Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
$ S n$ p* Y1 J- p7 unot do any of the following:$ P% T) v4 b$ a
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor. u* W$ i( f2 [; f
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
5 T: ?( ?7 n4 q: f5 U0 }' i(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor r# m& \" J }9 ?2 |9 C" D0 Y
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 ~. m" [' Z9 x# `8 z! S
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,! `4 `/ A' m% g( Q- h7 u; P8 h
permit another person
- i2 G7 W! c) I% \/ m8 l' _(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
5 i4 @9 X: P5 ~(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
) Y, G7 d/ a3 Runless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
' q& G) a1 ^# r* J1 T8 K+ s* u(d) give or lend a financial S. N& @7 u* V
responsibility card or a copy of it
: E) D# m |# v3 Q6 oto a person not entitled to have that financial3 Z- p% Z) A' f B) H+ h4 J

/ w6 R* \! U8 L" EIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
$ v8 s1 R' ?( v+ f& x9 g. rwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of, P7 E" B1 ~ w/ O
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
8 Q" k) y6 e; Q& W0 F! ~(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is3 Z9 _: P! F" D3 p5 O4 R
not an insured motor vehicle., | W; A+ B& j) u9 M" v

Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

+ X3 i @. T% V" e5 ~$ gSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
) @3 B% G0 H) V+ [- }# u& e" b; ^financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the. z& s$ o% J& g" D2 H
Insurance Act
, m+ k+ N8 g& e4 sby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy' `4 m! _& o; ]/ B/ w, n
outside Alberta.
& X/ C5 Y* z. C7 Z- Q) B1 s(4)8 r: \& G5 N% Z& T0 x6 A
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
' d2 O( d S# V7 g% n(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,: a, {* @. g: ^$ b* o8 Y' P: `: s1 N
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
6 d/ @" J! o, G: ]" M! vand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to; X2 v1 l/ d% X3 k- i$ V: ]% i
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
, m, v4 R3 `- _1 _more than 6 months

! K3 x V! a/ J! sMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
