Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company. " R3 V0 t- u, W

Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.
; d8 [$ s2 o, L) y% z! b1 E. O4 X/ P+ e/ t7 b+ V' u2 S/ k$ L2 M
It has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”

“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” O1 L H7 q z8 B+ g: h0 h
% [( F5 r4 d( m1 @Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. ( I8 Z3 q7 Q0 F6 T

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
, {* n5 ]/ j0 C4 M/ n$ }$ X9 D7 M0 `; H6 N3 \# A9 B2 A
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you. 2 q# R/ A$ s1 h, p' M* H7 x
•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY. 9 ^* |: o f0 T! `6 K. A
•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
! q4 X3 z1 f9 x8 Y2 \•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with. & _2 I2 V, |; p3 G2 E' q4 R
The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware.
