Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall. V( }; C+ } p1 }* B0 \) V
not do any of the following:8 V. a: n0 K }' d2 E2 {
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor/ a& P/ ]. C! S7 v+ J
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;- j; C0 d% @: R! E: t/ A1 ~
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor t4 [- k% B2 `% |& ]& }# j' {
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle; z1 `; x" z; E
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
5 }( e2 C3 i1 q( ]permit another person0 r$ }% t3 y; B" ~& L6 j
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
: k; f: G0 }1 p(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,8 t. S* a8 Y n) I! H0 e
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
6 A% ?7 U/ G* A( I# |$ B! [) O(d) give or lend a financial" R1 ~* }8 H; y% P% p0 L
responsibility card or a copy of it, V! B1 h/ }1 U7 P* A8 q
to a person not entitled to have that financial4 A- G- G: Y% ?9 j7 e' I
responsibility card or copy.% l2 \$ j9 S Z
(1.1); Y* q7 c0 g. \* B1 Y( A
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway6 b1 H3 H* B! c
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
8 p/ T' [& I4 x1 S& F. O; athe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection+ S0 P3 X! G; S3 a% w- a: x
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
! v2 v- V2 e9 f/ {0 hnot an insured motor vehicle.
$ D; c+ { W, z' {6 c0 G9 f5 j(2)3 T, a1 B5 e$ X$ C
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this* u4 d, t# q: i. |' d
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
0 J5 I: Z: F% o) | l7 i! W c _section.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a) e4 I! s6 m; Y4 X
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the; |9 }& n1 T" H& {8 [
Insurance Act" H( M, e/ y f% j U
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
* x3 _% {) W3 l2 ^outside Alberta.& M M( {: _3 K m' `9 }# Q+ k6 O2 T$ {
(4). O" u9 ?! k+ d1 {) J# v
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
0 |+ a; X4 |0 L(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,- b$ \1 i4 S2 ~5 F
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25005 r# q- }* y4 Y8 b: U
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to! j3 [5 d( y+ g8 ~/ w
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
0 m& F5 `6 x& `) r- [9 B" {& h% Ymore than 6 months

r3 {: `' e7 a7 ?! F" O5 tMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
