I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project./ Q$ w) U: X+ b4 Y
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
3 ~" Y- \& G6 g) l" n7 Q l& ~" UEngagement Training.

' A4 u% p9 C7 t( R }, rWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,9 f) O. A+ g7 c5 i0 b4 @
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood# X( L! d9 n& C3 d4 z6 p0 {
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work7 J' S+ ?8 Q' h6 \0 {
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
7 ?% Y" D1 w5 p3 d" g3 Z7 v \Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

% m/ o' V% j3 B, A" vPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years* g* a5 T' L- Z) X
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter; k1 @" R( C5 m/ w) ^3 k
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the! Z5 d% G" ?9 n ^/ s
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:6 [. C9 J( d; K* {' A" V& v7 T
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter7 }" M: a* I3 R+ B" h3 d
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 L7 q( G# l4 ~' A% O3 m F: Tisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed# ^6 W- y5 c1 S
international peacekeeping operation.
* ?; |0 z5 L1 l" `5 g4 Q* G& V. n W0 Y1 k: ~
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their( w. M( D( Y S- k3 K
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
, S6 m- n( \8 }5 j1 {% w$ G% m- ]who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
$ F8 V7 M b! b7 I t# Dscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
5 Z, z! s5 _; AAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
$ o C: A- v9 U+ R' i0 P7 m4 vimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
c) A- o. Z. y! `! L$ c- Iand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!% K) K, Z, Z% R" @

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the! u1 e' p, B g7 v8 V! S' Q; B
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole& v6 n$ c) c5 F1 e- h! G! x5 E: d; n
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the0 a% e3 \1 ~$ e+ L6 ?# S: p9 W9 d# K
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.6 d4 ~: Z# W* @1 W# G
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,( `* e6 L% `8 c5 Q0 j
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."! s, j9 c, i$ s' T
