Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall6 [( Z8 K1 Y; \/ O: `) L D
not do any of the following:
; v3 M( Q% e; l; x9 N/ ^(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
5 @$ ?0 A, q9 K8 @- Gvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
4 n5 z* i- Y1 L9 l: e) d(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor' ?5 }1 @& W0 B
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;& y3 H" R/ }1 r g; R0 ~
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,5 \% X4 ?& [: z H0 f' r/ {% w$ |" C* D
permit another person
5 g) [+ @# o7 }(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
- J( N( w; B2 S: {3 r+ v(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
: l; i ]* W" I J8 ]& F8 yunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! }, j% G& a5 h" L/ O(d) give or lend a financial
4 o6 n! T$ K8 t+ R) F5 oresponsibility card or a copy of it& f& |# ^$ v H1 @* ?0 n' {
to a person not entitled to have that financial
9 ^* `( v! ?0 Y" jresponsibility card or copy.( L6 ^2 D6 `4 F1 @* R( K, ]5 b; G
(1.1)$ `" T1 [: d. C: \0 W
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
' ^ l. j8 l, J: _' mwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
( z" @: s+ _6 \' kthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection$ M8 h" A. b6 _, L
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
9 p+ Y8 ` o! z. @) r" Y8 T- n2 anot an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
/ _, ^5 v* }- M! PAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

. s7 I7 V* Q3 G4 a5 i8 `% v8 bSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
, o. y5 }. p' g' w B; p9 s4 m" y; Dfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
/ Y" d4 H7 A! R. E, K9 u& B- R4 }Insurance Act
) a; t' E" l3 g' c, E4 [1 Y8 M: Bby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy% }- R9 H6 w6 x2 X( q5 u$ Q
outside Alberta.

$ R) G! `2 A+ x2 oA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
7 i O- Y) I& c(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
- [" y- v" ]' Z' s( e# Q(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
8 u p K) i7 s! f9 z3 mand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to! B2 j4 E" O) a( i
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not, N3 }& K% q' z# ?9 p' V
more than 6 months
# t4 L a: k3 s$ iMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
