CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract  R1 g, p% W8 t3 u3 p# Q! T

& u4 D4 v) @. t! w$ N% |JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  # x6 k! [" V% F* T( R
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
2 K- L5 O& J) F2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  9 v) Q! n. s5 ]* V2 n" c& ]# f. l
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
7 H% o' H# r% m( jStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  . s& \1 u4 ?" R
year following their appointment.
" L: r( O7 m4 W4 x# o- R5 {9 a6 Z1 s  C% W; H! c2 p* m
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1 O; c% e/ I* ?: D- _1 V# w& g# `3 k3 h+ z7 ~% B9 j
1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
) p8 ?% R$ }8 r' {- b, e# s' W- z7 U! r# |
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.

; ^% j4 x6 A7 w, c. ~3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.
3 T. c, d( S  w( F& l8 o- Z* i* _! o4 D' S* W0 Y3 b8 Y
4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  7 Q+ T& y/ l2 m' ~6 i
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  % k1 {- m. ^8 G" L+ f, d  @& W- F
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.

5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/ 6 J7 @9 u, m' }6 O8 K
referenda.

6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  ' R( R# ~& J% }+ s
parties.

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
2 {+ a) ~* F( F* `: l; D5 }( i6 h' a3 Xreferendum.

To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
$ ?; o( J  t* e2 p6 Y7 Z! s% {  _6 H; OBylaw 2000.
+ a& D. M% u$ t1 `- p
4 x% i# k+ Y" X$ u, ^+ F# [/ M10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  # f( \4 x' x' Z
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
' k+ a. c, ?4 ~1 }0 Z8 Qfrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
8 F, x/ J* l* {  ]  Y7 U0 z$ k2 q) wof voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.

11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  3 o  V4 {$ |$ }+ A) |' w
the course of an election/referendum.

  g+ {& L6 ]' g12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  ' m$ X0 M" F8 I
process is in place.& ?& ^' \! K% \6 v

; g- W5 C+ k/ o13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  ! w! l* [* w3 J2 @
of activities and recommendations.: l# i+ z) i% @$ h

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  ( p$ V6 _0 ^1 _0 Q7 t( u! I
of campaigning.

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  * O) I- n* a3 p/ h/ l& ~% Z4 H2 Q- L, J
Administration Committee.

QUALIFICATIONS:6 c# t: m4 I' y* ]; b$ H

2 c3 H. i" v' ]# Z0 H7 ~1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
$ M8 U7 r$ k# s; K6 d6 M  [for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
$ _) i: G. u9 f2 A/ @- V8 }Union member.
" F0 J) B; A: U: b* A% u2 M  p) d7 A( m! P* }
2) Must have some experience in student elections.% i! `* @$ w# {, B7 J; Z2 n* r
+ d  c8 ]' L' v' p. k3 \4 |9 o
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  0 |2 T6 H2 N/ y' x
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  1 m1 u5 i/ O2 g( V  W# x
with the Students' Union.

5) Excellent project management skills are required.

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
