CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

  L5 @7 X; L* t' \; kConnects Logistics, the sole supplier to all liquor merchants in the province, will be able to raise its rates Feb. 25, but not to the levels it recently asked for.

% k0 j7 _9 l8 @0 e7 JThe industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.

$ l; G8 Q1 I0 h$ J& oThat's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.

0 d6 t/ X8 y2 M4 n, j! A" l. EThe increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
