谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语$ H0 H+ k' G' {9 s# U$ T
/ s- L7 Q5 E4 F0 K3 E6 W
( d4 ~! a; J' x; x9 I
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
! f9 M) Q* t! l2 r之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
) Q" _8 i/ {1 V! H' O# A8 G$ ?% o# b若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
. j0 n( Z) N# F9 |* [  E: s! Z- r7 E5 K7 S; x" H: W
(1) empty suit:
9 ~/ K. S5 V( ]9 m指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。6 b4 i% p. N* B- p7 y* [
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)2 y5 M/ y* w* |* }/ S# k1 l* n
例如:1 u2 F) I( N! o1 y* u
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.3 m# q( L; K# h3 ]
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)
9 ]( Y# `2 j" Q/ \Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.; w, J0 w( X# {
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
' T3 v5 t7 V* t3 e8 b1 f& C/ J虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
7 u, j( E8 ?" E- M4 ?) OThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
! e3 b3 {+ B# g0 M% Z(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
0 R4 F1 g; k0 B7 I1 b& k. j- S(2) fair-haired boy:( H8 g5 Q0 B3 n9 a% }$ D
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)+ K6 d: E9 c( M3 x' @; F3 o( @
(通常用单数,当名词用)
2 B  g; w$ {) {3 Z例如:
. O+ n% _. N5 z3 hMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
+ A+ v! ]( C3 N  r0 `) R( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
7 M7 o2 N# P( ANot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
  t; B! @% `* Y0 A9 K" W$ _8 ?" y(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)9 Z( Z. k/ _6 u' X6 R
有时也可用复数:
: Z) H; d: j5 L1 B5 ~Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
9 n! p  Z! t7 c- j1 \( }8 \4 T(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)( z6 l* `# T2 H0 S! T4 b
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
1 g, K$ L) i/ u% o( H  V" {6 n4 S(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)/ }% b  l& I( B8 g/ m( a* i
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)7 U2 `+ }9 Z8 P2 ^0 Q
(3) fishing expedition:, C1 Y, s! {9 B1 ]0 R; _
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
+ m! A; Z7 J: [5 n(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
3 \6 t- t0 g6 ?4 m2 `# g3 l例如:2 H' h0 ]; z! [5 p
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.0 P; C5 C" v- M# B) B; `# g- d
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)" Z1 B/ E8 G# J6 q% s. A, a
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.3 ?: \7 |: T# N
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)- `0 x; o5 q8 U" q  T
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
% `, O" Y; Z& N% X' c" hThe reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
0 z$ l  n' C0 u* o$ J: P(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
" O& a8 O1 G( v  }3 T4 J3 s- @偶尔也有人用复数:
3 U$ `6 O& }6 ~- u. t8 rSeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
: e+ o+ K! g& W7 w(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)% g* k6 B% d  u
(4) filthy rich:/ G+ w/ E  F' L0 U; M& a7 Z0 Z
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
2 O- S- e9 z/ }, _(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
0 L2 u8 g9 O% i* o. [多半当形容词用。例如:
& j0 x  a0 G' Z: \% qWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
& f7 M4 Y: r) m% g( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)$ X" L# s- ?* B/ T
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
+ G2 S% [4 ^) G1 I9 k% `(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)& i; E% r6 R) }/ ?% G
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.1 f8 y, S- `0 T8 s/ H2 V8 ?9 C
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)0 d: t* b& r7 Y# J4 X8 U
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
; f8 @' O; Y. h4 U5 K) p(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)$ I; S8 L0 S! @" c
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)+ B4 Y+ j( i3 G) `# _! y
(5) fairy godmother:) `* D' [% T" @
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)4 X, T6 Z; R2 a% V- H) F
(多半指有钱的女人)! u: ^& l- L9 G- O1 F2 ]( m( Q
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:0 u7 r% ?+ p  n0 c! q
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
( v9 x3 e* F( T7 X(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)9 Y: H8 n! N* X& X2 e
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.! N: Y" ~* v% m7 P  |( J6 F1 j
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。), q% V1 H) x+ P) w: _& \$ k
有时也用复数:
3 ^1 g- n# E: R6 O& v" S- R; dOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.
; @4 M5 a& S6 o! v(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
1 j  Z. M0 b6 r" K- V# {+ _3 R7 _In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.+ j! H: g$ y2 ?1 N; T
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)/ q. H* g: s$ J" c  X4 F( F- w
& @( V( Q" \3 l0 e4 T0 J

