Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
+ G1 a& h1 y7 r) ]+ Fnot do any of the following:& D: z5 g8 I! a" h( E9 X% N% a
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor; \- k( X; u. V
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ i! g) C0 k" [9 x; N
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor6 q) m, Y6 N3 x" }5 k
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;/ J' F% r- J% q4 v$ Q
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
2 n9 [3 O# i. I1 `. `7 n2 Bpermit another person! i" n- J9 i* ]7 X8 e
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
8 z* q6 F4 d6 h, T/ K& X(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,) q) @" A. `4 c3 W3 s3 W; v
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
; f) l6 D0 @2 T' s' o' ?+ D5 J(d) give or lend a financial
2 T; n2 @ D) v+ N* m9 c" sresponsibility card or a copy of it
, s. \" e8 S# @. J- T$ @6 ~to a person not entitled to have that financial! \2 a# \ g, F/ ]% k$ }4 o0 n u. d$ B
responsibility card or copy.
1 n9 f1 K$ i6 i* ~6 J(1.1)9 L) o( u- G3 f4 A* t4 V$ ]
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway& @' m# m/ q! B! B. ~7 X; C
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
7 y3 z7 j; J8 uthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection* i7 e) U# _1 x, v* g/ N0 |' Z
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
$ R- r* }# U7 W0 G# c/ V+ r1 pnot an insured motor vehicle.$ A9 }1 k( `& u& ^
(2): U' a4 Q3 I. v+ V1 |$ B/ p
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
! |* W F' h7 u* h# OAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
$ \! d- H% a% Asection.
0 q+ b* F4 i( \4 ~(3)5 K* F/ o7 e! F& Y& v: [$ B
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
1 y& j3 t+ I0 X% bfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
* \: ~! U5 V: y; j1 f" A3 \- UInsurance Act a$ O9 r: H4 ?! U9 S0 t- J
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy1 W0 o3 q0 t8 Y( I' P; ]2 b
outside Alberta.5 U) S. W3 z2 r# ]# }: _% v
(4)- ^. q4 W" g# M/ k$ O1 [; S
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection3 F) G- U( j) w$ e& v) f! T* C
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
B2 Q) x6 {/ ~1 X L6 p8 Z1 V(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25009 T5 I! \# j4 n) z! D# n; W
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
3 ~0 C( ?! F0 e9 z3 N/ _6 ^imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not4 K2 e$ I6 n) t& f: ?" u
more than 6 months

3 K' n) T- M2 O) P5 {Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
