The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware. % p# S& ^5 d5 {7 A, _. L
! X$ A) b8 z# _, G/ a% E# C9 l

Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company. * H, `1 x: [3 H$ p
# |7 j1 v4 P) v9 P. X# c! a/ u, e2 ^5 pSeveral reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.

. g$ H/ l$ t& s/ K9 C0 OIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”# ~) ^4 [, U. Q9 w* V
/ R5 q4 o7 B/ M# Y1 I
“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” . M+ d; H9 \4 R, ], P

Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. - Z% D, L( o3 g2 Z) w1 x! d7 @$ e' n' m
- {$ `1 C# z3 x$ v9 dIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: 6 u, c1 b% U4 B5 t+ i

•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
; _5 P a$ [, B: C1 ]•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
8 U, B L. T& v y" e•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
! u8 @% F6 c6 n) R, s3 r$ [•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with. 6 M! }# R* Q( ?% g7 r& H
The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. $ ~5 f! g: G9 I' f
; l& g$ B, C u2 w$ jTo protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. 9 Y3 V$ J2 z n j# f2 [# I- o