( ~' |' C1 W/ Y/ [( x# `6)eye opener:
; E; q4 F. R; ?; \指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)* ^6 E! B2 Z: C
(当名词用;通常只用单数)  m& J2 v4 Q: y! b
例如:2 u0 U7 |  e+ o& k- X
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.# w7 A1 j7 k- O
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
. s. r0 I3 C, f5 iMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.  N0 M( l+ M2 I9 [( I
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)8 O- r2 _! Y. s) m) I
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.% c( K7 Q. U/ j! i2 q- F+ k
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
/ g1 p3 T, r+ y7 U  @7 [$ Q1 n# fSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.3 }0 v% d9 A, e, o
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
/ V# h5 r1 a+ O+ s/ F, L(7) hot dog:
# m6 ]# T! d- S. w- `9 z( V指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)/ E* a+ N! A# e; T
例如:
; P+ q( y1 ^8 D3 QSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
; v( a+ J& }$ P/ |8 Y" M(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)$ {+ |( N! ~$ |% c' e
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)- C& i8 \9 m' I8 {
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
  ]( B) q! \! V! y1 f, l" J0 s  l(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)6 s5 l% Z- s4 K4 W7 S$ E3 P
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
6 T* x7 J! M1 _- ZDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
/ z" o7 K  v7 q; X% ~1 L- Q/ m- U(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)& Q# X; p7 N8 L2 L( W- q/ `
也指真正的热狗食物:
, e9 s, w- g; K& t3 E/ F8 W) ^9 XThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.; J( R  X3 V1 i5 K1 Z: F# n; }
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
; Y! L3 Y8 O6 }也可表达欣赏的心情:) P' W: e: A8 T; C
Hot dog ! What great news for me.$ W- P8 ]; M: x# r

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)* k& d4 k* S9 f$ D3 e6 X* o
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
1 ^- V4 T9 l" ]. [  A+ ](当名词用,可指男女)
8 `+ T. W" U0 c3 y1 g8 ~例如:
& U& P' l6 U' m! A/ ZJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
" o; S8 k' e3 u4 `% @. z(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
! V$ X% ^. A# Z/ W0 D* g! TBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.. r2 E* k' K  e* _& z
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
  U/ t8 R: h' h( yDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?( Q( D6 |. m6 f# K- l) W/ C3 s" h
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
& w6 B; y: |" zYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
3 }5 F3 _0 k: n5 o(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
0 T% k  O* g. V( d) z5 o9 l(9)doubting Thomas:( N. E& D- x% y: K  v
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
, W/ {: T: |1 t$ M# P- X(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
' F9 T; F2 D7 S9 ~7 y' O(当名词用)
* ]$ F5 [+ Y5 L1 _2 |2 o例如:' P! V/ C9 I. I9 i* A
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.' Z" Y8 h8 V! R% x9 ]) f  z
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)5 D+ Y' \# @0 D  q* }  N- N
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
5 _# A: |; x3 F- ]0 P" V(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
, e- a6 C" y' j4 a* B也可用复数:. N) v! m1 f* X6 s5 N
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.

If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.: d6 G; P6 J# R& H: g/ H6 Z7 O

(10)dragon lady:0 e. F) s9 z) n6 c* `/ W. k
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
' {2 [; F* Q/ V2 l: w例如:6 F" p  n) ^- C
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.6 t# U: H" R5 _/ M! [6 o2 f5 s
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
7 ^. F& `! ~* O4 @6 _I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
5 |" C4 P4 z6 D3 o(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)* |$ O5 p1 \+ ?. `0 E
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
5 z, m( k  ?2 v/ b( P(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)+ p# m4 t* L5 r1 T% i
也可用复数:
/ x0 K3 S4 o$ ^; ]! M* b/ _, pThere may be many dragon ladies in our community.: w5 Y9 D) \' R9 f  {, q
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
- |6 O/ ~& ]* I& @1 R注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
