Insurance required

(1)
- K, ~( u. p* E6 IExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
0 v8 z# N$ e* j) m+ t, [2 Anot do any of the following:7 e4 t& E3 C* p7 ^4 \3 |
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
- }( Y' t9 u: F- [vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- r$ P$ u& j: r" s2 `# K! l(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor" J+ t. s1 s9 K
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;4 b( N# G J8 [% n, b: a
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,3 J/ ^) ?9 ], Z1 p3 }* d
permit another person) [5 ^1 }) z5 j. ]3 S+ b: _
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or' e) A$ P" [6 j8 v8 L @; ]
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 I2 B9 C3 D7 a6 {/ M punless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
: m1 U$ S. g% Q8 G4 k/ Y4 v(d) give or lend a financial: i5 ?- v# r) |& h5 n: t0 F! y
responsibility card or a copy of it
" Z- n8 U# `5 @, b( ^to a person not entitled to have that financial
# g0 }7 @0 H& Fresponsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
) L" e2 T7 q9 H2 V+ X) X! M1 bwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
* a$ z5 Z, n3 w' cthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
# w6 l' o6 ~" I% f9 U5 M; C- ~+ e(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is- {6 j" [$ O+ W3 C2 H- z
not an insured motor vehicle.% _- L7 i7 ~0 G/ [) v

& @, }/ ]2 {& T; `) z/ p3 wIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this: m- j3 T8 s( A' I( Z) z0 F. A
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this I `3 D. @" i* S: {0 C5 s5 }

(3)' B5 R3 W0 y8 e: y1 a# j
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
( j4 I1 O; y* Q& z4 `financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
3 s- ?, `1 Q, sInsurance Act+ k' d U7 Q% h/ C
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
% f" }) ]0 U c% soutside Alberta.& P o; x! l" F+ q, R

0 U0 M2 u3 Y5 h) iA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
3 g: p6 L! A) X' {+ w(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
; v2 @- d) U; s; _: p5 C(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
* K1 z, D n' I9 d# q! nand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
5 o( e8 e6 q$ Q: M1 Gimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
, M8 l4 H7 h+ @9 o) smore than 6 months
2 h3 m$ ^) @4 L# B* H! I
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
