Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
( x7 q3 V' X, B# p$ i9 |not do any of the following:& K) {* p: s% V* J" @
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
# C# {3 b( p+ K3 Bvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
$ D) R; ]; h- f; p(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
3 E- H- e% W; @5 ^2 r0 r- qvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
7 H4 M" w* u# v3 P+ k, h' N) e1 c(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
3 J2 i6 \. G* v; a4 Tpermit another person! n5 n8 t [% x( a% |+ [9 a% Z
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
7 t- U7 x1 T4 E; m+ u& I(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,4 a/ M# e& }; L }4 \
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;6 G- g5 R8 p+ d' z& Q
(d) give or lend a financial* _3 {( C1 y; U! B4 L1 B
responsibility card or a copy of it
8 {" R* k4 n; B1 \to a person not entitled to have that financial
; q+ g, p( a8 w8 ^4 Eresponsibility card or copy.9 l& O- |- I6 e* }, N! v. Z

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway$ y# U# n$ L: E( D. s# r: p& `- f
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of" N! o% w( U. h- A8 e6 ]
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
3 |( J7 u5 t0 |1 g2 U; b. x% `0 d' Q(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is! V( `$ {4 l2 O" k, |9 y+ y
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
. }& c- A! @ i- oAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a/ j2 w9 t7 d" O" ^% i' e: D
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the& I3 f* h: T+ t1 o) T( M
Insurance Act
+ P7 M+ |" Z9 D3 `7 Mby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy+ [' P) W5 J& [" r) _
outside Alberta.4 x7 K Q k+ g* p* d% y

' a. [/ p( j5 }1 t8 I3 l5 IA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection2 E: h! H' }7 V' I; D8 X: G
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,3 B5 m- @+ l4 S; n' \) I% Y
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25009 C2 b1 T: b7 w/ q
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to' b& C8 Q2 H- m! ]$ K7 R6 o
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not' ~; L7 v# |/ r5 Q/ [' H4 R
more than 6 months

$ N" @# N- u' E- vMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
