I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
0 E3 u1 }! W0 k! HIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
# |+ I9 D( z* R% z7 dEngagement Training.

1 m/ [: a0 Z) `7 \* ?& K8 e5 ~We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,& P% N1 u" ]( v( o( s' S6 ~/ }+ g
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
. u5 U. c& w5 ~$ \, [7 y' ~+ Xgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
2 @6 m1 F& b4 E+ J' xtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy8 X, E' i2 }( i/ S
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
0 s1 r3 I8 m1 U: W+ K6 e! t! j/ xPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years# e! r* D( C: Y" Z5 W6 N- n
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
! o: t7 @* |5 K. W: |conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
" x# S; F5 ^8 x. }international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:7 o. D+ e& X7 x$ u
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter* V2 G' r' P, Q1 f1 X% n7 q# y( u
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the7 I& s: ?4 t2 e9 w5 \ C; d
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed1 Y" f8 T9 R L8 r3 H' R5 B
international peacekeeping operation.- D+ k( \2 Z1 h2 n4 }

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their0 v0 ^( H( i w4 }% Z
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
& @' g4 k9 |. O9 G1 kwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV: Z# ]/ p8 q- ]: X
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
) t2 y8 Z3 d5 \0 w2 _% |& z4 wAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
: s8 L6 b$ [. z1 A# w; @improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
5 _9 e2 p/ T$ x/ gand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!1 m! L# x' g) O; [* }: n, S* c
( G8 B( [. J& p, [& cAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the1 f0 y( q9 K8 k! Y8 A3 k* r
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
7 ^9 t6 B6 g7 J# v0 zprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
6 V1 e9 x, {& I2 M3 o9 A' t4 Uhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
: w) J0 |2 V4 q eAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
+ V* D5 H) q1 M4 Z# i9 n$ S Zso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
