Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
8 _, w3 _. W: _: X7 f, rnot do any of the following:/ S6 O* ^7 ~4 Q7 c% u
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
+ L5 X3 C$ `# Fvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
8 _' E8 n) d9 V( c) p/ d6 R, X, n! \% G(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor4 Z$ e! B3 p+ r( B2 ~
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
+ t9 f, A" v2 W4 h. h* q% L(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
1 F/ a5 X! ?6 r5 D$ m: b* Opermit another person8 t! z4 V9 f: z. ]) G5 i4 w) p* V
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
8 j+ a# o# A2 J B) G7 K(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
2 r, q; ?7 \3 Lunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 l2 ~; h- l8 \5 P0 F
(d) give or lend a financial1 r& N, J& F( e- l) L# l5 T1 F
responsibility card or a copy of it
) I( O x+ v3 Y9 X8 \to a person not entitled to have that financial
; |9 g0 N' V; K+ X& z# Iresponsibility card or copy.
& B9 B ]% d9 X) u(1.1)# @: X$ C; t; ]+ H8 Y R2 C: _% e
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway$ T0 ]/ k3 Z# k& u% K5 x
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of* ]6 j+ ~; V! i7 h3 k) `
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection( V2 T6 ?4 O4 ], w! W
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is& s' d; L3 }' R/ w& L- l/ `5 L0 L
not an insured motor vehicle.5 F, q s" G k9 G9 t
(2)/ U ^/ z: q+ e0 A5 i0 c1 o3 l
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
2 f" S# Y: n3 FAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
& g, A/ x. m1 T4 w/ C) Gsection., H, x6 M$ \& A0 ~ I# R3 E) Y
(3): L- l" G; g8 j* _5 u3 b
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a5 T w5 C: ?' q* Q7 s |6 }$ W. ^
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
9 c" E0 f; W$ S! QInsurance Act- B( Y7 I# U0 j4 F8 w
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
; w! c2 U3 r! woutside Alberta.
7 R+ J X! V6 q* T0 U% ?* A(4)
+ Y! K. ~. |5 UA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection6 c0 k9 i! k2 {4 f4 S5 p# x+ g
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
3 F5 O6 d2 x4 k8 X" l8 [(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500( d9 A! y( N$ L" v# P8 @
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
f) _3 R& A) g8 @' |" nimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
. y% [0 E8 q' K ~6 rmore than 6 months
: _/ w& ~2 a; @* j4 Q" A
) ]) D" j4 s/ e iMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
