Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall0 d' Z0 e8 {6 S/ `+ [
not do any of the following:
, e2 _* V8 l3 x4 v+ b(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor: R, a9 _/ }- c7 B5 F
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;& G( \8 G* Y" M% B4 k
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
- ? ~1 n: \- dvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;7 {$ \ X$ B& S; Y
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
' n1 m; r: [0 }2 P/ \4 |permit another person; I6 G5 F+ u1 r4 y' f
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
+ C7 n4 @$ ?: q% f3 ^1 d(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,8 D$ }! f9 F) \4 d& J
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
( L1 d: o! e; r/ ], W(d) give or lend a financial: f6 p2 E/ c- k! ]# o
responsibility card or a copy of it6 H% Q. B5 x& K7 E; p
to a person not entitled to have that financial3 i/ Q! G. P7 f2 E
responsibility card or copy.

& r3 h7 u) W' z# C# C5 N; q% C NIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway& y0 z1 a8 m3 m9 l- b
without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of% o$ d8 w* N4 P9 _) k
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection3 ]2 i) w3 Q% |7 D8 s6 J
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is' C4 v- H/ F) }; d5 p! F
not an insured motor vehicle.4 M. Y( o: T( ~& Q( Z0 ]; c

Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this- L! O9 `+ M) N3 K L

, }3 e7 c$ n5 L4 eSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a7 b- u$ l2 C3 t$ t
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the

4 K: D5 N( {# {3 Lby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
1 \, u) l& y; ~$ N! W" \outside Alberta.
! W6 N1 F/ W+ |( b(4), a7 }3 u& d$ V! a+ N* R
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection8 f6 ?* G; j$ r7 y# A; o
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,' Q" Z5 f' y0 W1 v1 o
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
- _; z7 q) V' E/ \and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
9 i$ u6 U8 n, c; Nimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
' C( R" z2 x5 ^1 `more than 6 months
% [2 Z; C3 K. n6 t1 F* s+ FMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
