The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware. w# @3 |+ B h/ V" Z; x
# S, r) z6 O/ M; d$ h

Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

3 [7 _& c: B" p X1 _7 _) \Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.
& }3 \# F; W% |6 z" e/ E% A: S# T+ m8 O) l; ^ p: h K+ S- S& _
It has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”1 c$ z6 i$ x7 [+ m0 M# X) F, F9 l
# D- O+ P4 P- ]0 O“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” / p, U% S5 A" }& c6 e) D& @

Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. $ C2 X+ J# {" E' l, e6 J- X
' L! ~+ h6 n# o* NIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: 8 a/ z7 K( x: d; {
* i5 B5 Y$ j* ^( O
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
d% f( F0 o& M) s/ M2 t' |5 P0 Z•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY. + M7 v. z$ V# s) u* x& C/ f
•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
8 l0 E. J R4 t* U; H•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
, b5 A/ q# _4 j; u6 }The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. $ w5 z. @" R: |$ U2 v$ C% T8 u& n

To protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection.
