Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
8 H' w, y- C& ~- h/ k7 snot do any of the following:5 G5 x8 X8 W2 o0 z1 v
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor& v% }/ p# e6 `5 X/ G) Q5 `
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
) ?1 n% e5 R. \2 P$ {(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
0 \' |' p7 ^5 q* |7 avehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; ^! B( S6 r9 W+ b(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
; e! ^2 [# M2 o& N$ E; ypermit another person
; u) D& G3 n/ n9 r(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or* e- y' b( k7 T
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway," j) M/ q- C# T, V
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; a% j2 b/ u$ r. T& K# i(d) give or lend a financial
M% M8 V7 k+ F% O# T6 w) Nresponsibility card or a copy of it1 T9 m/ X, t4 Z( g) c, c2 n
to a person not entitled to have that financial9 y7 H% F" C$ p
responsibility card or copy.# h: i$ Q3 C3 M7 n8 ~
(1.1)- C% ]2 c( s, S
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway6 _- [* Y3 |& P" U" n
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
9 h' T* B9 I7 u; Tthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
! x9 D( t: F9 j1 ?6 L/ G V(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is1 ~- ?* |9 [& [ G
not an insured motor vehicle.

" ~5 O' m) H# n: r7 G4 VIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this; ^& n* S2 [' c; b
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

(3). W b, i7 n* v8 L( T7 S4 X
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
) m @+ }+ |: A' |financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
: E @# t6 Y2 \0 z2 ?Insurance Act
# u" ~4 {! f8 T: M; U+ S7 hby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy: K4 G* i' m0 E$ s, m! o
outside Alberta.
, z- s3 T3 h5 P5 W/ H7 {(4)
9 D; n( N) ~6 _! G h. QA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
3 e( ?% c" ^8 l(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
0 T; _$ t+ _# X6 \/ E(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
' f9 q+ A9 b) ~/ E2 J* B$ Tand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to9 V+ y: q# i- v X7 Q1 p) K5 l7 p
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
( V6 `3 ~0 I" d; vmore than 6 months
# {( ^* h* P) J0 G: I; Q1 r# `0 ]$ t
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
