Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall6 S' A& f$ d3 C
not do any of the following:+ d( t5 O( j# o3 u4 C3 S
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor: q2 z& H) q7 T; E& m
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; C" u& r' S" R/ Z" x" Z% u3 `* P(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor, O% n* R% Q5 l- C: ]
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
' e0 B# ^" ^: W$ n) L, f" ^8 V( M(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,/ ^! W; I: v6 |, X
permit another person8 ?& T7 l+ x/ e% z- O) E
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or7 D4 j7 O6 z( F# L
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,: T3 P, d# F) b/ G* P) ?( X
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
+ N; x {0 r! v- t(d) give or lend a financial# O8 Y% A7 Y! I
responsibility card or a copy of it4 t9 a2 C& P# E2 V# X6 D5 F+ k
to a person not entitled to have that financial! C2 e+ w" b, P/ y3 M- ^8 Y
responsibility card or copy.

' G% w$ h- G' }- y4 n: @/ tIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
( k2 ~; \) [' D5 p$ w! K- mwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
2 m+ R# c( h6 ?6 ithe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
6 J T2 r5 c* j' F! A3 F! g2 r2 C(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
! l2 s( ?" K& G* c$ C; mnot an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this U* s4 `5 J- A5 x$ P% {
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this) K# `5 ~4 F8 ^
section.

9 |/ y. V: I7 ]6 U2 ZSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a2 C+ Y& L4 E! R# Z. l7 P8 [ w) T
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
@% O: B( A9 G8 @: i- DInsurance Act
* U. w6 f- V4 S! w" Pby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
9 t# f1 h( O. S) N1 ioutside Alberta.7 {" |. p, O7 H) x3 W

# z% k7 b; C* q9 @$ Y& G e8 _4 zA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
* G4 D; W, q/ m- R# v(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,3 Z( ]1 E( M, T8 t Z" q) z y
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25003 L! B8 w3 U& `9 O' T
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
, K: B) }* f6 w* e7 G# simprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not6 [# z" b Z: F& n& z* u/ x
more than 6 months
