, e0 m% I+ i1 EThe Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware.

Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.
! G2 R: z! i0 y) u0 Q" ?! F7 M- p: Y
Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.
; T0 U; h- O5 ]6 d! n" d' p
4 {7 n5 R( N/ y! l/ hIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”2 U6 i/ [# M Q: u
+ b a: K& v U6 N; ]9 ~5 _
“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” 5 h) X% n; P4 }9 k9 W
: v: F: a9 t* P- p0 \" J8 vRansomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer.

( E- S8 O& a0 {8 DIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: 8 S. d- ^* m) P/ a3 w
/ Q7 `7 E2 y A/ I. Y1 z& ^2 l•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you. * U, U7 F" p0 }$ N; v/ o: `5 s
•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY. 1 V# l4 L! j7 Q& x4 Q6 O! ^
•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
2 v$ h) E3 f6 q9 I' Z: b* r6 N•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
1 N6 S* T6 o' L6 z5 A. O8 R2 L9 c8 B1 ^The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware.

2 E9 _' u' @5 lTo protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. 1 L& f9 |- d$ Q9 Z
