September 20th-22nd, 2012 I spent 3 days with my buddy, Randy, in one of the most beautiful spots I've ever had the pleasure to wet a line in- the South end of Maligne Lake, in Jasper National Park.

8 i8 b* w+ I! W0 mThe only road access to Maligne is the red line at the top of this map. We travelled 22km in Randy's 18ft freighter canoe to spend 2 nights at Coronet Creek campground, way down at the bottom of the map; it's a heckuva long trip when your powered by an electric trolling motor- no gas motors allowed on Maligne! We spent Wednesday night in the town of Jasper, and were at the lake super early, anxious to get on the water. We were met at the parking lot by the greeter...  z* }5 Y1 I% r# M2 k( T

We decided it would be prudent to load up the canoe in the other end of the parking lot, a couple hundred feet away. Wasn't long before we had the canoe loaded & in the water...

We fished our way down past Spindly, Mary Vaux & Coronet Creek to the campground; picked up a few more fish on the way...2 c0 j9 _! G7 Z' ^7 Z% \

The last bit of sunlight clings to the top of the mountain; time to head back to camp. The mountains are so high around the south end of Maligne that daylight comes late & leaves early...1 x2 {7 o3 n& G) ?0 b

Cooked up some supper & chatted with the fellas from Jasper who were camping there. As I went to turn in for the night, I heard some rustling a few feet away from the tent; pointed the camera in the pitch dark & got this pic...1 a- _" U4 v3 X* @0 T3 z- r7 W

1 l: V+ @  `4 r% y% Q5 {9 {3 R9 u: mThis ruffie was hanging out on the paths through the campground on Saturday morning. He didn't care if we got super close; pic sucks 'cuz my camera takes crappy pics in low light...

# H+ [# a3 r& I- D8 W' }- mBackcountry throne; instead of digging holes, they bring these big containers in either by chopper or by snowmobile once the lake freezes up.... j2 G+ b: e/ q  Q' E8 U; T

6 E" |2 @; }- F& t1 a4 _* [Packed up camp & hit the water. Fished our way back to the narrows...

Tour boat. These boats & the warden's boat are the only gas motors allowed on the lake. Tour boats are only allowed as far as Spirit Island; once you get past the narrows you don't have to hear 'em or deal with their wake...+ z8 t8 Z. ~$ [. m. T0 v# v

( ?1 M3 f8 }5 H% J! N& e* p
Nearly back to the boat launch...; |) u% a3 ?. y& ]2 M' C, e+ K6 C
+ R! S2 t& L/ ^+ n% }

9 d8 _4 e7 C* n+ [. }, ?+ \3 zAll packed up...* R* L& `+ |# C! v+ y

/ O% l, I3 C! h+ Z9 G1 }
! {7 Y/ x5 s1 W& d; C! f* ]" xThe only elk we saw...

What a fantastic 3 days! Fishing was actually a bit slow, but that didn't really matter. Pics cannot possibly do justice to this place; the scope & scale of these mountains just cannot be conveyed in an image on a computer screen- in the south end of Maligne you're completely surrounded by huge mountains, cliffs & glaciers. It's truly an place that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. I hope some of you get to make this trip someday; I'm sure glad I did!
