Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall3 @. D0 h. X9 l+ Q5 w! x. K- U8 p( y
not do any of the following:
2 ^# X: k, C0 j( k2 w8 L(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor! C: X5 g' P2 `
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
: m5 ]$ W+ {$ y- [- P(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
_ r1 N. h% X3 Mvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;- A, }) F0 U+ f _4 i$ C
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle, ]8 Z. i% b9 V) S D( |; V* L
permit another person/ B2 J/ u @8 N
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or9 Y% M G! T A$ n$ Z8 O! G0 V
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
" I3 m/ k2 G# Ounless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
6 V+ f: Z% J. Z, ](d) give or lend a financial2 M p2 O# o) \( b7 k
responsibility card or a copy of it
6 X1 ~7 Q, z I$ g, Zto a person not entitled to have that financial

- w: q h% p: A! ^! o/ z B: fIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway

f# c3 r* J7 B# f# a3 g( zthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
. K; ^2 P5 \) W+ n1 t* P1 P(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is& s" Z1 M: C, Q' Y' f3 T [) L
not an insured motor vehicle.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a' y {" p, M! b$ i: m
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the0 M+ r7 ]* F: b
Insurance Act0 c) N' F4 n- o9 z
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
% u) X( b4 |6 U1 g9 B& v) Y. R4 goutside Alberta.
8 L2 ]: X. W0 j% S! h" @' C$ W) K(4)
& T4 `8 E0 H# Y6 h% i9 A( bA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection/ J; z, ^3 b1 ?, L1 x
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
, t) M* L2 z) g/ Y7 G r(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25006 {: e: H4 e: P
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to1 p! d+ ^- h: K5 g$ l
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not, d* ], T$ i* m, q4 c u
more than 6 months
