Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
/ s$ X+ i+ N" P5 D5 pnot do any of the following:4 f( U( l8 d; v# E8 G
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
" i% t3 Y' t p" rvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;7 H5 m/ H$ |8 ~, o: x
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor+ s' p7 j$ M& U3 m) a! s S3 E( a4 `
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 e; i a7 s7 h
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,3 P% I U. z, J' r% U
permit another person
/ _7 d4 N! @: L& {) @. L(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
# Q. |( P( v0 G5 V* n% ~(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,/ O) M# x! Y# q) z, Y' V
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 ?% s1 e1 g/ \
(d) give or lend a financial3 C/ R% h/ |' o$ P1 {
responsibility card or a copy of it+ a4 e; P y3 C
to a person not entitled to have that financial1 e$ {8 H3 o' c8 a5 i1 F
responsibility card or copy.1 P4 B8 K7 s( u1 @, ?5 l! _; u
(1.1)* R+ H0 [2 x( l' j4 J
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
6 u) s- g) D& X" _. o+ ^without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of- L1 P& N+ @# I
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection9 \. V* ^; C0 S3 ?! p2 s1 L6 G& f
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is, T( v9 s, G; Z5 J
not an insured motor vehicle.( O7 X& z- Q. T7 s$ b
(2)! }3 n! q3 J/ Y+ o! l+ }1 v7 q, G
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this8 z+ x) Y5 @9 O
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this4 c0 k! l+ Z2 g; s- g( j& z- b2 y
section.

! x. N( W% |$ }2 }) VSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a) w0 U2 Z R2 |! o1 O# C
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
; c* Z. `* h0 ^9 l$ {& L' O! UInsurance Act* b; N) f% P" c5 |
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy5 V& t2 u- }9 I# T/ ]- p7 ?# k5 w
outside Alberta.
+ u! x _ c ]/ b+ V* l% w C(4), ~! }' U- \8 T" Y; @; u- F7 d
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection" t4 v. Q# z$ F! S" c. {" U' |5 A( f6 k$ l
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,4 O5 G" s- N5 d) i5 \( U- {
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500" l: O0 k% y7 m7 d: C3 C4 m& p$ N
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to! t. o& \- }3 Z$ _
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not; j' i ~! x( k# a: `. J8 l" a
more than 6 months
4 u- N% F) k! }- ]7 U3 ?, c& Z
' Z% ^6 l1 S; ^Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
