I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I. m! |4 h; O$ ]8 D6 g& ^# t( e
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,- c+ |2 q6 t& `9 J+ m
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
/ L8 I: A; z0 _( G$ xattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them5 j; C- I/ f( z7 _% Y4 A7 }
will acquire language earlier and faster.# ]1 o" ~1 S [8 P% B6 g
$ I( A5 \" v" W+ C& j
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately* s6 [' @$ \0 |/ I5 T" t* \/ d4 ^' p
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop- b: m$ H7 C- K4 s9 y0 ~
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
G% y1 n2 N, B7 e- L" Y9 Gsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you# _) @7 \& D9 ]- Q s/ D. q- q4 ~ J
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your$ G: R* R# i; I* s3 O. P& n7 r$ \
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used., ]1 {& ~2 m4 u; C
" ~& G; ?* E9 l. F4 G( U# Q4 P! ~At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common4 N. b7 j x1 U8 }! C: \/ L2 _
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
) d8 E5 Z6 W& I/ \! g" ]those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.4 P% y1 t1 Y0 {6 ~8 [- j/ n

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
( U3 E% o8 Z; i; L/ o4 Zproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby$ J8 `6 ?3 |" r8 d4 g1 a6 n
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to3 ]7 }# m! Z. }; U
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.( B$ e @# ^+ e% G/ y

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,: N# i& B1 A! R
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.9 D& l9 X# v' M- v- Z
6 u3 s+ Z! ?5 x5 j3 QThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done5 L8 {" s; w: N+ `
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
: l. K) r* V) q' X6 j/ z7 zis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will! i, N- C& Y0 t
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate, p4 ]1 X8 |! {3 }8 E+ C
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate./ y+ C& H4 f! p% r6 U( d
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
" ]* S5 w; d, I* R/ Pare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show7 D0 _/ w1 T& P- B+ H3 y' ~9 U' C
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
& n& Q. j8 [% i4 n% \. {& U& cin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and$ f) m: `) E: M# G- s) e" Z
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
' c k- W+ U0 ~) A' \and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of5 ^1 b( r6 p% c
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
/ W, d/ X$ c' tjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child0 W% I5 a4 o& \. I5 y- c
and the parents participating in this study.
