& e* m5 k1 y/ Z6 G. |& O5 SRansomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company. " Z. x: e0 J: K1 N+ B" S7 w. C

Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. ' N+ A+ W! K! [, X' b2 N
) A7 Y4 i# c3 ?- b% J! f; E9 ?( R' pIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”8 W( e, b! @* |0 l1 e S
7 h+ _$ I& V' V, G; S“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” / M0 I$ B2 j2 k7 G L3 S4 |

Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer.

# V" s1 V G- h# kIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
% L s5 \6 K- A' I- h9 f" T# {3 W) _* ^" Q W. ~- ]
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
' Y' f" Y9 a% S1 ^% g V6 e, Z•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY. & }9 c" v3 O/ W3 K, X
•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
/ N" r3 _- A7 i! ?: a: H$ V& F•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
, e! H9 _" ^2 K: ~+ `The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. ; \: h% H6 w" F0 @9 E+ |: W
" E M' w5 c5 o6 l/ A4 B VTo protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection.
