Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall' u, ^/ A) W4 s1 k7 O
not do any of the following:
2 Z) w" v6 @5 }% q! j) h2 v$ `; C(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
2 f# e! E/ p2 t+ svehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
9 i& [8 c' e3 L) S5 x6 F(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor @0 T9 I2 p9 L' D4 i5 n+ _
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;% H( m! {1 s: x) n2 y/ d+ N
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
4 Y" @) y; o" D/ T; K5 [permit another person$ I) X8 J8 J/ J3 v& l! ]6 _/ h
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or% L8 K( H, v5 Q" q- \
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
3 h2 ?4 h& ^' m0 punless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 ]$ q6 c0 a! l3 N
(d) give or lend a financial: x9 J7 A/ C0 G' A6 k, L
responsibility card or a copy of it; J) `1 b- s% r x
to a person not entitled to have that financial/ B- v9 `0 [7 v& h" l ^* |6 |
responsibility card or copy.5 X2 j5 z6 g5 s

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
5 k D- u- H4 `# J3 Vwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
% a4 y% |( i3 B* V9 ithe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
8 E& F. f) f3 F. S3 M0 a(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is: X& j- ~7 v; z/ ~( a0 p
not an insured motor vehicle.

3 d. z5 b+ A jIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
! P* B3 C2 g& U5 s( j1 zAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this; y3 L( e# E4 n9 z# g& a8 c
section.

financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the

by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
& y! {, q5 G0 Q" N w$ \outside Alberta.

. o+ h0 Z3 V, n! [A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection1 W# |+ ]; K/ U" ?4 C
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
3 F) @) v$ u4 ?(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500! I, q, I) q, |$ h/ Y
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
7 L( R( G/ F% [5 Iimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
* @6 q9 P) V1 K, m) e) pmore than 6 months

2 W. B9 u7 U/ l: Z0 ?, KMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
