e" F- L3 `( vIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community3 K! C* ?2 U7 ~1 \; k
Engagement Training.

( I: Q# [6 u0 aWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
. c+ o3 R, Y. y7 E$ p3 T( m( E3 u(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood+ M" o1 |, t* D8 n
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
+ I6 Y5 ~; ]9 ytogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy* U2 u7 f1 E, d. q
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.# q5 U, ?( f; F% h; j

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years2 J: p! \" l0 q$ D. D/ T/ ^$ C- V, ?/ D
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
2 M3 r: T- s% ]% T; W* b. ?conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
6 P4 n+ t- c, b9 einternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
* `9 c9 {( W: G6 j' gthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter* X! T! ?# H8 d( r9 _3 j5 k
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the$ U+ }) v; ]* p8 i
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed/ {' s) H6 u7 N# d+ h7 q. r; D
international peacekeeping operation.

+ _, M% b3 c( E8 OThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
; {7 |" J5 k \. r7 A. Jown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people6 Y' M. `+ S7 b. H- |" Z* V3 [! n
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
; A2 p8 U+ j: F) i$ y+ i: w9 Sscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and. K& ?& ~6 v+ n% C
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
7 b+ W. p+ r6 r% Cimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs: L0 G2 T( A$ p; b+ k9 K
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
: N G) y' s/ ]" A/ W, z. l8 p) A. J) N- k
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the5 \4 W: z8 v5 Y4 `4 _7 l% y
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole! H! |5 g! ?/ u+ p A: `. x! O
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the% ]0 x4 F' P+ M% S% ~: B. y) W
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.9 G+ a: L% t, m+ g. N. o! j
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
0 y, p, |* g/ N. k A$ ?. ]: @& fso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
