　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

) L- z2 t2 W, _) z& D2 \8 }* h　　Both sides of the Great Wall

" C) v5 e- ~. g! i; j　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

# s3 R; }0 o8 _3 S; G% j　　Is stilled from end to end.

2 ]6 ?- V. A1 Y9 [5 _　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

6 D+ U! P- k( u+ p. g$ Y　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

& O  ]; [6 ?2 Y" H% H; |% E　　Vying with heaven in stature.

' R2 ?) N( ?4 N% c　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

" p9 T7 i) Y8 v, X2 }( z/ J　　Grows more enchanting.

' A! L  Z6 F2 R! N- G　　This land so rich in beauty
! U9 a6 }4 S5 V, B7 |+ T
　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

  B' E0 u& R- p" X: }- o0 Y/ t　　Were lacking in literary grace,
" p1 N3 Z' R9 W$ @. z
　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
9 ?9 X9 |5 {& f  B/ ], j) G　　And Genghis Khan,
; Z  Z+ ?1 O. k! ?; ?9 C
2 V9 h; W, @! p+ D　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

% l6 G9 d8 u6 ^　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched
8 c/ D" w6 m8 ?) }" `
　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
