Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall8 P! |& A; P5 `6 a4 {- A: A" Y0 @
not do any of the following:
$ B& P1 F6 d+ u) U" d+ H2 C(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
& ]* R" n/ o0 Yvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;: U' ^, J) ~ R. M8 Y& v5 _% m% u
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor) r* B* T0 G7 U$ f+ u' j4 V+ f7 |
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;4 Y) R1 R; W# h7 `: M
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
& Q( N5 A, [- v9 C8 J3 {) [permit another person Y9 ]5 q, G* m3 A3 ^& b( S) J
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
1 A8 G g, a! [# D(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,4 A- L& e/ x' } T
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- ~( e5 J1 }) k3 l5 v(d) give or lend a financial
1 Q* [ \/ @- E7 \! Gresponsibility card or a copy of it
: J) e9 R, Y$ Z0 u# Q& eto a person not entitled to have that financial
) l, l2 }' Y- K' W! X1 nresponsibility card or copy.

8 w8 u- T8 G: l0 w. m0 y; qIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
+ P/ B0 g1 W" B- Gwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
# k" D2 f# H5 v m% nthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
" G3 `7 S; F! R1 U( u(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
K2 M! t6 i9 j# z. Lnot an insured motor vehicle.

6 b) y4 j& C" ZIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
% R M% `, S a+ w, hAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this/ j% H1 ]) z( c/ K5 o) j6 v2 m; I

(3): I0 q y1 d! n$ B4 J& Y0 f
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a1 _8 \8 ^( J! B% i0 A7 l7 F5 m
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the- |/ r7 [' r4 r/ r4 v! E
Insurance Act, l( c* u3 x' @+ X* T- A4 s* V
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy, X0 f& Z6 _2 J" I
outside Alberta.
) q3 h4 O; s& ^; O) e+ |3 e$ W(4)( ^, R6 d1 |8 |* l- v
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection5 P U" B1 x, ^8 ~% n# s' D, e
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
+ W+ ^5 I, N6 l1 b. {% ~# R(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
' [" Y7 F- f- }. Y& a5 Qand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
) D: C8 ]+ `7 [6 k5 Cimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
2 s: X. b4 c6 a7 \4 F& e' A% Nmore than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
