Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
, m7 g, r0 B4 e( x) J# s! Bnot do any of the following:
2 B$ P5 z7 L3 ?# `# K2 g(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor8 I5 T5 X; s! j1 ?* t" w! M
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
. p' X5 p- |# c+ g9 V! {! y(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor% V) o% H: {! j' ]
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
" L H4 ?3 Q5 j(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
- J( g/ B% K, F; r3 r gpermit another person4 r* B+ J, `, E* a7 _
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or3 P+ ]" X7 x( g3 i R4 R) R4 j1 p
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 |* J1 J( Q2 T- A% xunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
% a. b0 |3 }- y+ _5 R0 c. P; @(d) give or lend a financial
( l4 P0 f5 Y0 r5 r; \responsibility card or a copy of it, h! {+ F! X& ~0 x. c/ N
to a person not entitled to have that financial5 p: G. ^2 M/ M8 n; F$ I
responsibility card or copy.

7 s7 A L8 s4 u% g" VIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
( V# q& g( z/ uwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
/ m" b8 w" c6 v/ S1 U g+ F7 Xthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection8 o- N4 f( ^& l: u
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
7 ~% f; `* N# O* Lnot an insured motor vehicle.6 b+ a0 s7 c7 ^% D

" `2 Y" F+ X9 o" p5 z# EAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a: ]* S" l4 u `3 i% h( ~5 f
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the% H# K, `* ]: ?1 `
Insurance Act
4 U$ {, k* H7 \6 k2 k# qby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
- ^3 Z; y5 N/ B boutside Alberta.
) i+ _, j( ~, I# I(4)
* ]+ ^% X' A" [% r" k3 lA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection' w( M3 E( v! n8 f1 x
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
; K; t/ L w4 s9 m(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500* b) u' W2 o4 e! w0 ^
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to; R, ?: g/ _) |% Y
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
& z1 _4 `4 k0 ^( |more than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
