Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
' Q0 |' s% M9 D1 t3 ~9 L7 anot do any of the following:+ D: y: [( f3 n9 |
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
* `* R. M) g/ {. ?- l9 ivehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- v2 H: n2 {- j" z' v(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor% j, l3 [/ {2 \ m9 d2 d3 d
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;0 g/ C$ i8 d3 W, j1 X9 s
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
: V6 j$ r' V6 M0 fpermit another person/ |5 P& B. n; n) l
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or( ~ q/ o. ]. P' X8 Q8 F5 T
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 l7 L& a; ~7 Y8 R% Gunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- h2 t2 n. p5 ^, {; _: y2 q* [(d) give or lend a financial% _+ Z6 l) R9 {& x6 G* m, h
responsibility card or a copy of it
( p( u! M; y5 ^4 Bto a person not entitled to have that financial# Z. D: l1 Q! x9 s$ f
responsibility card or copy.

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway% Z+ P% P2 @$ k$ n, `0 }. o3 y/ v
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
5 n2 N! r9 S+ O. ]9 ?the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
, J; T$ v, i6 v4 N( K(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is( g$ r6 M1 t2 }
not an insured motor vehicle.$ l7 x( d6 X P4 o# l

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
, e% c8 } q Z- pAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
; e' R: n+ ?: z' P3 W/ g3 |section.4 d2 L2 ], D* C4 S7 Y
(3)+ Y7 ?' @. B) R. |2 C1 W
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a0 P" }" K' C# y, _, w D
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
+ `% E, U1 Q- m) r; }, ?7 }" wInsurance Act
2 \* V3 H; N4 v$ R4 r. p" Yby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
8 r% N, a, M7 ]) o1 Koutside Alberta.
% B8 q6 T9 z' t3 b! S9 h4 p8 T# v3 t(4)& ]8 z7 {& T( ~* ]2 p
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection6 P. N+ K( K7 _ r' a: B: x
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
6 O+ T8 H7 U$ t. ]& b8 j& p% x(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
) g% Z3 S( Z9 b, I9 i ]and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
2 {) i& ?" E# F/ l) z! R# Aimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
: |3 F/ |8 C0 O ^+ C$ s7 Dmore than 6 months
7 I, h$ s: F* j- y& `! `9 z# X" C2 e( f. }7 @& h7 U. {4 ]7 }
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
