Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall- \, y z2 O# g4 y0 P
not do any of the following:
# |# D7 U. Y+ o) A7 H* y(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
4 o+ x# b/ |+ N: A- yvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;# s0 |& I" `/ U9 t% L) `
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor' @; o8 y V8 F+ R2 C& i4 ~
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; X+ J3 i# v' ]! B(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle, a! B& A3 x* c
permit another person
: ]6 d& g4 \" t, O, q2 k, |(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or3 f+ F% O" M+ }
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
* J/ n2 T% y8 b: @3 n" Vunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
% l% `+ k: c) F9 ~* Y4 \* e(d) give or lend a financial( @; `+ z7 D+ y p+ I% \
responsibility card or a copy of it6 d& [/ K+ v- M1 M9 T; i' _7 l' @
to a person not entitled to have that financial
7 T# I3 V" v. w; Dresponsibility card or copy.

; ]# a: X9 p( ~' J- K' x; }If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
* F9 R; x. C" v5 K: Gwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
# Y# x& [. Q4 x- u; Dthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection( V9 [! B5 }+ R* E; s+ U' `4 w
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is8 |5 `: `! c9 L& H
not an insured motor vehicle.

! {1 V8 j8 t+ K) Z; UIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
) E9 N1 E6 [9 XAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this5 e0 `1 N7 k: f4 @3 j" k6 [2 e
section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a+ G2 R( r5 v, y' b- r# Y. X
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the% o" e0 Q. t' j* z, ~
Insurance Act
. U( i2 J- F4 P$ T$ Mby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
4 E0 ^* ?% P; S8 H. \0 u u1 N% F; koutside Alberta.7 O* n* b4 K$ b# Y! o7 @
(4)0 {# F" j* m( G. D) ~' M l
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection G9 k/ @2 a3 ]" Y
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
V/ w! S4 }- N+ g+ r(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
+ V: H2 b, f9 {% v2 w) ]and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
; s: q5 X5 {' Rimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not) i7 x, r. P9 U; T# @4 K
more than 6 months
0 `3 j! C, Q \+ }9 _8 ZMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
