Insurance required

(1)
( l; N3 e& c. b+ }# oExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
1 g2 N. J$ }: P9 D! Z2 J Gnot do any of the following:: O* N, D! D/ i; [" @: U% ~
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
) ~& m) A5 ~% J; Wvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 `4 G' L4 o4 |7 q
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor0 ^4 \( h! \- T9 N% ?* h/ t
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;9 i% l7 e6 R8 h
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
) u/ g9 P' Q3 u% c% epermit another person
. \5 `4 g e# U2 T(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or8 a' I4 V: b" ~# P$ g. Z- w
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,+ O. U% f4 k3 I
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- e. p4 c% E- G" u+ Y" x* N(d) give or lend a financial e1 N$ Z6 f3 }5 ~/ _" Z/ S7 j
responsibility card or a copy of it
S2 X7 ^; X) o$ Lto a person not entitled to have that financial: K* a& M& @% M5 e0 Z
responsibility card or copy.
8 Z9 l( q* V% q* u) a! N3 S(1.1)( l' @- k+ `- _$ j! ?, S# T
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
9 x! S; {: b+ S2 K! z' fwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of8 z6 [$ ^: M& h, ^
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
# O3 U3 c9 j, s+ K/ X7 c(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is* k/ {6 J! I1 ^0 z p
not an insured motor vehicle.0 ?, e6 k' i9 ^% P2 H9 j
(2)# v* n D, h) l( Q# b8 u
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this: E. [' x& I, Q) \
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this; w }% o0 ]; ]

2 B; H6 O3 V1 i6 QSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a0 D" d( G! A1 o3 Q' I: x
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
2 q3 h' ~+ ~9 k8 t# X$ p$ { |( J% xInsurance Act
1 Q( X1 ^" j5 a: Fby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
1 s& R$ q; |! Z- ^5 _ y. F& voutside Alberta.
" D% C# X, }' Z3 N(4)! K' y5 Y4 s9 z2 y
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection& m5 U3 T Y! c# b) Q) `) t& Z4 @
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
) d% j' Y( j6 B+ ~5 Z0 H) p# }# L(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500, c: S2 Z. F1 z2 u$ v7 p
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
+ I$ j- ^: A9 B# p6 L+ s% Timprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not( Z; E- H, j8 Z
more than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
