h9 Y- cBooks.. p* p8 ?7 P6 N. K3 ^$ u
( \' D0 ?. p* j4 B; g$ ~# d
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
3 q5 v! P4 w4 W2 y1 D/ q0 {* D9 e$ O2 V+ m
He must really be a nerd."
# [% A# C( {" Z0 d
2 T, f, T; f# d7 O% u* U8 o3 `I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
( R- E7 B, \3 Z9 h8 Y5 U* m
1 t4 G( Q$ L7 P) a' m3 @As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
# L7 [3 X5 a' J/ a5 [" C4 }2 j
6 g2 l- [; ]/ G. x* m+ rThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
9 A4 }1 m+ y0 A0 V$ T5 k) r0 G, ?) E1 F4 J  {# A" z2 J1 w
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
3 r; R" x  J5 v; W; A1 ^; y! S0 s1 N* e* }5 N( ^& ^/ u+ n
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
- y7 l( u5 g# u; S* ?7 U2 N3 V0 M! k0 u7 d- G" V
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.& P: }$ G5 O! V) X! P
, h/ {9 M0 K" ]
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
4 Y9 {9 C, m3 n- f, |' O' C$ k+ G! D4 _8 Q7 `, m, y' x
They really should get lives.
+ Z5 b5 t7 b3 o0 q% U# U
9 Q8 o9 }1 k- Q9 N5 A% T3 k" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
8 h1 \0 [3 H1 h) y: u
- ], o% ^4 m# ?3 Z+ LThere was a big smile on his face.
/ h) n% {8 U% D& e' s$ c  A3 R! G
1 ]3 B4 V. [: G- D3 u4 ~: _It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
, n* p+ Y% ^" j  Z0 d. z3 \. {: n7 A! d% U
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.8 ]0 u5 y' u! @! ~( _# |/ t

( z9 F8 v- m. s7 K# i  l6 b" ^) uAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
# H( N$ E$ J! |! @7 H- |0 X
3 D; P* f9 v1 ]* f% |# B$ \/ RHe said he had gone to private school before now.
3 ?8 m% I% N2 ]8 k, L2 d7 P2 x' \9 p: D, X" E7 h
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
* @; V- e1 f- w/ R% z1 q; V4 J+ I6 g5 @# G' R
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  L8 P- S1 r2 H# l  Z) D
, F1 o& y, G( Y' a8 w1 r
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.  C: c& F3 p: N( b3 V1 O. ?' ^9 f
7 h  ]' L9 w* _8 d
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
9 n6 o" c/ F/ P& U2 T7 \) J/ Z3 j5 }. K% F' n& F  X  F) e) P
He said yes.! H  X6 l- {3 U6 _* |% ^) ?3 n

* @0 x8 ^* W8 y+ P* {" DWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
+ X) z4 d& H  s" l. b6 a
' ^! B0 ], ~( M* g* d4 }/ V, XMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
6 Z) N* o( l+ M
6 \7 K! F- M" w- J) sI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!5 O1 F! e1 u: @7 f! ?

) z, z4 v0 B# F. k" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
! G, T; n+ k, ~! H+ s5 A$ @' k: h1 s! F7 G7 Q% I- [
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
) @' t: i1 o6 c- J/ N( l+ H0 c, \7 O% d3 [+ N9 N
When we were seniors, we began to think
- w* O" J! ^3 {( {. X" T4 Z4 MAbout college.
% N  {3 q5 w3 ]5 W' {7 L
. r) S$ l# C) i' h6 W/ ]1 @Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
2 [* j0 W2 ~/ k1 E# i9 m5 ?Was going to Duke.
% [8 u0 \6 m6 k. [+ ^
0 z7 Q2 F/ q0 m  n3 R5 q3 Q$ UI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem." Q: s# q( {' T. a- C( G6 b

& b& X* C# V" g9 [9 [He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.& A: h5 p9 {7 ^: L8 m

% b, A: S/ i; u& D5 O7 u, n, Q2 XKyle was valedictorian of our class.8 g" b4 Q' X+ }! y6 D7 p6 p. Q
4 L% o2 V3 ~3 J: q; g
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.. e* I: M: \5 k3 i1 T
1 J3 _1 G( B" E+ S6 Q) y
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
5 E0 u7 r* m' H5 W' O. B
" F# c: G; C5 O- _; R- H0 dI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
9 z0 L" x- C4 o1 i+ h2 O
1 V$ k( q2 i: t/ q9 R9 k; l  sGraduation day, I saw Kyle.# r& ^. l# }- H) X5 s# h) |  z

