Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
; |" f7 r/ I/ f: Z1 C. qnot do any of the following:
) t, F. O# p" {7 v(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor1 K; t3 x; R* M. {5 c+ g
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
3 p2 C5 K5 e! Q2 F) H# a(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
1 v [% V# i! q0 hvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;( K& L- u% Z5 k" c
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,8 e& y {( g; s1 f4 y4 e2 _
permit another person* P5 O' G) n9 S7 S: n7 M0 \7 }3 V
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
/ n; }1 A, ? M(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,8 ^( F( ~) \' T! k
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;

responsibility card or a copy of it7 v8 a, |0 z- A) ]
to a person not entitled to have that financial& A- L3 K( h4 R9 ]5 R7 r
responsibility card or copy.! n/ E! w* v: p1 N

4 B, F. m- W/ F4 H/ zIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
+ R& Z$ t( ?* ?without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
" |; w) ` P% z- G0 t4 Ethe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection8 f% N; R+ M9 b3 P) ~" o6 C
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is* C2 j( \9 O+ W! e2 D5 B8 }
not an insured motor vehicle.
) G5 b, e- H% m7 p(2)
9 V7 j, V( a( O8 D) `, R: L9 i5 SIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this6 Z' F+ B- \; W4 Y, E
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this% U5 m& e' y( r: e
section.

/ {0 M% E5 \, n) z7 N, p- _2 i" u8 ZSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a. W) c8 v4 [) r# \
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
/ H4 X7 x2 F' C3 H# y0 C% V( {Insurance Act
# t2 @5 G3 W5 G: vby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
) M+ U {. m# g. t+ i; }' F' [outside Alberta.
2 O: R& I h5 o+ M* V(4)) g. S% `; c, Q0 Y8 U# e
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection, e" @' F9 z; u i! O: i
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
1 Q, T+ g' _' E* n9 @; Y(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500" g5 q% ~1 U; M
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
7 j# P1 u5 ?" I. Y5 himprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
3 ^" V1 h Q' e! `. P3 t4 F! C2 Qmore than 6 months
% q% d, C4 `9 s" G) j Q4 n& X8 z% S$ }9 }3 o
Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
