4 j6 V3 Z. [. z ~# c& pam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,: @: K, S9 J, M+ g
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and3 u f& _5 }0 }( v' X& E! ]
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them: K" G% H- G# a
will acquire language earlier and faster.* V" J$ i& O9 |+ }- `0 K8 @
/ j3 Y8 H* q3 a7 F: c
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
! X( N2 A2 o# R; |30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
- [; ~! M6 ^/ e ~, \, C7 fvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
! {' p* Z7 c8 X: `. g H: i( Gsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you! R& Q* B" d, f. m( Z
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
+ v1 [# s8 [3 R, U7 p0 Wbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.* C' L( m9 B/ m& p
0 b2 o, A( @# Y% a+ h& E. r! J. l
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
( O" r. M" K5 nbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
# m' q1 E. l& t$ D' N5 v4 O$ mthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

. G+ U& w" r4 u x$ m" JStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
$ g4 U$ e: \# ` j0 _6 d4 L) n1 }# Rproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby. X2 n1 C( W2 }+ }/ n5 f8 U
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to1 V, I& [* Z/ e1 i
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.% R! X" ~& t% I. U' V8 ]
6 ` E" L0 P# |: n3 jFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,+ ^; B! l$ u% j
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done5 D$ M- x5 f' c& e' \
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
+ M6 z2 A' E: @' I) Cis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will% G# p" b% h, H" N0 K
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate, @) c9 i" |$ Q- m
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.% c/ K5 e* b: Y/ c$ K0 D+ e
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data8 w' \; M( l; f: ^! Z! P
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
9 h+ K' R( R7 I. Vvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used; i& }$ f9 E2 `! M, D) G; ?
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and+ Y6 v- k0 d. P+ g! I O4 a7 H; b
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
6 `+ d4 U2 I2 x, c- K. jand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
5 K1 ~ R! l5 I f& q, oHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
b# d; w: \5 m4 O8 l/ n% Hjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child2 t/ T, z0 O" f3 u
