Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall; P% V4 x7 G1 Y, E. ^7 o! i
not do any of the following:7 @5 L3 L; t( W& u# X2 x% L
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
1 R, \& A( z$ Lvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;" w1 }$ v k. k* X- ]% C2 V3 I
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor0 Y4 G0 r e8 j) C: {5 g- B/ M+ M" W$ i
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
, L! v* i4 x2 ]9 I) ]7 m(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,6 \; T+ f, B. Q2 e6 S; S
permit another person
- E6 ~( {1 V/ |" D. c4 ~' B(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or* M5 M" l) n, B; j
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
* x1 c/ O# e( ^$ Hunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
) z/ f) ?) [# U( ^+ @(d) give or lend a financial9 a7 Y9 g* F( B7 }& A& D. o9 ^
responsibility card or a copy of it0 K# E1 R" q; A
to a person not entitled to have that financial
& A3 I& ~' b; r M& yresponsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway3 o2 W; P# O$ {! T3 B8 L& H; s
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of _2 [; \$ Y6 |2 k6 m4 r
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection! c0 B) C1 _$ j
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
4 V7 O) s! @3 V# enot an insured motor vehicle.3 Q2 P7 W! g2 i5 k3 W! E" ^4 U) y* a
(2)6 s y; Y1 h1 b9 a) h
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this( N$ r8 N1 m2 c9 c" @5 [# e& U
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this; w" B( A' v8 g& w/ o
section.& g0 i0 C# Z% [0 p( H
(3)( u, k' C6 e* L. A8 I! ^( B
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
2 F, _9 V1 v7 Jfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
% T2 p4 b0 p' Q# `Insurance Act
5 }" ~, n, O/ l6 t- @by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
' u6 M, Z9 S N- Uoutside Alberta." X# Z- F) c) ^( @

: w$ b5 t6 `$ x- c7 Y: u, B+ l dA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection8 |3 {, A, |) w! M, H8 A' j
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
/ r( ~! U5 e9 p2 U2 z(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
2 V# s: \& `1 f. y! K! wand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
. B: N# G4 c- Z5 [) H' j7 oimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not3 A6 m$ u" I/ {. u6 N
more than 6 months

Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
