Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company. $ l' L* f m5 j7 J' W
% ?- [# G5 b# R) j+ ]Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.
* P" K, B: m" Q$ M0 J) k- _# l
( B6 ]! y L' y. HIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”& T4 u7 f& e: x/ R" ]% B, \$ W
, f& O, t: ~: X; r2 D+ P$ ]# U8 H
“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” & ~; F( K5 t* @9 b! P X$ v$ o5 ?
6 _' z1 E& G' e, {9 [Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. ; l G( Q" l% b% }; [6 M

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: ; r3 e {' G2 K; }- B4 U% N7 f
- c4 k9 ~+ b2 J \! p' d$ m! g•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you. 4 B# U0 a, @6 F$ D- i
•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
2 ^- |& q6 c0 ~# y0 O0 M5 _" B3 D•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money. ; W/ u1 j3 d) m3 F. z" E
•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
u0 u# F4 q7 t* p' N0 WThe recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. 2 c7 l2 m" V% ]+ b2 L
( E ^ A; @! X$ _To protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection.
