Insurance required

(1) M+ y% P. {1 w) x
Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
4 Q/ W) T0 T; c5 E% V# S9 snot do any of the following:
8 G& X# K* _' z9 y$ j(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
+ Q# k/ [+ @6 t% {9 J1 Q3 ]vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! e; Z4 k k% U3 w. D, n7 w( z# R(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
5 J8 `0 W H: S3 V2 `/ I/ z2 Nvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;# l( l f9 Y8 m0 u
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
$ j/ ~/ r0 X9 `! m) S4 D; ?; v Qpermit another person# q* O% m! R u3 Q. u6 ~
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or* U2 E4 q% ]8 O3 E
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
6 O. h7 G( v1 [$ {unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
& Q9 s- [, X* L- h" T; o% g(d) give or lend a financial6 q9 v$ {8 v$ m, F8 \) [
responsibility card or a copy of it) f3 i6 n: T v, T- ?, J
to a person not entitled to have that financial
2 L8 U- d0 s& y5 J0 Mresponsibility card or copy.
8 f3 O# X8 x1 T; }4 n: ^(1.1)4 r$ i }* g$ b) w& N
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
0 p0 G9 `$ M/ x) Xwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
N8 i7 P# M# Uthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
; e, |& p7 @, y(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
9 ?7 }$ f9 x, cnot an insured motor vehicle.7 K3 X) n) t5 x( \- R1 A4 q
(2)+ @ v; k$ w' k" a% q5 T$ \
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this4 |; x+ |+ ^1 \+ }9 }
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
3 E+ Z" S6 l+ ~: x3 Wsection.

5 Z" N# p8 a6 S' sSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a3 r! H7 U$ \( H ]
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
; J9 }5 w7 `3 H% s0 H6 ?Insurance Act
% v! E9 P& ?& v& y/ G" k+ c9 Oby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
* Z( m" L( m3 Routside Alberta.
! \5 ^( q: a# F, F(4)
# u& c2 @% M! L9 ? eA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
1 q7 _% m: R- B0 _( D$ y(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,! l% F. u, e7 `& S: O
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500: R; J6 a! R7 N/ K' x" i9 P4 p
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
/ d m9 u* c( t8 u6 \$ Timprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
3 j" Z. \, B. Q: Wmore than 6 months

! i# g) l" s7 s# H6 q2 [Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
