2 k. B6 s( g& O4 u" bRansomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

1 ?8 \4 P3 J F8 `, I2 mSeveral reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. * w. H5 b8 K( p0 I5 c" E0 n

It has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”

- L2 f7 T1 f3 `5 U. W“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.”

2 u2 J/ w; |3 H2 L7 ?2 s- A/ CRansomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. 6 `7 X! ^8 \2 f) W0 T& o

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
! f S# U- f; @
4 d9 X! }7 l- z' R/ C•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
* r% _- Z- x# L2 @0 s# }5 [4 q•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
2 k2 s2 E6 y! m" R8 _6 d* C. U•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
! {& ~& ~9 C: m0 q2 p6 i•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with. + _' `4 ]- }% ^' U) x/ h
The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware.
