Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Conventional Transit Operator — for positions starting in Summer 2007. This is a long term posting with the successful applicants being called to fill positions on an ‘as-required’ basis.

FUNCTIONS:
•        Transport passengers to and from destinations on prescribed scheduled routes.
•        Collect proper fare, issue transfers.
•        Respond to customer queries concerning transit information.
•        Operate a Transit diesel bus and/or trolley coach, on a day, night or split shift under varying weather

•        Adhere to schedules.
•        Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations.
•        Ensure the safety of all passengers.
•        Handle diverse and challenging situations.
•        Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
•        Provide excellent customer service.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
+ c" [# R% q( H+ }. D6 H•        Grade eleven (11) or an equivalent educational level is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset.
: }; s* a& ~0 |4 q& }' S$ K1 t) X& c•        Proven ability to deal directly with the public, with well-developed customer service skills; the ability
' a# k% D7 s9 w; w# a( V/ n1 Y2 u% ]to be diplomatic and courteous in dealing with the public, from the first passenger to the last passenger

$ c7 d$ f: T8 p$ n6 q5 }. A•        Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate bus controls, re-set trolley poles, provide passengers with assistance i.e. strollers, wheelchairs etc.).
•        Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) and must have held a valid operator's license for (3) consecutive years.
•        Selected applicants must pass the Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's class 2 written test, at their own expense, prior to training.
•        Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the video test date)
showing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period.
0 G6 z1 e" y0 Y6 m+ `•        Ability to pass a written English comprehension test, a public relations video-test, a driving skill
' O4 x$ z0 V6 {6 Q2 B- ~video-test, a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, a pre-employment City medical examination and a Police Security clearance (at their own expense, prior to training).
•        Successful completion of the ETS Training Program.
% B( k$ Q' s( |* b•        Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training.

9 D- G  }' t6 f& }$ f2 RVarious hours of shift work (straight or split shift), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week
1st year:  Guaranteed minimum 67.4 hours bi-weekly
, N9 E* U+ S  r& @7 n1 _# SThereafter:  Guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly

Training Rate:  $16.56 Hourly
Post Training Rate:  $20.36 - $25.45 Hourly
