Insurance required

(1)
[1 q0 s( Y) b% O8 ^# aExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall% G9 l, ^0 Q( q) c# @
not do any of the following:
% U" c. m/ a0 b2 C* p(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
1 T0 Y: \2 a2 R( c( C9 \5 D3 _; X. ~vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;6 h- G% S* j i) F
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
; A$ @2 _# d; A6 r/ cvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
1 y2 _8 M" s* S0 `(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,% u" B0 s+ y% M
permit another person, j. L x1 g* I/ u; ?& ^" c' X
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or6 R8 T [/ y: V4 Q8 X, g
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,+ _: K" f7 _$ H& S0 K
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
' i% E5 o9 S6 j6 _(d) give or lend a financial
3 b' c8 _( W9 q& t8 |8 x$ Yresponsibility card or a copy of it. p; A/ M4 U( P9 M+ p# l* n
to a person not entitled to have that financial
/ u& ]" |5 }0 P* U" jresponsibility card or copy.

9 c- P! W, P5 l9 f7 BIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
( ?( q; k0 E$ D) W8 `1 ^without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of5 C- d. U& s* y* s( f7 v
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
$ [: @8 O& C2 o9 z* G(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
8 E/ @0 L! ~2 ^% Wnot an insured motor vehicle.5 e+ e- G( _) W0 l) i; @

) @$ Z! E8 D) F- S6 M S7 W }% ~If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this( `- L+ {2 E1 o3 y4 r
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this3 h( q$ O& Z" d4 j

(3)4 Y' D; ~! s7 @5 P* H$ q; G
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
7 W& z9 b! r1 J5 C6 P5 H; K2 qfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
! T' l' D* T* A3 t2 N, aInsurance Act' g. e& K+ G2 u: h; H) _
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
" w, }$ u2 z4 ~( N1 toutside Alberta.
& L! y7 J1 J% ~! T& j* g, ]/ {. o(4)0 y, Y7 Y. {. {8 b& ]. }. D
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
) z u. b' U0 j0 h& |(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,- s! ?, x4 V+ o2 |4 c3 q1 L
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25006 ]5 g6 U# q0 R4 u2 i, y* M1 E, ~. X
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
/ y& U9 _) u: ~5 h4 F2 [imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
- F3 }! ~' x/ Lmore than 6 months

9 }$ I( F( ^5 xMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