9 u) \" B; i: f+ o  B( ?! _; ]3 Q# ^He looked great./ s  ?0 N1 t$ d

5 i! B2 A. ]: X* A- XHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.6 [+ Y  W1 p( Y4 w
# @, y  a7 z5 Z# M/ {
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.1 y: ]8 Y4 n! T! v/ o

" I2 ^" w* ~3 b; m1 P- z" _He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.' J$ g+ Q. ^3 O$ C) |
% g3 C- J  \! J) q! A: T$ R
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.2 N  O1 X5 q" H* C+ ^

" z2 Z* v/ U4 R* {: o/ h2 `Today was one of those days.& q+ f( C( Y+ r5 [4 ~# ?$ h

5 I5 b  e" b2 q4 cI could see that he was nervous about his speech.  N+ h5 j% ~5 G0 U# p; F% o

" x3 a8 Y9 [2 a( O' O7 NSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
$ e( Z# ~% F  T! ], ~' {3 {0 J+ m3 |) ?
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.( y. Z- z' e* G
3 C0 J5 S% H6 B4 T9 b
"Thanks," he said.
4 I2 N' _9 S5 k6 b8 P. @0 w' S7 W# T3 D2 ?3 v6 z# q1 p/ \& E
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
9 S4 {: k. E2 J  |8 J% V- l7 u0 U" e8 z, Q* |; Z
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
& T% `& ]1 _/ r3 ?
- }- R7 C0 x$ Z# L) TYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
! m6 ~% C' t, L9 E4 H9 z% v  r+ ?) U
I am here to tell all of you that being a+ Y6 |% q  a* O; w% u
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.% W" \, b# {0 _2 ]

$ @( A, b2 T- D2 oI am going to tell you a story."% a4 Y8 u' L( f
/ s, }6 [+ k, d, V! ^; g
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
- a+ a" x& ~0 ^
/ I4 E8 h* n" ^: q: qHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
7 M9 m; H8 w) ?# q2 R6 J; s- l; J) }' g2 i* C! \- E
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.% A5 X/ |; {+ k0 B4 O

. o! A( B# c! m" C9 kHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
" B9 {* }6 f0 o. Z) P& S8 u0 k) L8 \' [. Z) W3 a" l. z
"Thankfully, I was saved.
  u" t* X( N1 F- r! |* h
* i1 k/ S; O5 ?% E+ QMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."2 a3 S2 I1 R2 |$ r: l) o
5 B. \  \* D7 P8 r4 K
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.5 Y/ s: V' N9 {, t; z
% m+ o( W" R4 H( ]5 ?
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.; u1 v9 G7 \; E  H; `1 H6 Z% ^
$ w# |3 N. r  F
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.' g, E. {. m* D3 _: a: C
/ d- G6 O# D: Y1 e& F! v- q
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
: S( C( |1 N$ I7 u$ i
" E0 j2 |9 d6 l  sWith one small gesture you can change a person's life., y; e9 o2 p# ~6 k$ h: F6 G

4 }3 [0 I) a- gFor better or for worse.
' |* Y# ~& [5 o+ S$ k% T+ F
; ^. }* `$ e0 [; u/ y  k; y) QGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.# t  x8 m3 Q: _# k% w! M) E/ [0 R
' \6 \  [3 a/ W2 a) @/ y" U! z5 D
Look for God in others.. }: U! D- f. d6 t! U

# H& x8 ]! @6 K+ h( e6 sYou now have two choices, you can:$ V) s. B6 p( t9 Y) y

+ X' y" M9 e9 W+ p4 A0 g+ f1) Pass this on to your friends or' G8 i8 M8 L. u& L% G" n" x( B' ~% c
4 d3 G4 e, \! Y; Z
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.+ d0 E( b$ \0 B" s0 t4 p
" u1 K1 s" k) \; k
As you can see, I took choice number 1." T$ Q6 Y8 |6 ^. @- N+ F
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

" I+ F2 w* n& F1 vThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history." T; f" p: D* B  g
